This is the best 2nd hand book shop in Greenwich. It really does have everything you could hope for. Stuff is easy to find and is very honestly priced. That means that you might not get the £2 bargains you get down the road, but you get a decent find at a good price. It’s crammed in here too. If you’ve just popped in on you’re way into Greenwich, you’ll be late to meet your friend. If you pop in on your way to catch your train, you’ll miss it. I’ve spent over two hours in here before. I didn’t think about how I would get 18(yes 18!) books back home. That was a bit silly. I’ve found books in here I’ve been looking for for years. The kind you lend to a friend and never get back. You can never justify buying them full price. I don’t come here much now. The fatc is, I’ve filled every book shelf in my house. I can’t buy any more. And I’ve promised myself I won’t come here again until I’ve read all of the books I haven’t started yet. I don’t think that promise will last very long. Smells great in here too. Old books smells are amazing.

First a caveat: I like a second hand book. The reason for this is that if I don’t get around to reading it, I can leave it on my book shelf and its worn appearance will make it look like I’ve given it a lot of attention(thus imbuing an undeserved but oft-exploited air of intellectualism). So this review may be slightly biased. Halcyon Books has been in Greenwich for many years, but has transformed itself over the last few months from a retailer of slightly over-priced second hand books in to a treasure trove of literary opportunities. Every book £1. But there is no organisation or categorisation(if you’re only going to pay £1 per book then you can’t complain). There are some gems in there; rare publications, old prints, classics that would set you back £30 in Waterstones. There are also a lot of duds and some highly involved, specialist pieces(like pamphlets about industrial coal output from the 1970s). So to get the most out of Halcyon, dedicate an hour to perusing the eclectic selection and be prepared to scour the shelves until something catches your eye(then take it to one of the nice Greenwich cafés and spend the afternoon reading it). They don’t just deal in high-brow stuff either: I will always be grateful to Halcyon for introducing me to Jack Higgins thrillers
