Waterstones is situated on Bold Street, in the heart of the city centre. It looks quite small from the outside but the inside is massive. There are books of all types spread over 3 floors. The stock is well arranged and it is easy to find the correct section. The staff are über friendly and are extremely helpful. If a particular book is not in stock they are happy to order it for you at no extra cost. This is a great shop to browse around at your leisure, taking in the different titles and subjects. This is an excellent shop which has often been a godsend to me when looking for a present for a relative or friend, or indeed finding something for myself. There are often book signings advertised here. I have never been to one myself, and I was gutted to miss meeting the awesome Jeremy Kyle, king of the gypsies. It is not necessarily the cheapest book shop in the city centre, but it is definitely the best as far as the range of stock goes.

I always presumed this particular Waterstones would be shut down(or pulped) once its immense sister branch was opened in Liverpool One. Apparently not. Good for them. The Bold Street Waterstones is narrower and taller than the other giantess but manages to stock a better selection of fiction. This sounds daft considering it’s a branch but the number of times I’ve found a book here when in the other place my search led to gaps in shelves and shrugs from shop assistants is innumerable(oh okay, about seven). This branch feels more like a book shop– with more knowledgeable staff, a superior selection, a coffee shop that doesn’t just get in your way and book signings of a more awesome calibre. I met Michael Palin here once and can tell you right now my knees have yet to unbuckle themselves.

The Bold Street Waterstones provides a really personalised service given my experience there. I usually prefer to use online book services due to the price differences that they save for a student! This waterstones offers seem to keep on stocking the books I’m going in to pick up, noticeably more efficient than the Blackwells on the University of Liverpool campus. The particular difference that the Bold Street Waterstones has made is its personal element, I have rang the store several times for book reservations and been surprised to have my name recognised at the collection desk(without sounding geeky!) The less clinical feel of the Bold Street Waterstones makes it a better book shopping experience and I have been frequently surprised at the variety and depth of stock that they supply when needed!

Jim Thompson Chester Himes Iceberg Slim Walter Mosley George Pelecanos Vicki Hendricks Richard Price & Heidi W. Boehringer Staying on a pulp tip, I’ve bought some incredible crime noir from this Waterstones over the years. I’ve no idea if it’s just luck or if they have a particularly good crime buyer but there’s always something I want to read. There’s also some damn good fiction located on the ground floor with tables hilighting new publications and special offers. A quality bookshop in a lovely Georgian building with big windows, this Waterstones has three floors of books with special sections devoted to science fiction, horror, cookery, health, travel and languages. The staff are also friendly and do their best to promote local writers and events with a series of readings and one-off promotions. If they haven’t got the book you’re after in stock, they’ll happily order it for you too.
