India! Flavours as complex and intriguing as its politics. People. Lots of them! Dust. A lot of that too. Or khans, which reminds that there was Indian food, plastic furniture and decorating in the 1950s.

This place was a lot better several years ago. Either the quality has gone down OR my tastebuds have upped their snobbery game. Pretty disappointed in the food. Service was OK.

Ok, so I must confess I have been coming to Khans since before some Unilocalers were born! I used to live across the road from the damn place which made avoiding it almost impossible(I didn’t try). For those new to this place it is an institution. Just around the corner from Queensway it is packed almost all the time. It has a front section which is the nice end of the restaurant with restful palm trees and a nice faux sky painted on the ceiling(try and sit in here if you can). The interior section is darker. It tends to be where large groups(of which there are tons) tend to go. Try not to get sat near the serving hatch at the back where the dirty plates are shoved as the clattering of plates is a bit jarring. The other thing to note about Khans is that it isn’t at all about relaxed dining. Given the numbers it is get in get food and get out(think Wong Kei in the 1980s but nowhere near as bad). No lingering over polite conversation and a mango Kulfi. Sure, they have desert and the staff don’t rush you but it’s important to note if you want lots of time best to go elsewhere. But don’t(go elsewhere). Go to Khans. The food-oh the food. I have been eating Indian food for 30+ years and can find no restaurant that can cook food of this quality in such numbers and consistently year in year out. We don’t tend to have starters given that we aren’t interested in elongating the dining. If we do, then we’ll have a chicken tikka which is moist and not overly reddened by food colouring. It looks natural and tastes it. We always have the same mains-chicken tikka masala(really creamy and tender pieces of chicken-mildy spiced and perfectly balanced); chicken jalfrazi(this is not for amateurs-it’s basically a sauce which consists of minced green chillis-tart, acidic, deep, hot, spicy and hot(again). It’s not for the faint-hearted but I have had no dish anywhere like it. Try it-you won’t regret it(actually you might but only because of the heat). Final point –Khans is booze free. I’m not sure if this is because it is a Pakistani owned restaurant or because they had too many problems with drunks. I do recall almost getting into a fight with a drunk in there one night who insisted on talking very loudly about his recent dysentery-like symptoms, so maybe it was the latter. Anyway, they do Cobra alcohol free and the Redan Tavern on the corner of Westbourne Grove and Queensway is a fine first stop. Enjoy.

Be careful with the lunch-time pricing: £9.50 for the limited-choice all-you-can-eat buffet; or £4.50 for the 1-item special lunch menu. Their confusing signs can be tricky. Next time I’ll do the a-la-carte instead of the buffet, which was not as good as other’s: one of the chicken choices was cold — it’s burner was off until I told the waiter. Service is OK — except for the many dirty glasses. Tired décor — place has gone downhill a bit.

Old is gold, so true my friend dragged me to khans, very busy restaurant had to wait I suppose because there where no table empty after 9 minutes we were sited. My friend wanted alcohol, the restaurant is 100% halal !!! I don’t mind because I don’t drink. The chicken biryani is so tasty I loved it so much better than any other restaurants I must say my friend ordered butter chicken which made him forget alcohol, service was exceptional and there was a prayer facilities. over all it’s the best Indian restaurant going forever!!!

You know what! have them… have them all. Yes 5 stars! because… plenty of space inside, quick service, not fancy, not trying to be something it’s not, it’s a tad dark and fu! k me it’s dated from inside but the food is great… from the curry to biryani, to the lassi to the parathas. FYI no alcohol and you WILL stink for the rest of the day! I PROMISE! See pics :)

Been there thrice! Always have a lovely time. They’re quick and the food is always delicious and pipin’ hot. Gotta be careful to check how spicy your meal is going to be though! Because, I can stand heat but not a whole meal’s worth. The lassies are great but a bit heavy after a meal. You’ll be better off with a nice glass of fresh juice. I know I am! I’ve noticed that the food is always more than we can handle. I wouldn’t order a seperate dish of rice for each person, for example; three for four is more than enough. I’ve never tried any of the deserts there but I wasn’t tempted much, to be honest. Overall, this is a great place for friends and family alike. Larger groups will not feel out of place at all! This will always be a place I recommend to friends and family.

