I stopped at Roti Stop which is conveniently next door to Stoke Newington Station and the bus stop, ordering lamb curry and roti with a side of plantain stick. The curry was really fresh and home cooked and there was a great selection of other food choices to suit every pocket ! Service was delivered with a smile(customer service people) I may have to take a detour just so I can sample all the other tantalizing things on offer — doubles, patties, salt fish fritters, chicken roti, rice and peas… yum. I had a sorrel beer which was also really refreshing and a new one on me ! I WILL be back.

My Uncle Clifford is a very funny man, but notoriously cheap. As children he’d promise me and my cousin a fancy lunch and then drive us over to the local store and guide us to the hot-glass oven telling us to «pick a patty, chile. Any wan ya want. All on me maan. All on me». I loved those lunches. I wanted them all. Chicken. Lamb. Beef. The delicately spiced meat, all juicy and salty. The yellow, flaky pastry oozing optimum amounts oil. Such are the deliberations of two chubby, Caribbean children circa 1989. So imagine my joy and nostalgia when stumbling across The Roti Stop, a small, hut-like restaurant devoted to Caribbean delicacies(Trinidadian if you must be specific) whilst on a sojourn to Morrisons. It doesn’t look much: this isn’t a spot for atmosphere, nor for East London hipster spotting, nor for long, lazy lunches, infact. This is for GRUB. Hearty. Rich. Sordid. Grub. Make sure you try the Channa filled roti(doubles), phulouri, jerk chicken, curry chicken and saltfish and then wash it down with ginger beer or sorrel or two. Pucca.

So good. You should show up early or phone in if you want to get first pick. I wanted to try the ackee and saltfish roti, but it was sold out by the time I arrived. I settled on a pumpkin and lamb roti instead… and I was not disappointed. Bursting with flavor and spice, it truly was a treat. I also got a fried plantain which is the perfect accompaniment to the spicy roti. It is right off the Stoke Newington rail station so it’s easily accessible to all.

Roti stop is a small little takeaway Caribbean shop, which is few minutes from Stoke Newington train station. Inside of the shop is the fridge with drinks in it. They also have fliers(clubs, events etc) on the right side of the shop and a few posters on their windows for your knowledge. They have a counter the minute you get in and you see some of the food displayed, with the menu displayed on top. Food prices seem to range from £10 to £1. Well I ordered a plantain stick. For anyone who does not know what a plantain is, its a big green banana which later turns yellow. They sell plantain in ethnic food shops. Plantain stick is fried plantain pieces on a long cocktail stick. It only cost a £1 and was divine in taste and was ripe and moist with the right sweetness. Excellent! They will ask you if you want it heated up, say yes! it good as a cold snack as well, but divine when warm. Well when I’m in stokie again Roti stop will defiantly be a stop for me.

this is a traditional roti place… you feel like you are in the Carribean after you eat a roti from this little haven in Stoke Newington! Try the beef or chicken roti! Amazing!!!
