this place has been on my mind ever since i went there about two weeks ago. i think this is my first Unilocal review but i felt i had to as another thank you. the food was delicious and so authentic. ever since my trip to india, i have had no luck finding a restaurant whos food is really as delicious as i remember until i went here. the food took a little long but they had warned us about that when we ordered. however the place was packed and the staff were always around so maybe that is more telling of their popularity than their service. I noticed that some of the reviews are pretty bad, but they date from a few years ago, but be sure that this place is fantastic. although one review did mention the watered down free beer, which i noticed but kept to myself thinking it was just me. I will soon be back. also you should add more photos on this, i wasn’t sure if i got the right place, luckily i saved it on my phone. see you soon x

I have a fondness for Bengal Village. Brick Lane is a bit of a lottery when it comes to Indian restaurants, as many know, not helped in recent years by the incessant hawkers trying to pull you in to their restaurants with discount offers which personally I find very off putting and I think actually drives people away. This is part of the reason I have eaten at Bengal Village many times over the years since it’s always been good and have had disappointing food at some other places. When it opened, Bengal Village stood out for its more modern, clean design and Indian /Bangladeshi style menu that was very good. This was the time when the street went from a back street with hardcore Asian food cafes(basic, few seats, but good food) to a theme street lined with Indian restaurants and crowds. It’s good to see Bengal Village is still going strong. The reputation of Indian food on Brick Lane itself has taken a knocking over time due to some poor quality places and is quieter than it used to be. The area North of the Hanbury St junction is now fully hipsterised Shoreditch with no Indian restaurants. There are some familiar Indian dishes and a few specialties that are worth checking out. It’s a solid place to go for reliable biryanis and curries and a beer or two(love the jalfrezi) with good spicing that isn’t one dimensional. The staff are friendly and the food is good. This is my pick of Brick Lane curry restaurants(caveat: I haven’t tried many of the other places, just one or two that weren’t so good).

Excellent, très bon rapport qualité prix Dans un décor simple, ce petit restaurant offre une cuisine excellente pour un prix modéré. Le service est parfait également. Une bonne adresse à retenir.

Worst meal I’ve had in a really long time. The food was greasy and bland. The naan wasn’t warm. The rice had no flavor and seemed to have been microwaved in a bag. The curry was bland and oily. The«free» beer seemed to have been watered down. They gave us a «deal» for 14.95, but that meal wouldn’t have even been worth a fiver. All around — awful.

A very good Indian if there ever was one. Being a great lover of curry i was over the moon when told we will have a geography trip to brick lane! Upon arriving me and a few friends rushed to this restaurant as soon as it opened. The service was very good, though sparce at times. I have since forgotton what I ordered but as i remember it was it was very nice, though not memorable. The naans however were lacking in flavour and texture, as were the drinks; having recently discovered a loophole in the licencing act and me being slightly effeminate i ordered a glass of wine wich was horriably watered down. In all this is a very very good Indian restaurant that I would recomend, but, if you look hard enough you could do better

There is no way you could get me back in the door of this restaurant. As well as the misleading advertising, the staff who try and push you inside with offers they can’t then deliver, the food is totally awful! They try and sell you that the Evening Standard gave them five stars,(so does their website) but whatever has happened since then, their food is awful. If this isn’t MSG colouring, then it must be something even worse, because reds are bright(almost fresh blood red) while the vegetables look like they’ve had better days. Don’t be tempted guys.

I was so, so excited to get my curry on in one of the legendary Brick Lane curry houses — so excited, in fact, that I neglected to check Unilocal before choosing. Ouch! After being aggressively mauled by touts outside, the boy and I chose this spot because of the printed accolades lining their windows, hoping that the positive reviews would be true. They could not have been farther from the truth! We were served dish after dish of sweet, bland, stodgy mush. Being vegetarians, we look forward to Indian/Bengladeshi/Pakistani food as a welcome respite from meaty restaurants, and this was a huge disappointment. No rich, spicy, complex flavours at all — just gag-inducing Calvin and Hobbes style food. Is this what British curry is all about? The freakin’ Muttar Paneer was made with freakin’ coconut milk, people! Blech! The naan was puffy and thick, lacking a good chewy/crispy texture and even the raita was bland as hell. :(

I went there with several friends for dinner and I was quite disappointed. I ordered the King Prawns Jeera which, according to their own menu, was supposed to be served on a sizzling plate. The dish arrive without any sizzle, and the ‘prawns’ were actually medium size shrimps. I’ve been too quite a few Indian restaurants. Bengal Village is the only place that doesn’t serve Basmati rice. Instead, it serves cheaper Thai rice. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Thai rice but if when I expected to eat Indian food with Basmati rice, I couldn’t help but to feel disappointed. Despite the lower quality, Bengal Village’s prices were not cheaper than restaurants in the same area. All in all, there are better place to have Indian food on Brick Lane.

One of the best, if not THE best, Bengali restaurants on Brick Lane. Fairly priced, friendly staff, and modern interior. Delicious dishes from a broad menu with regional selections.

Quality and value make for a wonderful meal at this venue After trying out many other eateries around Brick Lane I always come back to this one. The service is good and friendly and the interior modern and clean. The restaurant is licensed and prices all beverages reasonably. House wine at 5.95 pounds is surprisingly good, the red is soft and well rounded. Bengali beers are sold by the bottle. The food is always fresh, hot and very tasty with good use of spices and herbs. There is a huge selection of dishes all of which appear consistently good and authentic. I have been visiting since its birth and it seems to be growing steadily more popular with groups and couples. With all the competition in the area this speaks volumes.

Living near Brick Lane, I have sampled more of the local curries than cholesterol level dares to think about. But I must say that Bengal Village is one of the finest. The food at this restaurant seems to be ceaselessly great and the décor is thankfully free of fake palm trees.
