Let’s be plain. A well-cooked portion of fish and chips is an absolute treat, and the best chip shops can inspire years of loyal custom. I paid a visit to the Family Fish Bar on the strength of the comments left here by Marble Girl. I travelled out of my way to find the place, eager to treat my children to crispy battered cod and freshly fried potatoes. Oh, how I wish I hadn’t bothered. To be fair, my first impressions were good. Everything seemed to be just as it should, and the antique cash register lends the place the atmosphere of an establishment that has been serving up quality fish and chips for years. How could this be the case? The three portions of cod and chips that I bought here were TERRIBLE! Not one of us that ate from the Family Fish Bar could finish our meal. Our appetites were reduced by the extremely poor quality of the food. Frustratingly, it wasn’t until we had returned home and opened up our takeaway that we discovered the crunch of several raw potatoes among our soggy chips. The far-from-fresh Cod was fried in what I will honestly describe as the WORST batter I have EVER had from a fish and chip shop. I find it hard to believe that anyone would enjoy chewing on mouthfuls of thick, spongy, wet batter wrapped around pieces of fish that taste rather unfortunately like they have spent longer underneath a heat lamp than they have ever spent in the ocean! Perhaps this sounds like your idea of a delicious take-away. Maybe you will find exactly what you are looking for at the Family Fish Bar, but not me. I for one will never, ever go there again. You have been warned.

I am a huge fan of fish chips and can barely walk past a chippy without my mouth salivating at the smell of freshly fried potatoes and crispy battered cod. The Family Fish Bar is the only chippy on the small stretch of road from All Saints Church to the Barclays Bank, and is known in the area for its friendly and efficient service, and of course its fat chips. Although the chips are not as crispy as you’d might expect(well I suppose if you’re going to put lashings of salt and vinegar on them like I do it probably doesn’t make much difference anyway), the option of three differently priced portion sizes(small, medium and large) ensures it can sufficiently cater for any sized hunger pangs. The takeaway also offers OAP discounts, and serve other items you’d expect such as fishcakes, sausage in batter and saveloy. Although the batter on the fish can be a bit too greasy for my liking it is still a decent choice for a cheap takeaway.
