Meat was extremely tough, more like expect in a pub. I watched the lady next me saw the meat like I did so I don’t think it wasnt a fluke. Food was just average. This place was recommended but I wouldn’t give it a second chance.

Pre-booked dinner here on a Thursday evening and the place was a tad quiet for a ‘Thursday is the new Friday’. Needless to say we arrived and were seen to a nice table at the back of the bar with the rest of the diners. We ordered a bottle of prosecco before perusing the menu and deciding on our mains. I had the day off work and was in good sprits so the lack of atmosphere didn’t bother me too much. Saying that our waitress struggled to open our bottle so some of the regulars pitched in to get our bottle open… everyone seemed friendly enough. After some deliberation I went for the chicken that was served with lots of vegetables and potato’s in a creamy sauce. It was very tasty and you can tell all the ingredients were fresh and good quality. We opted for a couple of cocktails instead of a dessert and the bar staff were more than happy to put together a cocktail that wasn’t on the menu for my friend which was a nice touch. Overall it was a pleasant evening and the food was enjoyable. I imagine this is a better place to visit on cold nights rather than in the summer — as their log fire suggested!

I’ve never eaten here but it sure felt like I did, chewing on the gorgeous aroma of the place filled me like two Christmas dinners. Pubwise, the Monro, named after a sailing ship which in turn was named after the fifth US President James Monro(e), boasts a motley compendium of real ales and a strong knowledge of how they are distinguished and enjoyed. With its ferns and auburn trimmings, the pub is also very easy on the eyes and the only thing that visually ruined it was the fact I was there. The pub seemed to lack real warmth but once I try the food here, I can tell that star count will be inflating.

The Monro perfectly compliments its sister pub The James Monro situated on the opposite side of town as its dark, candlelit ambience makes it much more accessible as a quiet drink venue as well as a good choice for an evening meal. Being near Slater Street and Wood Street, The Monro is also a good starting place to go elsewhere for more drinks or dancing if you feel its possible for you to do that after sampling their delicious menu as I feel that The James Monro is a little out of the way for that kind of thing and best suited to lunches. As the gold plaque by the door boasts, this place has been consistently regarded as the best gastro pub in the city by many noteable organisations such as BBC, ITV, The Independent and The Guardian. Despite all of this the prices are not too bad and are certainly good value for their standard especially with a two course early doors offer.

Monroe has been open for over three years and they have been busy busy busy building a formidable reputation as one of the best gastro pubs in The region. Today they are very much established. I’m having a good old think and perhaps it really could be that Monro is Liverpool’s only true ‘gastro-pub’, As a result gastro pubbers come from all over the place to immerse themselves in all its gastro goodness. Whatever you order you can rest assured that the portions will be sizeable. What’s more you can consume with peace of mind knowing ful well that all the ingredients used to comp[ile your delicious offering were locally sourced ingredients. It is always good to see restaurants and gastro pubs supporting local food companies and suppliers. It builds browny points from locals as well as respect from visiting consumers. If only I was a big gastro pubber I would give it the 5* treatment. Still highly recommended though, ideal place to meet friends for lunch or dinner in the city centre.

The Monro is one of those places you can visit at pretty much any time, whether it’s during a hectic shopping trip for a bit of respite or heading there especially. And there’s every reason to as well, because it’s a darn good gastro-pub type place. It’s also very popular, so you might find yourself left out in the cold if you don’t time it right. There’s so much choice here, it’s overwhelming. Plus it’s fairly inexpensive so you can find yourself sampling a fair few dishes without breaking the bank. Don’t deny yourself starters — the goat’s cheese tartlet is an absolute winner. In fact all the food is gorgeous; the mains are your traditional pub meals done extremely well, and as for pudding, as soon as I see cheesecake on the menu, I fail. As soon as I realise that cheesecake incorporates Bailey’s, you might as well call me a taxi. I’ll want to go get a room with that bad boy. The service here is really charming too, welcoming and friendly and just the right level of attentive. There’s a ton of options for vegetarians which is great for meat avoiders like myself, and some of the specials, like the £8.85 two courses offer, are excellent value. Then again you might not really need those if you can grab yourself three courses and wine for less than £20 each. Not bad for a little treat really is it? It’s a great place to eat; the building is a beauty, the décor is fab and the log fire in the winter is just perfect. I can’t fault it to be honest. If you fancy something cosy and delicious this is the place for you. If you want plenty of choice and variety in terms of your food, The Monro might well be the place for you.

This is well known for being one of those ‘hidden gems’ for food. Obviously its not a hidden gem because everyone knows how good the food is here, but I’ve never seen a queue outside the door. Yet. The only reason this place isn’t getting 5 stars from me is because something is holding me back. I remember when I went there on a date the meal lasted for about 2 hours, but I can’t remember whether that’s because I was enjoying my date or the service was slow. The food was very good, although I didn’t have anything that was oh-my-god-fantastic. The décor is what put me off most I think. I had the feeling of being cramped, even though I wasn’t, and the lighting and general feel of the place was dull. Having said that, I’m looking for someone to take me back, and am especially interested in their pudding nights, where once a month you get to order 3(yes THREE) puddings after your main meal. If there was ever a reason to simultaneously starve yourself and go on a dating site, that must be it!!!
