While the quality of meat is ‘good’, I don’t feel it is really worth the exorbitant price attached. I have been there for a pork joint for Sunday roast, and was told they didn’t have a single one which still had a bone. And once again for two *very* well aged sirloin steaks which came to £17.80 something! They weren’t big, just normal 15−20mm thickness. Tasted good, but not as awesome as the price would warrant.

Cleavers is also located on Battersea rise in SW11 and I was thrilled to hear that they source local, free range british meats. I went in earlier this week to find a modest selection of meats, but I found homemade spicy sausage and wild boar and apple sausage that I can’t wait to try. I went back the next day after they had made fresh lamb and beef mince and they also had chicken, pork chops, chorizo burgers, beautiful red steaks, and all sorts of good stuff. In addition to the raw meats they also offer ‘rainy day meals’ that are premade and packaged in a tin so that you just have to pull it out of the freezer and throw it in the oven on days you don’t feel like cooking. Cleavers also had a good selection of farm-raised vegetables, interesting wines, cheeses, and stacks of farm fresh eggs. It’s refreshing to see a local business focus on sustainable, free range and farm raised meat and produce — they’ve won my heart and my business as long as they’re here. Sorry, Tescos, Waitrose, and Whole Foods! Also can’t wait to try Scoffers which is owned by the same people as Cleavers — so really you can ‘try before you buy’ of their great meat selection.

Just popped in as I needed some bacon. Smallish shop, very helpful staff. Got some British smoked back bacon, tastes beautiful. Pity it’s a bit of a distance from my house, so cannot visit regularly.

This new butcher has popped up in Wandsworth Town just months before the entry of the Sainsbury’s Local on the Old York Road scene. Some people might say this means poor Cleavers is doomed to failure, but to them I say, ‘Bah!’ Because Cleavers is so much more than an organic specialist in all things meat; it’s a wonder of a local farm shop too! I admit I’ve never tried any of the cuts of animal on offer, but I’ve tried many a farm food. From the bread to the eggs to the ready-meals to the ice cream(Taywells) to the organic wine, everything has been top-notch. Pricey but worth it. If you like supporting local farmers and local businesses, and you live in the Wandsworth area, Cleavers is your place. And, handily, it’s open late for the after-work, pick-up-something-on-your-way-home crowd. As much as I love the new Sainsbury’s Local a couple doors down, Cleavers will be my go-to place for specialty foods(and, if I ever eat it, meat).
