I had the distinct misfortune to go for dinner at the Fire Stables on Saturday night. I had been here before for lunch and had a nice meal, so decided to come back for dinner. I ordered the pâté for starter, which came with two tiny pieces of bread. After two mouthfuls, I was finished and still had over half the pâté left so naturally requested some more bread. Ten minutes went by, twenty minutes went by, no sign of anything. I asked the hostess who promised to get me some bread. Thirty minutes went by. I asked a different waiter who had the audacity to ask me if I still wanted my bread at this stage. Forty minutes went by, the bread finally arrived — burnt. I was speechless. Luckily the hostess turned up a moment later to take the burnt bread away and provide different bread. The excuse for waiting for 40 minutes was that the kitchen was very busy. It’s bread, I doubt they had to make it! We then had decidedly mediocre mains and waited for our dessert menus, which failed to materialise. Basically they knew no tip was forthcoming so they totally ignored us. We even had to wait a further half an hour to actually get our bill and pay. It was atrocious service of the highest order. What would’ve made it better was if someone had come over, realised what a shocking experience we’d had an offered a bottle of wine, or to give us the starters for free, or something similar. As it was, we were left with distinct bad tastes in our mouths. This is the type of place that has clearly become complacent thanks to its location at the heart of Wimbledon Village. I would go to any of the other great restaurants in that area, steer clear of the Fire Stables. The other good revues for this place were clearly for lunch also, the dinner option should be approached with great care.

More a destination place instead of popping in for a quick drink. Wine expensive however the quality is high

Wandered into this lovely place while walking back into Wimbledon Village. I happen to be sitting near tennis celebrities, so I was extra confident in my selection of restaurants. the menu didn’t give me much selection for someone with allergies, but what I did get, I enjoyed tremendously. And the place was elegant and bright, while having an old world feel. Would definitely go back.

Great Wimbledon Village location and good food all let down by some pretty awful service. Not unfriendly at all, just seriously lacking attention. After a run of 3 bad experiences there I’m not sure we’ll be heading back there anytime soon.

It may be past it prime given that Time Out no longer enthuses about this previous award winner. That said, it’s a cut above most pubs in Wimbledon and the sunday roast is different class although service can be dopey.

Went here for lunch, nice quiet lunchtime atmosphere, friendly staff and good food. Certainly one of the better restaurants in the village.

Firestables is one of those rare places for us 35 plus that still feels trendy and up to date with a nice ambiance. They’ve got some great lamb burgers and although the food is never bad, the menu isn’t always very exciting. Very few options for vegetarians and the wine list isn’t much to shout hurray about unless you want to dig deep into your pockets. The friendliness of the staff varies — some are helpful while others don’t mind leaving you waiting for quite a while — not very attentive in other words.

This is quite a cosy restaurant and bar in the village. The nicest thing about it(as the name suggests) is the opens fire there. The food is quite expensive and the people who frequent the place are generally rather posh. It gets pretty busy, so go early if you want a table or chair if you are not eating.

So I was standing outside The Fire Stables with a friend of mine when this man who had already walked past, doubled back and came up to us, slightly sheepishly. I thought maybe he was going to ask if he could come in and eat fish and chips with us having been too embarrassed the first time to reveal his crushing need to eat plaice immediately in the company of girls in waterproof jackets. I was wrong however; it was nothing to do with that at all. He just said ‘Do you know this is Rafa’s favourite restaurant?’. The tennis player not the manger of Liverpool I assume. Probably not my favourite restaurant but I like this place, they have a different lunch menu each day which gives a fresh feel and main courses vary from £9 to £14. At the expensive end perhaps but it is nice and there is a really good selection of wine too. Plus there is live Jazz on the 1st Monday of every month and the prospect of eating next to a man that can crack open a lobster by aligning its eyes with his left bicep.
