Rock & Sole Plaice

Sur les conseils d’un proche Unilocaleur, nous voici en train de tester le «meilleur» fish & chips de Londres.
La salle est plutôt sympa, très kitsch avec carrelage au mur et décoration marine.
Arrivés en pleine après-​midi, nous n’avons eu aucune difficulté à trouver une place malgré l’exiguïté de la pièce.
Beaucoup prennent à emporter mais quand on est touriste, difficile de trouver une place assise dans les alentours après une bonne balade.
Nous optons pour un plat de Haddock et de morue. Le service est plutôt rapide.
Les poissons sont vraiment bons, parfaitement cuits avec leur panure étonnamment pas si grasse (enfin… Sûrement pas en terme de calories…). La sauce vinaigre est parfaite avec.
Gros bémol par contre sur les frites… Coupées trop grossièrement, on s’étoufferait presque avec.
Sans de point de comparaison, j’ai du mal à mettre plus de 3 étoiles Unilocal pour ce genre d’endroit, surtout que ce n’est pas donné du tout (£31 à deux avec soda)
A tester donc, si comme moi, vous n’aviez jamais mangé de F&C: c’est pas fou à posteriori mais j’aurais regretté de passer à côté.

Recommended to us for fish and chips so we gave it a shot. Seemed like a typical fast food/​fried food place. I had chicken and chips, my sister had fish and chips. It was pricy but the portions were big so we left full. Ok service. Our food came out later than people who had walked in after and ordered after us.

First fish and chips in Great Britain. I was hungry and ordered a large cod and when she brought it out… Wow it was a huge order. Barely finished the fish and left a few chips.
Way better than we have in the states and the oil was fresh and the cod wonderful. Cooked fresh, not sitting out under a lamp! Talk about bust my belt, plus the young lady serving us was wonderful!
Bottom line would I come back… hell yes! Grin

Best fish and chips that I’ve had in London! The cod was cooked fresh to a nice outer crisp and served with fresh cut chips. Doused in vinegar and you can’t get any better.
We waited a few minutes for a table with the line out the door but certainly understandable as this place is popular lunch spot. Service was quick and waiter recommend starting with the calamari and prawns which were quite nice.

Aïe, aïe, aïe. Après avoir lu et relu des bonnes choses et placé tous mes espoirs sur ce Fish & Chips pour faire découvrir ce plat à mon chéri, quel déception !
En arrivant, le lieu est quasiment vide, la salle très simplement équipé né donne pas envie de s’y attabler. On hésite. C’est quand même le meilleur Fish & Chips de Londres, enfin ce qu’on en avait lu. Il y a pas mal de gens qui prennent à emporter. C’est pas très clair. Il y a des prix affichés au mur. On s’apprête à commander et à s’installer. Mais la carte n’est pas la même, ni les prix si on mange sur place. Là où les prix sont justement convenables à emporter, ils paraissent exorbitant à table. Et en plus, les tables sont sales…
La serveuse qui aurait préféré être n’importe où plutôt qu’à nous servir n’est pas très patiente et nous finissons par commander à la hâte sans être trop sûre de ce que nous prenons.
Nous nous retrouvons avec 2 portions énormes. 1 seule aurait été très largement suffisante pour 2 voir 3 ! Le poisson est très bon, bien pané sans être trop gras mais les frites né sont vraiment pas bonnes.
L’addition vient couronné le tout avec une note très salée de 46£. Oui, aïe, aïe, aïe !

The place is at the corner of be street, easy to find! The fish & chips were alright, a little dry. Overall still a good place to try. Love the sauce!

Not good. We risked our health to try fried fish but alas, not as attempting as expected, fish is dry. Not satisfied!

This restaurant has history for its fish n chips! It been around for over 100 years.
We sat downstairs, ordered the large cod and large haddock. They have regular for £15 and large for £18. Made to order and still piping hot when it’s brought out and served to you.
Service is prompt, no frills. Pay at the till on the way out. Good location near covent garden.
Will be back if craving fish and chips!

