There are not many central places where you have to call up and make a reservation, because there is no electronic system. And it is rare that you see orders being taken on the the old school waiters pad. It is a re-assuring thing at Mudmee, because it means that the concept has not been tainted by the cool and the now. Mudmee is a cute little Thai restaurant just off a lane by Bishopsgate. On Artillery Passage, you discover cute pubs, hairdressers and other surprises which are quaintly hidden away from the busy access area to Liverpool Street station and this is home to Mudmee. We were greeted by a confident tiny woman who was obviously in charge. She knew the flow of the room, timings on tables and availability. We settled on a corner table and were given the menus to study. We ordered a bottle of wine to share and due to our hunger, knew that we were in for a two courser. All the thai favourites are here and with the kitchen within our eyeline, we could see the Chefs busying themselves freshly creating each dish. To start, it was steamed dumplings of minced chicken, crab sticks, prawn, bamboo shoots, mushroom, water chestnut wrapped with a delicate wonton skin with taramind dipping sauce. We also ordered king prawns marinated in garlic and coriander root wrapped with rice pastry served with sweet chilli sauce. Whilst this particular prawn dish may sound like it has a soft shell(well I thought anyway), the wrapping is crunchy, so be aware. The dumplings in particular were gorgeous. I always struggle to find the right descriptive words without sounding pouncy or re-using the same all of the time, but to be honest, I prefer to use my own interpretation of how I felt and if it seems samey, then too bad. For Main course it was the obligatory pad Thai. Having been to Bangkok and Ko Samui, I know this as being a popular street food and casual dish at eateries. It is made up of stir fried rice stick noodles with king prawns, egg, beansprouts, dried shrimps, sping onions and ground peanuts. It has a sweetness to it which I like. Sometimes you can have it with a bit of a kick with chilli, but here it was quite mild. Eleanor, who introduced me to Mudmee, had the green Thai curry with chicken, another staple dish of Thai cuisine. Smothered over sticky rice, she was a happy camper. Mudmee is a welcome South Eastern Asian surprise in an area which just down the road, is heavily populated with Vietnamese restaurants. Furthermore, it is not a chain, it is independent, ran by a Thai team with non nonsense décor or service, just good food at an affordable price.

Pretty basic Thai restaurant — food was good with nice flavors, but not too spicy even if requested so that was a little annoying. Service was ok — we did wait about 20 minutes to have them take our dinner order, but that was ok since we were drinking a bottle of wine. There is an overall lack of décor and it’s essentially a hole in the wall sort of place, so don’t expect anything fancy. I would come back again if in the area but wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here again. There are too many other Thai places that are just as good in the city.

Amongst the various chain restaurants in the City is Mudmee, a small independent café/restaurant serving Thai & Malaysian dishes near Spitalsfield situated in a narrow passageway that forms part of the ‘Jack the Ripper tour.’ The service is efficient, food pretty decent with a good value express lunch menu making this a reliable lunchtime venue for city workers.

Literally hole-in-the-wall place at Artillery Passage. However, they serve solid, everyday Thai food. From the chef to the servers are all Thai, so you know the food is quite authentic. They offer Thai curries, stir-fries, soups and noodles here. If you have a specific Thai dish you like, but it is not on the menu, they are more than happy to cook it for you. For me, I often order pad see ew. Because the restaurant itself is so small, I think they do as much, if not more, take out business as they do eat in. Good place for a quick and cheap meal.

Oh man, another Thai place in London that got my hopes up. I know it’s partially my fault for walking right into the pad thai trap(PTT as it’s known), but honestly, you can’t hang a shingle as a Thai eats-slinger if you’re going to mess up your noodles. Other places in London overcook the carbs, Mudmee opts to undercook them. Not sure if al dente should be allowed in a pad thai rendition since this just means none of the sauce and squishy egg bits adhere. The veggie appetiser platter is pretty good value though, with a small zoo of fried veggies of all types to drown in the sticky orange sauce. We split fish cakes, and even though they’re among my favourite things to stick in my mouth, I honestly can’t recall even what shape they were. That’s a fail in my book. Cozy place though, and plenty of people were on lukewarm dates. I wonder how many couples have had babies and bonded over the mediocrity of the Thai food here over the years.

This unpretentious Thai restaurant offers an extensive Thai menu including Thai curries, stir fries, soups and starters such as satay chicken, spring rolls, fish cakes and scallops! The service was excellent and very friendly. We had a tasty meal for a price that was really reasonable for the area(approx £50 for two for two courses and a bottle of wine). Would definitely return!