This was the best meal we had while in London! British pub food is just ok, so if you want a great meal go find an Indian restaurant! We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, which was super delicious especially with the Garlic Naan! We had an order of this ground lamb dish that came on a sizzling plate, that was also fantastic. We also ordered this amazing rice dish that has meat in it. It was beautifully spiced and absolutely delicious(I am craving it right now)! The Mango Lassi went perfectly with the meal. The servers are nice and the food comes out quickly.

I had the okra and the butter chicken. The okra was just a horrible mash(okra was not fresh and very bland) and the butter chicken was cold. The mango lassie was delicious. Unfortunately, I was very sick afterwards. No proof it was khans but timing matches(dinner vs 2am issues)

I will not waste my time and money going to this restaurant again. I went there today for dinner, hoping for a real Pakistani meal. But what a disappointed it was. I ordered mutton biryani, chicken masala and chicken korma. mutton biryani was OK. however ever chicken masala and korma tasted like crap. I will not go back to this restaurant.

Chetnie Nan with butter Tandoori chops Meat Currie Chicken beryani Butter chicken In the above that’s what we ordered, we have waited more than 15 minutes to receive the chetnie and nan butter. However the good was wonderful, all the spices elements in the food made it delicious. Order the butter chicken you would love it.

So the service was pretty ordinary here. I felt at times during the night the wait staff were trying to hurry us out of the store. The food however was delicious. I enjoyed the food itself and would probably go back there again.

Golden oldie. Food is served fast. But the food is not so fresh. Curries are clearly made with powders, not fresh peppers. Kinda mweh.

Delish! This would be my go-to choice for Indian food any day in London. Friendly service, delicious food, good prices. It’s not a high end place by any means, so if you’re looking for someplace with more ambiance, Khan’s isn’t the right stop. But if you’re craving some delicious Indian food, this is the place to go. The portions are also huge, so you’ll guaranteed have leftovers for lunch the next few days after visiting Khan’s. Bonus!

I heard a lot about this place, worked around the corner for 3 years and only went on my very last day in the job. Honestly, not all it was cracked up to be. The service was pretty crappy, generally barked at by the waiters and certainly gave off that Basil Fawlty feeling: that customers were getting in the way of them doing their job… The food was decent, nothing really to write home about but tasty and definitely plenty of it. Important note, this restaurant does not serve alcohol, so no beer with that spicey Dhal I’m afraid…

Khan’s of Bayswater a bit like that Star Trek film it’s named after — The Wrath Of Khan. It started out with good intentions, hoping to save the world with tasty food. Unfortunately somewhere along the way it became a genetically modified super evil villain that wanted nothing more than to destroy captain Kirk. The last few times I’ve been there it’s been getting worse and worse, and last time was the last straw. I don’t want to go there again. The food was rubbish and the bill was expensive. The service sucked and the cutlery was dirty. Once the producer of the best butter chicken in the universe, Khan’s is now running on impulse power compared to the warp speed of Tayyab’s, Mirch Masala and Raavi’s.

Excellent place just hidden round the corner at the end of Bayswater Street. Its a massive restaurant inside, with a weird sky-blue ceiling and palm trees painted on the wall, but the main attraction here is the food, which is also extremely good value for money. If you’re looking for a posh, high end Indian restaurant to entertain business clients, this is not for you. But if you’re looking for a filling, delicious cheap meal, then this is perfect. Khans is also halal, does not serve pork or beef at all, with all their meat either seafood, lamb, or chicken. They do have a wide variety of vegetarian dishes as well.

In many ways a London institution, it seems like everyone has heard and been to Khans. Not the prettiest place, and even a bit kitschy, but it serves all the fan favorite Indian dishes. Fancy a curry, this is the place to go for easy going fare. Great for groups.

Khan’s was always known as a cheap place for students on a budget to get a curry. My university digs were just down the road in Notting Hill Gate and I made a few trips here over the years. One amusing episode was when our group was told that it would be a long time for a table until the waiter spotted an expensive property magazine in my hand, which I had just picked up on the way out. Funnily, we were seated pretty quickly I returned here recently for old times sake. I noted the prices had risen but still not too high. I think my palate may have matured since ‘student with no money’ days but the flavours were only average. So overall, 3 stars for feeding me cheaply over the years!
