Great for an afternoon happy hour. Drink selection that was discounted were great options. From the décor, you think you need to be dressed smart, but everyone in the place had on a different look. From divas to construction workers — everyone fits in at checkmate.

The food was okay. Service was horrible. The three mice running around also knocked off some stars. What drove this rating all the way down was that when it was conveyed to management, they unapologetically responded with«we will take care of it… tomorrow.» something tells me that«tomorrow» never arrives.

Crappy service. Went in there last night with a total of four people for drinks. We sat down at a table for about 10 minutes and was never acknowledged. Tracked down server and he came and cleared dirty glasses from the table and then never came back. When walking out the«one» bartender was on the phone and seemed clueless that money and potential regulars were walking out. I gave 2 stars because it could have just been an off night and looks like a cool place if they get their shite together.

Wonderful restaurant. We decided to come check out because I got my Tastecard in the mail and wanted to go somewhere for dinner after finally checking out the V&A Museum. Since the Irishman isn’t the most adventurous eater and I try to space out the times I push him to his limits, I chose a bar with Asian and«British» food. The Irishman ordered a cheeseburger and chips. The cheeseburger was fine, nothing special. The chips were delicious! I ordered the pad thai and loved it. It was one of the best I’ve ever had, for sure. And the presentation of the food was beautiful. I wish I had taken a picture but we were super hungry and dove in. As others have said, the décor is cool but I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to fake flowers… They are pretty good fake roses, in fairness; we had to touch them to doublecheck! Otherwise, it’s a gorgeous place. The servers were very nice and helpful but we wish they told us it was Happy Hour –we would have bought another round ;) One gave us a warning about the chilis that come with the pad thai, which was much appreciated. We were pleasantly surprised when we got the bill. The Irishman’s main was free because of my Tastecard and the drinks were crazy cheap(£1.90 for beer and £2.25 for a small wine). Overall, for a spiffier dining experience than we’re accustomed to: £17 plus tip! We really enjoyed it and I would like to return.

I really liked this place! The décor is freaking awesome. Comfy seating, classy environment, nice ambient music. The servers are attentive enough, but also know when to leave you to your own devices. I recommend the Viognier if you’re looking for a wine to choose, by the way :) Food is along the Thai persuasion, which is a-ok in my book. Oh, and the bathrooms(located in the hotel lobby) are awesome! Clean & modern — which in my experience, seems to be very uncommon in London.

The CheckMate Bar, Lounge and Restaurant is located on the ground floor at the Park International Hotel. It’s a very cute place, but the service was piss-poor. The waitress literally walked away after 2 of the 4 of us ordered our dinners. She was scattered and clearly absent minded. We sat at 9:30, and didn’t eat until 11. They stop serving food at 11:30. The food was very good, however!