I very much enjoyed the fish and chips here. It’s not cheap but the service was quick and friendly and the food was good. We shared one plate of fish and chips because the portions are huge. Their fish is apparently locally sourced and sustainable, so you can feel a little better about eating here.
It’s worth nothing that if you choose to eat in the restaurant versus takeaway, you’ll pay more for your meal. I for one welcome the chance to sit down after a long day of sightseeing and it’s worth the extra money, but if you are on a budget please beware.
You can choose the type of fish that you want, from cod to haddock to sole. The menu is obviously fish-​heavy but they do have chicken nuggets for kids. Speaking of kids, if you have any in tow they will want to check out the menu (and inevitably laugh at the «spotted dick» on offer).
I like that there’s outdoor dining year round (we were wearing our winter coats and munching on crispy fried fish and chips al fresco). Throw in a couple of good beers and you’ve got yourself a nice evening in London.

Had a large haddock with chips, take away, at £11.5, which is £5 cheaper thanks to Unilocal reviews stating so. The fish was absolutely delicious. It remained crispy despite the 15 minutes journey back and was seasoned only with salt and vinegar. Chips were more like wedges than skinny fries and were filled with potato. Overall, awesome flavour and since we got the larger sized one, it was enough to share between 2 persons. It’s a must try!

The Fish and Chips were actually quite perfect. The fish was super crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.
It is going to cost you about 30 $ a person so I wouldn’t suggest eating here if you are on a budget. Also, it is important to know that there are restaurants that serve Fish and Chips on every corner so don’t settle if you aren’t happy with the price, environment or the long lines.
I didn’t eat the mushy peas because I am not a fan of peas to begin with so I don’t know how that tasted.

I have gotten take away here a couple of times and I love that there is never any wait time. They literally just give you your food right when you order it. I get the cod and it is delicious and perfectly fried. However, the chips are just okay and sometimes you get a few stale ones. Make sure you ask for salt, vinegar, and tartar sauce (& sometimes they charge you for tartar sauce).
It is a little over-​priced but the portions are very large so you won’t be hungry after a meal here. There are better places to eat in London but if you are looking for traditional fish & chips or a quick and simple meal, this is the place to come!

Came here on a Sunday evening after the British Museum is closed. The place is not full and we shared an outdoor bench with another person. Ordering food was quick and easy. We ordered one with cod and one with haddock. Strangely, the food took a while to come but the fish was fresh, huge, piping hot and the chips were excellent. We are definitely not fish & chips expert but we definitely enjoy the local British flavor.

I came to the Rock and Sole Place after reading the reviews in here, ordered the haddock fish and chips. I must say that the portions are huge, although I was very hungry, the meal was indeed filling. The food was excellent, the chips were home style fat fries which i would rate as 8 out of 10.
The staff was nice and service was relatively quick. I am very pleased with the overall experience and would indeed recommend this place to friends.

Got a nice little table outside on a sunny day, delicious fish and chips and a good local vibe… only thing I would say is eating outside isn’t ideal given the busy street its on, but overall the food was good and the service was quick which was just what we needed for a quick lunch time meal.

Had fish and chips and a beer here for dinner. My wife and I split a large order or cod fish and chips. It was plenty of food for two people. The batter on the fish was super crunchy, but the fish was a little soggy and kept falling apart. It was hard to get a bit to your mouth without some of it falling off your fork. The chips were good, but could have been crispier. The seating was comfortable and the service was great. Overall a nice place to grab a meal.

The food was good, but nothing to write home about. There are too many great places in London to waste your time and money here. I wish that I would have known take away was £5 cheaper before I sat down and ordered. I didn’t even have my own table. My wife and I had to share a table with another couple.
Also the service wasn’t that great. The servers mumbled, were short, and somewhat cold. They seemed annoyed with our being there. A smile or a thank you would have been nice. It felt odd because in contrast with the rest of Europe, Londoners are typically the warmest and most welcoming.
I advise you move along.

Love the Rock and Sole in Coventry Garden. Always make a point to come for fish and chips when passing through London. Great outdoor picnic seating but beware of the pigeons! Still worth it!

