The starters we tried were very good. Among them were the buffalo chicken fillets and the smashed avocado.

Maze Grill Park Walk in Chelsea is a beautiful restaurant with outstanding service staff, cooking tasty steaks with excellent chips at a fair price. If you fancy, you can also find a brilliant English white wine, the Chapel Down Bacchus Reserve, on the menu. Maze Grill Park Walk, the newly opened Gordon Ramsay steak restaurant in Chelsea, is a beautiful place to enjoy some grilled meat. The interior is dominated by matching brown tones and the materials are carefully chosen to create a friendly atmosphere. The well-selected black and white photos on the exposed brick wall are a nice contrast. I liked that this place does not try to be cool, but uses certain design elements to create a classy style with a contemporary twist, far away from the standardised industrial-chic found everywhere these days. Even the music worked fine for me with a mix of instrumental and mainly indie-pop, as far as I recall — and when it comes to the background music, the less I remember, the better. The service throughout my meal was outstanding and all staff I talked to were very friendly and funny. After I placed my order, my waiter was quick to bring me some warm bread with a lovely, creamy butter quennelle — I think that’s the correct word for it — with a bit of salt sprinkled on top. For me, this was almost a perfect start. When I had been browsing through the wine list, an English Bacchus Reserve, Chapel Down 2013 from Kent caught my eye. I decided to give it a try as I had great English whites before. The wine was kind of fruity but at the same time very fresh and crispy, nicely cooling down the heat of my starter — and also great with my steak. After I had enjoyed the wine, I looked it up and learned that the Bacchus grape variety is a combination of Silvaner, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau. Interesting. The first proper course was buffalo chicken fillets with chilli and lime. The chicken pieces were coated in a hot marinade and crispy on the outside. The cool lime sauce was a perfect complement to balance the heat of the chicken. As main, I went for the 8oz rare breed fillet. I also ordered the peppercorn and house steak sauces, not so much for the fillet, more for the triple-cooked chips. The steak had a nice and strong flavour for a fillet, the kind of intensity I would usually expect in an onglet rather than a fillet. In contrast to other great fillets, it was not melt-in-the-mouth tender, but it had a lovely crust and tasted excellent. I think their salt block dry-ageing process and the flawless medium-rare grilling make this steak special. At first I thought it was a bit over, but soon discovered that indeed, it was not, when cutting through the red and juicy meat. The peppercorn sauce was good, but once again I was disappointed to find no actual peppercorns in it. It seems that’s unfortunately a current trend among many restaurants and gastropubs. The house steak sauce was like an improved smokey, spicy ketchup that went nicely together with the chips. The chips were really crispy, and the larger ones still smooth and fluffy inside. Hands down, one of the best portions of chips I had recently. For dessert I had their interpretation of Eaton mess. It actually looked like a real mess, but the mix of sliced strawberries, brown sugar and herbs made a light and refreshing pudding. The brown sugar added the needed texture to make it an ejoyable dish. An interesting interpretation of a British classic. At the end, I had to acknowledge that the 6oz fillet would have been enough for me this evening. To get ready for my walk home across Hyde Park, I ordered an espresso. A few spoons full of sugar made it drinkable, but once again it was the standard, bitter restaurant fare coffee. Nothing I would recommend unless you just need a coffee to get going. All in all, I think that with Maze Grill Park Walk, the area gets another top-class steak restaurant that is definitely worth a visit.
