After George and John, Ringo was the third Beatle to release solo work, back in 1970 when the group were doing the musical version of ‘getting on each other’s tits’. His album, Sentimental Journey, was mostly a collection of his family’s favourite songs and to reflect this, the cover sleeve featured a photograph of this pub. Go on, Google it if you don’t believe me. The Empress is a tall, old pub that stands almost opposite the street where Ringo was born. His mother Elsie worked here for a time. With such strong connections to the world’s most famous Dingle-born drummer, it comes as no surprise to find Fab Four bits and bobs tacked to the walls. However this is a pleasant pub in its own right, filled with odd regulars and dark leather booths, where you can squirrel yourself away and hum Octopus’ Garden.
