Previous restaurants were the infamous Hainanese buffet in Golders Green… after this there was Dim Sum House. Dim Sum House had great food but awful service. I think it is relevant to know what was there before, as the venue, ambiance, area, customers and of course, the service. can have an effect on your experience there. Flames is a ‘Goan themed’ restaurant. The sign and décor is a confused mix of charity shop bargains, holiday destinations and beaches. There are tacky candles which are plastic, hazard-free and constantly battery operated luminous glows. There are plenty of main dishes, such as a grills like lamb, chicken, pork with rice and chips. There are some curries and the odd dish like fish and chips, but all at £4.99 — yes £4.99 ! Upon asking the manager about the place and if the £4.99 was a mere promotion, he said no, this is our final menu price. Oddly enough the Goan fish curry(more well known in this cuisine) was not £4.99 and priced at £10ish on a separate, more authentic menu… Confused much, and hoping to try Goan cuisine in Golders Green, I opted for pork grill and chips. The marinade was tasty, pork cooked well, chips… were chips, and service was very good. Ambience was great with the likes of Disclosure and Fleetwood Mac in background. Try out a dish, only £4.99 ;)
