I had amazing veg food here just this past weekend, so unsure on the negative reviews. I had two starters: the kale dish with hazelnuts and the grilled artichokes, pecorino and mint salad. First of all, as starters they were HUGE. I mean, huge, could be main dish sized. Great flavour for them both, with the kale not too chewy and the toasted hazelnuts playing off it well. The pecorino and artichokes also tasted amazing together! Service was served with a smile.

As a place that historically I’ve avoided like the plague, I thought I’d have a look since it’s relaunch, I’m pleased that I did. The bar is well stocked on the beer’s, cider’s and spirits front with better than standard choices, the wine list looked equally well chosen(although I didn’t really pay it any real attention this visit). Their guest ale’s of Hophead, Mad Goose and Wizard are all good strong choices. What helped was that they update on Twitter which is something more pubs should do. The service was friendly and welcoming, making this a place I’d come back to.

Was looking forward to trying the recently opened Goldsmiths Arms in Penge because I’ve tried other Antic Pubs, eg Catford Constitutional, and had excellent food at very reasonable prices. Very disappointed. No one to greet us when we arrived, no indication that we needed to order our food at the bar, so we sat for 15 minutes waiting for a waiter to take our order. Shared starter of grilled sardines, bruschetta, basil salsa and roasted cherry tomatoes was very tasty but the toast was soggy and the whole dish barely lukewarm. Main course of burger and fries: meat was overcooked, dry and tough. Fries were the best thing we ate, piping hot and crisp. Decided to skip dessert because of the quality of the first two courses. Won’t be going back.
