1 word — homely. Ate here yesterday for the first time with a fellow italian. Proper grandmother style, tasty, home-cooked pasta sauce. The pasta really is exceptionally good, not fancy schmancy Cirpriani style italian where you pay £15+ for a small plate of ravioli or penne arrabbiata — it’s plentiful and utterly unpretentious. Décor/atmosphere wise it’s an honest to God, salt of the earth, family Greasy spoon, which in this world of microbreweries and hoity toity bistrots is lovely.

Proper old skool greasy spoon café. A real gem, don’t expect charm, this is the real deal!

I came here with a friend as we were looking for a place off the beaten track where his work-colleagues wouldn’t spot him, and because I used to go to school around the corner and had fond memories of their chips(and cute waiters.) Unfortunately the rest of the veggie choice is limited and my leek and potato soup definitely tasted out of a packet :( My friend’s jacket potato was huge and he seemed happy enough, so with the friendly service(though lack of cute current waiters) this is a solid 3… x

Sounds really good, but don’t do it too often! Just remember the old saying«a minute on the lips is a year on the hips!!» Glad you had fun, will give that one a try for sure

The Moorgate Buttery is a true gem, right in the middle of the bustling city. The first time I went in here was for a takeaway breakfast and(as I proudly boasted to my husband afterwards) I came away with a fried egg sandwich ‘the size of my face’, having parted with only one pound! The great value prices here are the immediate draw, but the quality of the food doesn’t suffer for it. Okay, it’s not Michelin star, but it’s way more important to me that their fried eggs are perfect(no raw white, yolk still runny), and their jacket potatoes truly are a meal to themselves — for your money you get a decent sized spud, generous topping and a bit of salad on the side. The only negative here is the popularity of the Buttery means it can be hard to get a seat at lunchtime. But hey, summer’s on the way, so grab a takeaway and hot-foot it over to Finsbury Circus to catch some rays while you eat.

I will not be going back to the Moorgate Buttery only because of the rudeness of the Blonde Waitress. I have had several instances where she seems to have a problem with what I am ordering and says that I cannot have it unless I order from the take away part and bring it down to the table myself. This has happened when ordering Soup and a Sandwich, getting eggs with my Sausage, chips and beans and not having Diet Coke when it is clearly in the fridge! Maybe she thinks what I order is too cheap but when added up it always comes to 6 or 7 pounds. Who ever heard such utter rubbish. The sad part is that I like the food there and the value for money and all the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, just a shame that one member of staff who has been rude too many times for my liking has made me not want to go back.

One of the best places in the area in which to get some lunch. There are always plenty of friendly staff on hand to help serve you and the choice of sandwiches they will make for you is extensive. There are also a number of hot meals on offer at quite reasonable pricesbut the cost is also my reason for deducting 1 point, is my own favouritethe humble jacketis the one thing that seems overpriced at 3.75 for one topping. I still get it, because it’s lovelybut still a pound or so less would be a fairer price based on other places in the area
