Beautiful London eatery that’s off the beaten trail. Great place for a romantic evening! Only the fresh fish is on the menu — can’t go wrong

What an interesting place… Fish market by day, quaint little restaurant by night. The pace was eclectic and unique and the food was fresh and delicious! We started with an orange cocktail that tasted like orange crush with a kick! We tried one of each appetizer and one of each main and there was not one thing we dis liked. The wine list is scarce which would be my only criticism. A definite must try!

First of all, I love seafood. My family made it a point to eat fresh fish at least 2x a week for dinner(bah fresh fish is just cheaper in the US). As a result, I am an expert fish eater, and I can definitely taste the difference between a fish that was just killed, and a fish that has been dead for a few days. Quirky and original idea for a restaurant. Pescheria Mattiucci has chosen to avoid directly competing with the low-cost pizzerias or the high-end Italian bistros on Kensington Park Rd; rather, this restaurant has created its own little niche market — -Italian seafood in a casual, relaxed environment. Their menu is handwritten everyday as they serve only the catch-of-the-day. Décor: very quirky, very small space. The setting tricks me into thinking I’m sitting in a little seafood bar somewhere in southern Italy. Probably one of the only complaints I had was the«table» we were seated at — it was more like an ironing board than a table, and I kept having to scoot my chair in so that people could squeeze by. Service: very warm staff, very attentive. At some point towards the end of the evening, they were going around chatting to the customers left and taking little bets. The atmosphere was very casual and friendly. Although, it could be that my perception was slightly influenced by the amount of wine consumed… Food: I’d recommend the octopus and rosemary potatoes as a starter(if they serve it again). It was amazing! So simple, but really tasty. We ended up getting a sharing plate of grilled fish for the main because strong flavours just pollute one’s ability to taste fish. Grilled fish is priced by the kilo, so you can choose to have as much as you want. The tuna was slightly overcooked, but I tend to like my tuna a little raw in the middle. Price: Fresh seafood is especially pricey in Europe. Given that fact, I’d say that Pescheria Mattiucci is relatively good value. It is a bit cheaper than the Italian bistros nearby, and despite what one of the other reviewers wrote, both my boyfriend and I were stuffed by the end of the evening(from a starter, some wine, and 500 grams of fish). I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys fresh seafood, but do book beforehand as this tiny little shop fills up quickly in the evenings!

Well — I’ll give them one thing — a great business idea — to set up a fresh fish restaurant with a twist in Notting hill and take advantage of the organic bourgeois that get excited by places like this. BUT — from an overall point of view, it is plain ordinary. Fish is not bad, but I’ve had much better. Portions are extremely small and, this is what gets me most, the prices are exorbitant. We actually walked up to another restaurant for a second meal as we were still hungry. Tip: Avoid this place.

Update: Just added an extra star. Went in there to by some fish to cook at home and got an excellent cut of John Dory, and they even threw in the vegetables so I wouldn’t have to run over to Tesco. Incredible service, perfect food. So happy to have them around the corner! I absolutely love Pescheria Mattiucci! This new place open around the corner from me and at first glacé I though it was a new fish monger opening up on a very hot piece of real estate, but then walking by at night I saw people dining there! It’s a fish monger by day, seafood restaurant by night. It is run by a family from Napoli who import fresh fish from the family fishing boat. Each day there is fresh fish of the day that was just caught. The owner is super friendly and more than happy to tell you all about the day’s product and recommend the best wine to accompany it. They have a couple outposts in Italy and this is their first venture outside the country and it is a huge hit, especially with the neighbouring Italian competitors. At first I thought it was another place that would shut down 6 months later, but I have found myself back here time and again, each time saying«this is THE spot, the best local!». I recommend just putting your meal in the hands of the owner who will most definitely come by your table(there are only about 6 or 7 tables) and order what he suggests as it changes daily. There is always a veggie starter dish that is excellent! Highly recommended, usually consisting of 5 small tasters, and all very well though out. If you have a complex of not mixing fish and dairy(with the obvious exceptions) this place will change your mind. I feel so lucky to have this around the corner, in fact I am about to run out for some fresh fish to cook in tonight! Definitely swing by when you’re in the neighbourhood.