Tucked down a little alley way, I went here after reading good reviews. I’d give the food 3⁄5 but the service barely makes 2⁄5. The waitress made us feel incredibly rushed through the whole meal. To start with, I ordered a bottle of wine. The waitress bought out a bottle of wine, but the wrong brand & it only ¾ full. She did eventually bring a full bottle of the correct wine, but it took a while. The entrée was quick to come out & very tasty. My issue was the haste in which the waitress removed plates. She started clearing before everyone had finished & even removed my plate while I still eating & had a satay stick in my hand. The reason for her haste was that the main course was already ready which she brought over straight away. An explanation of this might would have been helpful. The massaman & green curry were rather small but ok– not the best I’ve ever had. The sliced steak salad was very spicy & tasty, but a little dry. Despite still having food left, the waitress didn’t bother to check if we had finished before she cleared the table. I could understand if it was really busy, but there were still empty tables near us & no need for such a rush. We might have stayed for dessert or another drink, if we didn’t feel we were being rushed out as soon as possible. After paying, the waitress scrutinised the bills & coins, looked back, then scrutinised again, presumably checking what tip we’d left. The food overall was ok, but the rushed atmosphere wouldn’t make me go back.

i really wanted to give this place 4 stars but a few things let it down. Mudmee is very quaint little place located down a small passage in the spitalfields area. The service and ordering were a little sketchy but not that it bothered me too much. We ordered the Lamb Yang and the Malaysian chicken. The flavor and spices used in the lamb were excellent… but why did they have to give me overcooked lamb! Ahhh so close but the tough lamb made this dish slightly disappointing. The menu said the Malaysian chicken was very spicy, but it actually came off a touch bland given we were after something hot. Also whilst the coconut rice was good the plain rice was a little dry(pedantic i know) our final issue with this place,(don’t know if we got them on a busy night) was the cleanliness. Our table was a quite sticky and we noticed things on the floor that the staff appeared quite oblivious to… Overall the prices are excellent, but it didn’t overcome all their shortcomings. However i might be willing to try this once more if i’m in the area.

Great food and good value for money too. Enjoyed the atmosphere which was very relaxed, a pleasant change from the hubbub of other restaurants near by. Thoroughly enjoyed the simple but tasty Lamb Yang with Coconut Rice. I’ll definitely be going back.

Definitely a great find tucked away a short walk from Liverpool Street Station and Spitalfields Market. It looks like a tiny little place, but there is another floor of seating upstairs, so don’t be too disappointed if it looks crowded when you walk in. Thai fish cakes were perfect, spicy with the right consistency(not overly rubbery). The Chu Chee Salmon was lovely, the sauce tangy and the fish soft and cooked perfectly. My red vegetable curry dish was aromatic and delicious. Most importantly, the staff kept serving the Chang beers quickly as we devoured everything in front of us. Service is polite & quick, and overall the pricing provides value for money. If you are a visitor to the area, it’s worth staying away from the chain tourist trap restaurants in Spitalfields and finding this much more interesting eatery.

Food was not enjoyable. It was either too sweet or too salty. The service I received ruined my experience at Mudmee. I ordered my dish without peanuts and they brought it out minutes later with peanut. Brought it to the staff’s attention and they refused to take it back. I left as an unhappy and disappoint patron.

A hidden gem down a hidden street near spitalfields market expect fantastic food that won’t break the bank, that’s good quality, tasty and relatively quick! A good use(but not over use) of spice and approachable staff! The only downside is that this isn’t a particularly large restaurant, so can get quite busy(so not as quick). But it’s worth the wait for such tasty, fresh food!

I often pop here for lunch with friends or colleagues, and it’s always been perfectly fine. Good value for good food. However it does tend to get busy and is usually full by 12.30.

great value for money. really nice chilled out, pleasant atmosphere. Food is really good, and prices are really decent… with main dishes ranging from around 6.50−7.50 per person. Food is good, portions are just right.(a little on the large side, so no worries about going hungry!). The staff is also really attentive and friendly. Make sure you try some of the desserts too! altogether a great little hidden gem!

Good solid Thai food, some of it Westernised, some of it not. There’s also food from Vietnam on the menu and perhaps a touch of Chinese as well. I love the Pad Thai(Chicken) but I do wish they had some Pad Siyeu(I think that’s the way it is spelt!). My colleagues like Nasi Goreng and I very much like the Singapore style soups. Finally, I’d really recommend you try the Thai Iced Tea here, sweet and very refreshing. It’s busy, it’s not exactly plush inside and it is a little hard to find. Your reservation may also not survive if they are busy and you may wait a little before being seated. But overall, these can be forgiven, it is cheap enough and quick enough to be a lunch venue for work and it tastes damn well. Recommended!

A favourite — have eaten here four times and the food is consistently good. This visit I shared a platter of prawn toast, thai fish cakes, deep-fried noodles(very sweet), marinaded chicken wings, veg spring rolls — not realising that the noodle soups we ordered for the main course would be huge. Mudmee’s Singapore Laksa and Tom Kha noodle soups are themselves substantial enough to knock you out for an afternoon; vast bowls of noodles suspended in deliciously-spiced coconut soup. The Laksa is stronger, being curry based, the Tom Kha a delicate broth of lemongrass, chicken and kaffir-lime leaves. Service was only so-so on this occasion — we arrived at 2.30 and had the place to ourselves, so were surprised to wait 15 minutes for service(while the duty staff cleaned the bar). So that’s one of five stars knocked off. At around £25 for two people, great value, as always. (Annoyingly, my qype iPhone app crashed mid-post, so my spontaneous review was lost and I’m re-posting from my laptop.)

One of my favourite restaurants in the area. They have quite a broad menu, curries are tasty(try the gaeng kiew gai) and filling, plus you can ask for dishes to be made vegetarian, adding tofu or mixed vegetables. Tends to get quite busy Fri /Sat so better go there during the week if you can. Good thai flavour for money!

Great ribs, and located on one of the most picturesque(and of course Jack-the-Ripper-tour-clogged) Victorian alleyways in the area.