Assez décevant. Coupe grossière des frites et poisson assez fade (même si la panure était correcte).
Très copieux ! Pas besoin de prendre une portion Large, sauf si vous êtes un gros mangeur. Compte tenu des tarifs, préférez à emporter.

fantastique F&C avec personnel très «Customer orientés». Les portions sont énormes et nous avons pris à 2 adultes & 2 enfants 2 F&C «Large» et ils nous ont offert un 3ème poisson. Le décor vintage est aussi à voir. Addition de 47£ à nous 4.

Budget travelers, probably best to get your fish and chips elsewhere.
15 pounds to have your fish and chips there or 10 pounds for takeaway.
Of course, we opted for the takeaway since it was a pleasant day to eat outside.
Service was lacking. It was not very busy, so they could have been more attentive. Staff only asked if I wanted vinegar on the fish.
Thinking we had lemon and tartar sauce, we walked away. About two blocks later, my friend and I check our boxes to find that we weren’t given any of the usual accompaniments to fish and chips. She walked back to get them.
The fish was fried well and still moist, but it lacked seasoning. So disappointing.
Most of the chips were soggy and they also needed some more salt.
Sure we were take-​away customers paying less, but I think the staff should ensure that we enjoy our food as well.

This chippie is rather pricey for non-​fancy fare but it is in Convent Garden, so I suppose it’s to be expected.
I thought the fish (cod or haddock) and chips were nicely done — quite filling. Tartare sauce was also great. But I did NOT like the mushy peas! They were vile so I suggest skipping the mushy peas. I’m speaking as a non-​mushy peas lover.

The reason I’m giving a five star is relative to what I have expected from a traditional fish and chips place being told by my friends. The cod fish meat was spongy and chewy. Would like to try the chicken nugget the next time.

There’s seating inside (which is quite squashed), outside (with traffic) and further seating in the basement. Gets very busy being on the outskirt of Covent Garden, lots of tourists.
The cod and handful of chips, and a small portion of mushy peas was quite pricey, since the batter was quite thick to make the fish look like a large portion. However, the chips were proper fat chips, nice and hot and crunchy outside and soft inside, the saveloy was good too! And a really decent hot chocolate, not lukewarm and watery, can taste the chocolate!

Je suis allée a ce fish&chips car j’avais pu voir sur Unilocal qu’il était un des meilleurs! N’en ayant jamais mangé avant ça, je n’ai pas trop d’éléments de comparaison… Mais nous nous sommes régalés, pas trop gras, le poisson a l’air frais les frites aussi! Il faut prendre une portion normale, car elle est déjà assez énorme, personnellement je né l’ai pas finie alors que je mange plutôt bien.
Nous n’avons pas attendu car il n’y avais personne et avons pu manger en terrasse (15 min après c’était blindé!)
Ce qui a été plus difficile a digérer c’est l’addition: environ 16£ par personne, sans compter le service! Pour un fish&chips je trouve cela un peu abusé mais nous avons sûrement payé la qualité.
Allez y si vous voulez vous réconcilier avec ce plat!

THE legend in London. L’incontournable Fish ans Chips de Londres. Bien mieux qu’un Macdo ou autres. C’est un passage obligatoire lors d’un voyage dans la

Das 1875 gegründete Geschäft ist anscheinend immer stark nachgefragt, jedenfalls muß man sich auf lange Wartezeiten gefasst machen, wenn man hier sitzen möchte und sich nicht für take-​away entscheidet, was deutlich schneller geht. Wird ein Tisch frei, wird man british-​ordentlich einem Tisch zugewiesen; einfach so hinsetzen is nich!
Das Fish & Chips wird seinem Ruf dann mehr als gerecht — für 15 £ gibt’s die reguläre Portion der Standards: Cod, Haddock, etc. Jedenfalls alles mehr als lecker und die Portionen waren fast nicht schaffbar, ganz zu schweigen von einer etwaig großen Portion…
Einzig die Lication innen drin und die Hygiene ist aus meiner Sicht deutlich zu bemängeln! Der Gang in die Toiletten-​Katakomben haben einem schon etwas zu denken gegeben und erinnerten spontan an Louis de Funès’s «Brust oder Keule»: Die Toiletten? «Die sind bis zur Küche dem Geruch nach und dann wo die meisten Fliegen sind!» ;-/

Très bon poisson, sauce gravy fade, frites qui baignaient dans l’huile (et je cherche toujours le vinaigre avec lequel elles étaient sensées être assaisonnées). Accueil sympa mais qui semble las Un peu déçue en somme Je pensais que j’aillai manger the best fish & chips of my life but the Nordsee de Freiburg était vraiment au dessus!!!

