I like the concept of the Early Learning Centre — the emphasis on educational toys, trained staff, and clear age ranges — perfect for someone like me who is basically clueless when it comes to buying things for very small children(ie under 4). The store is here is a bit on the small side, and the Early Learning Centre isn’t the cheapest when compared with the cavernous likes of Toys’R’Us, but then there’s not much choice in this area. The main plus are the staff — friendly and able to cope with the braying and pushy parents you can get in Chelsea. The main downer is said parents — and a few of their offspring. On my last but one visit I found myself being queue-jumped by Poppy(or some such), aged 2, who, in plummy, clipped tones managed to interrupt and speak over me to demand attention from the staff. Her parents were not, of course, going to interfere — they’d probably instilled in her that it was right to lord it over lesser mortals such as myself — but the female assistant replied with a very firm, ‘this gentleman was first, I will help you in just a moment’. Good on her — and I felt obliged to buy something after that!
