This is one of my alll-time favourite places in London, a real hidden gem. I always take the wrong turning before recognising Hartland Road and generally cycle straight past the entrance to this secret stained glass paradise. I, too had been warned that the owner can be a bit gruff. Perhaps compare Lead & Light with your local timber yard rather than John Lewis, this is a specialist warehouse after all. Or make sure to visit on a sunny day — all smiles today and loads of friendly banter.

I’ve been into Lead and Light on two occasions. I believe in second chances. But not in third. No doubt they are very skilled craftspeople when it comes to stained glass, but when it comes to customer service, they are appalling. The owner is notoriously rude. Other glass artists warned me of this before I ever went near the shop. Unfortunately, it seems he has trained his staff to behave in exactly the same way; rude, aggressive, and downright insulting. If you’re not a stained glass specialist, they treat you like an idiot. Ask about any fusing or any other glass techniques in which they don’t specialise and they near enough spit on you for daring to sully their hallowed stained glass hall with mention of such filth. Twice is enough. I’d be a fool to try them a third time. From now on I’ll be going to Pearsons and ordering online from Warm Glass.
