Another fine South End Green lunch spot. Less traditional and more modern than the Hampstead Tea Room. . The atmosphere is one of «upper middle class — good for you — wholesome — everyday gourmet». Common table«hale girlfriend well met» ambience. Fine baked goods. Fine coffee. Great salads. Fine breakfasts. Room to sit and room to move. A fine place to share your life with your luncheon companion while eating light and well.

Too expensive for my taste. A teeny tiny tart with salad and a raspberry lemonade set me back more than seemed fair. They were not undelicious, particularly the lemonade but my resounding memory was one of ‘how much!?’

Great little spot on the corner between the Hampstead overland train station and the royal free hospital. French style café place with a large community table in the middle. It can be a tight fit so wear deodorant but you can usually get a spot right away. I’ve been there for breakfast and lunch. The menu on the board is always changing and is always tasty. They make amazing breads there. And sell spreads and jams and things for said breads. They even have them on the table for when you order something that you can spread over. My Breakfast Recommendation: Big bowl of coffee and some sour bread toast. Seriously they bring you these comically long pieces of toast, and about 5 pots of different spreads. Crunchy creamy heaven.

Take a trip to Le Pain if you wish to have a fantastic bowl of cappuccino. Combined with their lovely selection of fresh breads, cheeses, and cakes — Le Pain is an ideal spot for reading a newspaper and/or people watching. Although Le Pain is a chain, I really enjoy both this location and the one near my office at South Bank. The chain is very consistent with regular service and delicious food. I often go to Le Pain for an early lunch and catch their breakfast menu until 12:30. They have an amazing portobello mushroom and egg dish. I’d also recommend their smoked chicken and salmon tartines — along with their cappuccino and mint tea. If you live near Hampstead Heath, or regularly visit, they make fantastic hampers. How can you not enjoy an afternoon on the heath with olives, fresh charcuterie, bread, and wine?

Another fantastic Le Pain! As our local Le Pain this is my favourite place for good organic bread. The 5 grain rocks, as does the fruit bread. If you’re up for a treat try the Ginger bread which won’t kill you with sugar, or perhaps the chocolate brownie which just might! Unfortunately only a four star as the service quality can be a bit patchy, and it is a bit small(I love the bigger ones where you can sit and read for an hour or so nursing a tea and a tartine and not feel guilty about taking up space).

The smelliest brie in the world lives in Pain Quotidien. On numerous occasions I have strolled passed this location and dreamt of fountains of fromage. Wetting my palette with something foreign always gives me an ounce of joy. When a full smörgåsbord of fresh breads, cheeses and a garnish of grapes graced my table, I was filled with glee. The french stick was the perfect balance of crusty exterior and soft interior, the lemon tart was to die for and of course the cheeses were lovely. Never before have I come across a cheese I don’t like, but the smell of this brie runneth over(so much so I had to put the rubbish out prematurely-it’s a strong one.) Where better to enjoy the French cuisine than in Hampstead amongst the upper classes. I strongly recommend you should your petit dejeuner in Pain Quotidien next time.

Le Pain Quotidien makes a great effort to give patrons an upper class, posh, rustic feel. Their bakery/eatery gives off this warm vibe that alludes to wealth — well it is in Hampstead. I felt remarkably well-to-do in my stinking gym clothes, purchasing an amazingly tasty baguette with my cheese board and Lemon Tart. Chain or not the riff-raff keep clear and you can enjoy a little quiet time here with some soft easy listening music. The selection of breads is quite excellent and there are plenty of lovely cakes too. With the niceties said I must divulge on the slightly inflated prices. Le Pain Quotiiden is not cheap, but I presume we are buying our way into the pseudo wealthy environment.

On the site of the former Hamburger Union, this is another location of the famous Belgian chain. Terrific breakfasts and a nice communal table setting. They also sell take-away foods and cooking materials.
