Great pie and mash with traditional gravy. Also has some lagers in bottles if you’d like. The price can’t be beat too!

Pie, glorious pie! If you’re in need of a fix of perfectly crisp pie, get yourself down to Goddard’s now! Excellent food, low prices, friendly and fast service, this pie shop has it all! I bring all of my foreign guests here for a taste of traditional British pie and they all leave full and satisfied. If you’re familiar with traditional brown British gravy, I suggest trying their(non-alcoholic) herb-infused liquor sauce on your pie and mash. The mushy peas were not so mushy the last time I came but I’m glad I gave them another go as they were much better this time around. So happy I saved a little room for dessert as their rhubarb crumble with custard was out if this world!!! The next time I need a fix of pie, you know where to find me!

Best Pie & Mash in London. We actually cycled all the way from Angel for this! They have a great variety of pies which is not so common on traditional pie & mash, so nice for a change. I also really recommend their deserts. Generous portion and great quality!

It’s right on the edge of Greenwich Indoor Market, and I’ve walked past it a few times with their outdoor sign advertising«traditional pie, mash and jellied eels» and assumed it’d be tourist-ridden. Never assume. I ate at this place over the weekend. And let me tell you, they know good pie and mash(I can’t vouch for the jellied eels but my parents enjoyed them). I only moved back to the UK a year ago after living abroad for a few years and I was always craving good old British pies so this place was like heaven to me. So many flavours of pies, and it will definitely not break the bank either! We had the steak and ale, cheese, and chicken and ham pies with mash and mushy peas. The pastry on all of them was fantastic with great mash and great gravy. The mushy peas weren’t as mushy as I’d like… Too picky? Meh, maybe but will go without next time. I have to say I was also a little disappointed with the flavour of the chicken and ham; it was a bit bland but there were huge chunks of chicken in it. The flavour of the steak and ale was delicious. But my favourite? The classic cheese pie. There’s nothing better than drowning a cheese pie in gravy(I’m Northern, we LOVE gravy). I will 100% be coming back here to try out more flavours of this British classic.

Great place to grab a quick meal. The food was exactly what I expected. I got a beef + vegetable pie with mash and it was amazing. They also offered a vinegar based sauce that went really well with the mash potatoes. The service was very efficient and kind. All in all very satisfying meal.

We had chicken & mushroom pie & mash, double pie and double mash, pie, mash and eels. It was good, but not amazing. Mash should have been a bit creamer and the pies should have been kept in the over another 5 mins or so. All meals are served with liquor or gravy. We all opted out for liquor and we happy with our election. I had eel before but all at the sushi bars. This eel was cooked and reminded me of sardines. Can’t say that I liked or disliked it, I was indifferent. The owner was super friendly with great recommendations and explanations. You have to order at the counter. The menu is limited to pies and mash. For dessert we got apple crumble & black current with custard. Now that was amazing! Not too sweet or too sour, just a perfect bland of textures and flavors. Tip: share a dessert, it’s huge.

I remember visiting the old Goddards in Greenwich just around the corner before they moved out many times(was taken over by Gourmet Burger). It was a genuine local institution. Full of old-school characters from across SE London. The new Goddards is on the site of the old Cricketers pub, just inside Greenwich market. They’ve done well to retain some of the old features. The interior is pleasant and it’s worth heading upstairs once you’ve ordered and paid for your«double bubble» to see some of the old photos. Obviously it’s not fine dining, but it does what it says on the tin. Proper old fashioned pie n mash with lashing of green liquor over the top!

Pie and Mash is a British classic though I’m ashamed to say that before last week I hadn’t tried it. Goddard’s was the perfect place to start. The staff were upbeat and friendly, quick to serve and always with a smile. The shop itself is quite small with pew bench seating, though there is a larger seating area upstairs. The décor is classic; late Victorian tiles and vintage signs. The food is delicious for what it is — pie and mash isn’t exactly high dining. The delight is in its simplicity. I had the steak and ale with mash and gravy, though there are a large range of pies available(chicken and ham, classic minced beef etc), as well as a large variety of serving options — double pie, double mash etc. I sampled the liquor but decided against it — I think I need to ease myself into the pie and mash game slowly. If you’re still feeling peckish after your savoury pie Goddards have a variety of dessert pies — cherry pie, apple pie and that great British classic, crumble. All available with ice cream or, of course, custard. The shop also do a takeaway service, as well as a range of cold and hot drinks.

We walked around and finally decided to eat here. And that may have been the shitties decision we did that day. We ate some kind of steakpie which i usually love but this was so discuting that none of us could finish our meels.(party of 4) We sat uppstairs and i guees the cleaning personal had the day of, it was plates and leavings as all over and rhe table we cleaned our self was really sticky. The only positive thing i can say is that the personal was nice and friendly. But maybe they just had a bad day when we were there…

I would describe this place as a pocket of the North. In the south. It’s good food. Nice, if busy atmosphere, the staff are fu**ing awesome though. Seriously. They’re ace. Bloke cleaning tables is a hero. Woman who served me charmed me right off. Random guy waiting by the stairs for something put a smile on my face. Decent pie(didn’t change my life, but good) but generally I would go here if I fancy pie and mash. I won’t get much better. Definitely not for less than a fiver. If you’re in a big group you may have trouble.

