Around Primrose Hill I love the Regent’s Park road the most. It has this cute and picturesque small village feeling with nice shops and cafes. Every time I am very tempted to visit this lovely little bookstore. Nothing is more fun than it is finding new literal treasures and then taking those with you to some of the cafes or to the park close by. Primrose Hill Books has a surprisingly good and up to date selection, stocking a bit of every genre, and specialising in classics. Most of all it has a charming atmosphere that engourages to take your time and just browse around.

On Regent’s Park road amidst cafes and small quirky shops stands this book shop which stocks a range of books, stacked from floor to ceiling. They have hardbacks and paperbacks covering a range of bestsellers, travel guides and childrens’ books. According to a recent review I just read, they apparently also have a big selection of second hand books offsite, so of you’re interesting you should ask at the counter. Primrose Hill Books is quite nice to pop into after having had a walk up and down Primrose Hill(just a couple minutes walk away) and then if you decide to buy a book, take it into one of the nearby cafes and enjoy your surroundings. Set in the Primrose Hill area, where a great deal of artists, writers and intelligista live, you will find the works of locals sitting in the window shelves.

A postage stamp of a place crammed to the gills with an abundance of paperbacks and a few hardback tomes. This is not the sort of bookstore where you go looking for a particular title; it’s more where you go to browse and happen upon something interesting. They have a pretty good selection of fiction, especially classics and crime — and you’ll definitely find whatever the current top-sellers are, but the non-fiction titles are pretty limited. What really makes this place special, however, is their enthusiasm for local authors — more than a few shelves are dedicated solely to the works from Bloomsbury set. There is a relaxed easiness about Primrose Hill Books. Every time I wander in here I always end up staying far longer than I intended. Even though it’s tiny, you never feel rushed or like you’re imposing on anyone by leisurely leafing through endless volumes. The staff is courteous, but pretty hands-off — simply letting you peruse and take your time. If you do need help, however, they are extremely knowledgeable and friendly — will even order in a title for you. I just wish the selection of non-fiction weren’t so skimpy!

This is such a cute little book store it just makes you want to pick up a classic and start reading. Primrose Hill Books is a surviving independent book store, which reminds us that Borders is not the only option. There is something more inspiring reading a book from a small shop then from a massive store somehow the book is more special. You can attend readings by the author and get signed copies of their books people such as Diana Athill, P D James, Claire Tomalin, Doris Lessing, Nick Crane, Martin Amis, Jane Smiley, Simon Jenkins, Xandra Bingley, Ian McEwan, Marina Warner, Michael Frayn, and Tracy Chevalier, have been in attendance. The one thing that sets this store apart from Borders and does something I have never been able to get them to do is to locate out of print books. You can get new and used books from this small shop and if they don’t have it they will order it for you.

Oh how I love little book stores. I could spend hours perusing the shelves, picking up titles and dreaming about how many coffee-table books I will buy when I’m loaded. And the answer is lots. Primrose Hill Books has a great range of books, from fiction to health to kids to sci-fi, it’s got something for everyone. And is another reminder why independent retailers are SO much better than chains! Shop here! Your book will read so much better!
