Café Saffron would be my go-to neighbourhood Indian takeaway, but frankly they’re too inconsistent to be. I’ve had excellent meals here and questionable meals here, and I can’t figure out why they seem to serve me a different lentil dish every time I order it/them. One time I had something excellent, and periodically I get my optimism/naivety back and try for it again. It has yet to come together for me. Having said this, the food is on the whole pretty good(but for being consistently inconsistent) and they have a very reasonable lunch buffet priced at £6.95 that is great for a sit-down lunch in Clerkenwell. So if you’re in the market for a quick lunch, I’d recommend it.

Nice little corner spot just down from Clerkenwell Green, a bit frayed around the edges. Everything you expect from a local Indian restaurant, so no major complaints really. But no major excitement either. The popadoms seemed a bit stale and the chutneys — while beautifully presented(my rather sad looking photo really doesn’t do them justice — sorry!) — weren’t quite full flavoured enough to make up for it. My friend’s lamb balti was gristly, my chicken dopiaza rather bland, the pilao rice a bit sticky. Still tasty enough for a mid-week fix and fairly priced. Close to 3 stars, but there weren’t any after dinner chocolates …

We really enjoyed this place. Tanoori chicken was really good, as were all of the veggie dishes we had. Nice service, comfortable and quiet inside.