Situated in the heart of lovely Greenwich, Goddards is an iconic english pie and mash shop, and the perfect place to grab a quick casual bite to eat. You have to queue and order at the counter, but the wait wasn’t long. I’d suggest popping in here before venturing off to see the many attractions the town of Greenwich has to offer. The prices are a bargain and we left feeling full and satisfied. If the prices were higher, I’d have to take away stars from my review as this definitely isn’t the best pie I’ve ever eaten. I tried the chicken and mushroom pie with double mash and mushy peas. The pie was tasty, but the mash and mushy peas were a bit bland and could definitely be improved. I ordered double mash because I thought that meant 2 scoops of mash, but it turned out to be 4 scoops! The gravy was also a bit bland and there’s a lot of it. I would recommend adding Coleman’s yellow english mustard to everything if you want to add more flavour to this value meal.

The beef pie was a little bland, but the chicken pie was great ! I quite liked the mash but you’ll want to add a little salt. Mushy peas were okay, a bit more mint please. Anyway a very pleasant experience and for under £5 a head, stunning value.

Deliciously simple pie and mash. Proper East London style pies served piping hot with mash and gravy or your choice of other sides and toppings. We just went there today after a stroll around the market and even though it was packed the line moved quickly and they serve you at the counter. It was great hearing the staff talk to locals and regulars. Very cool décor too, kept this place original. Recommend the steak and ale pie and mash with gravy! Mmmmmmm!!!

This place is a classic! Lovely historical pie and mash shop right at Greenwich market. Famous for their sweet pies and crumbles too, which are served piping hot with yummy custard. The whole ‘historic pie shop’ deal makes me think of Sweeney Todd. Well, minus the human pies. I hope.

We brought the kids in after visiting the Prime Meridian just down the way. Of course we ordered the pie, mash, and eels. We’re from California. So this was not our typical fare. We got the eels cold, and they we’re pretty good but lots of bones, we weren’t quite prepared. The mashed potatoes with gravy we’re just about as good as you can imagine! The pies we’re good, the kids particular liked the chicken. I thought the crust was a bit soggy, but the chicken was tender and flavorful. The kids liked sitting in the booth downstairs watching other people come in to order. I ordered a cider for the drink menu and it was a good choice, I’d recommend it over beer, for sure.

Your classic pie and mash shop. Looking for classic pie and mash in a classic English setting. Look no further. Located right next to Greenwich market, it’s exactly what you hope it would be. Order from the counter and get a cheap and delicious pie, with or without mash. Also, mushy peas if you like. Also jellied eels if you like. Also, a giant portion of gravy slathered all over it. Yes. The spot may seem small, with only a few tables on the first floor, but there’s plenty of seating above. Carefully carry your tray to the top and enjoy your meal. It’s fast, it’s tasty, it’s classically British.

Good«fast» traditional English food served in a traditional setting. The surrounding area is touristy and thus quite pricey and busy– so this spot felt like even more of a find. Reasonably priced, great tasting, good portions and great stodgy puds. There are booths to sit in small groups and a wait for these is not long as food is served and payment is done at the counter– so you can be in and out in no time at all. Very pleased with my hot and filling chocolate pud with plenty of custard, but I was still to scared to try the cold jellied eels! Traditional pie and mash with a few different filling options are available and even veggie version.

This place is so English and I love it. There was a line out the door and everything was served with a pile of mashed potato. We got our pies to go, which meant that the wonderful person behind the counter gave us a takeaway coffee cup full of gravy to go with them. A. Cup. Full. Of. Gravy. It was great gravy. The pies were delicious, and the serving sizes super generous. And the price is very right — we got 2 pies with mash and a sausage roll for less than 10 quid!

This is one fun British restaurant! Pies are the order of the day here — and their pies are absolutely first rate. However — the sleeper on the menu not to be missed are the eels. Ok — I’m biased. I kill for eels. If this is a Hitchcock thriller and a mysterious stranger needs me to do a dastardly deed — have him give me eels and I might be good for the business. That said — even with the soft spot in my heart for eels — these are very good eels indeed. (and I have been many places like some first rate eel restaurants in New York’s Chinatown — where — never mind the reputation — the eels were only ho-hum.) These eels really sing. They have a great fishy taste that stays with you in a nice way even after you have left the restaurant. The eels are served in «liquor» the special green sauce they put on pies and mash and peas and everything else. The combo is killer. One practical note. Here eels are a side dish — usually served along side pies and mash. (and in my humble American what-the-h-do-i-know manner … i honestly don’t see how eels go with a savory beef or kidney pie. Its like serving beef bourguinon with carp. — but its what they do.) since they serve it as a side dish — eel servings are small. If they are going to be your main(and I recommend this) — order a double or triple order. People at Goddards routinely order double or triple pies or double or triple mash — so no one will blink an eye at double or triple eel. Now what about the pies? Fantastic! The key feature of a pie is the crust. They do a suet crust that is knock your socks off addictive. They could a beef and building construction waste pie in that crust and you would eat it happily. The sauces are a deep beef gravy and the aforementioned«liquor». You can’t go wrong either way. I sadly was not able to do dessert but I stared longingly longingly at the lovely crumbles and pies all served with one of the most seductive custards I have ever seen. If looks are anything like taste those things would have been dessert paradise. But I DID do the pies and the eels and one thing is certain. This is a restaurant not to be missed. If you are in Greenwich for a limited time and you MUST pick between Goddard’s and the Observatory … Skip the Observatory. Easy call.
