The Strawberry Field Gate

So it’s not the original gates or what the song was initially talking about, but you gotta visit The Strawberry Field Gate while in Liverpool visiting Beatles sites! It was actually a children’s home that no longer stands (although there is a community house next door) but this gate has to come to symbolize the song for Beatles fan. The original gates were replaced in 2011 with replicas to prevent any future damage.
As a Beatles fan you must come and take a photo in front of the gate. If you bring something to write with, you can write lyrics, a message, draw a picture as all the other fans from around the world have done around the gate.
There is a little space so one car can pull over comfortable and snap away!
The song written by John Lennon inspired by the children’s home has one of my favorite Beatles lyrics ever: Living is easy with eyes closed — misunderstanding all you see.

L25 6EJ Beaconsfield Road sits the original gateway to Strawberry Field, originally a Victoria mansion, turned Salvation Army Children’s Home.
The Beatles song, Strawberry Fields Forever is inspired by John Lennon’s fond childhood memories; here he connected with the orphan children, also it is here he attended the annual garden fête.
The children’s home has since closed and the gate remains locked. The old brick that holds the bright red gate is dirty, weathered over the years and graffitied by fans with messages.

That’s right, it’s called Strawberry Field. Lennon added the ‘s’. Doesn’t it already sounded smaller than the psychedelic trance-​scape where ‘nothing is real’? In some way it is a pity that the place is no longer open, even as a wooded area, but a large, cynical part of me is glad it isn’t. If Liverpool City Council shifted a sizable portion of their attention onto making this place a tourist attraction, it would be mere seconds before any appeal of the song was drenched beneath a tsunami of banality.
Instead, the gates stand as twin nuggets of musical relevance in the heart of Woolton’s wooded seclusion. They don’t exactly dominate the landscape but why would you want them to? Walking past the locally-​maintained ironwork scrawled with affectionate graffiti and on through the area, you get a sense of what makes Strawberry Fields Forever such a brilliantly tranquil song. Drugs help too.

Now I have entered this sight as a separate category to the Strawberry Fields Community House as I thought that it would be unfair to tar any community work or public service — if it is still in operation? — with the 1 star, oh that and of course how crass it would be to review such an establishment!
However, Strawberry Fields is a momentous landmark in Liverpool and pop music folklore as it is the inspiration for one of John and Paul’s greatest songs. The song conjours kaleidescopic images of colours and places that have cemented themselves to 1960s iconography. This place is a wall.
I’m not kidding. It’s a rusty old gate holding up a graffitti stained wall in the suburbs of Liverpool. Thousands of people come by here every year though to see it. It therefore begs the question whether something should be done to make it worth the public’s time coming here and jazz it up slightly.
I’m sure Beatles purists would be horrified but seriously, it’s a crappy old wall near a care home.