Accueil agréable, poisson délicieux, deco kitch au sous sol, à essayer pour parfaire sa journée londonienne.

Un très bon Fish & Chips. Une ration normal suffira a une personne normale. La version Large est vraiment grosse. L’établissement est propre. La réputation n’est pas usurpée. Bön rapport Qualité /​Prix. Je recommande.

Ich fand sowohl Fisch als auch die Pommes gut, warm, halt wie man sie erwartet.
OK, ich bin wahrscheinlich leicht zufriedenzustellen, aber wenn’s schmeckt, dann schmeckt’s eben. Und wenn dann noch das Personal nett ist und die Preise passen, gibt’s volle Punkte von mir.

Fish and Chips à né pas manquer si vous allez à Londres.
Nous avions peur qu’il y ait trop de monde, mais nous n’avons pas attendu.
Nous avons profité de la salle en bas très bien décorée. Nous avons immortalisé la taille des frites qui sont énormes et le poisson délicieux.
N’attendez plus !

Nö, also obwohl in mehreren Reiseführern als «Must» beworben, war der Besuch dieser Imbiss-​Bude mehr als überflüssig. Extrem fettiger, trotzdem trockener Fisch, kalte Chips, ewige Wartezeiten.

Als besten Chippie in London würde ich den Laden nicht bezeichnen — wir haben in London besser Fish ‘n’ Chips gegessen. Aber der Umstand, dass es der älteste Chippie Londons ist, rechtfertigt wohl den Hype.
Fisch war okay, Pommes sehr sehr matschig (ideale Essiggrundlage), Service okay und schnell, aber der Preis war happig.

Du fish and chips, en veux-​tu, en voilà! Je suis allée à cette adresse car elle était recommandée dans le guide du Routard. Résultat: une cantine populaire, très fréquentée, où se côtoient les purs british people et les touristes. Les gens font toujours la queue pour avoir une table en plein air.
A l’intérieur, on se sert au rez-​de chaussée, un peu moins au sous-​sol (admirez le papier-​peint «marin»!). Je conseille donc de prendre à emporter: c’est plus rapide et moins cher (environ £7). Mais encore faut-​il trouver un endroit où s’asseoir: les bancs publics sont plus nombreux à Paris qu’à Londres!
Dans le menu aux pages grassouillettes: une dizaine de de poissons (morue, haddock, carrelet sole…) où on vous vante les qualités et saveurs de chaque espèce. Entre £9 et $ 12 le plat de fish and chips. Les suppléments comme le pain, la gravy (sauce), les mushy peas (purée de petits pois), comptez £1.5 en plus
Pour ceux qui passent leur tour, le resto propose des pies (sortes de tourtes) au poulet-​champignons, ou boeuf-​oignons. On en a même vu un commander… des saucisses frites (oui, enrobées de panelure!)
Après un service abominablement long (même les gens qui sont arrivés après nous ont été servis avant), arrivent enfin les assiettes. Le poisson est doré et croustillant à souhait. On n’hésite pas à l’assaisonner avec du vinaigre, du citron et de la sauce tartare. Yummy! Et le must: la purée de petit pois, à né pas louper. Une adresse à essayer donc.

Ich würde hir nicht sagen des es ein Imbiss ist sondern eher ein Restaurant.
Ja zugegeben wenn man den Laden betritt dann kommt schon imbiss look hoch aber tipp von mir: das Restaurant hat mehr Essensräume die wesentlich gemütlicher und ruhiger sind einfach da mal nachfragen.
Sonst der Fish und die Chips werden immer Frish zubereitet wie das eigentlich auch sein soll er schmeckt sehr gut und obendrein noch günstig.
In der Mittagszeit ist dort sehr viel los deshalb etwas zeit mitbringen. Für schnelle Mahlzeiten kann man sich das essen auch mitnehmen
