Two words: Chocolate milkshake We’re talking a large splash of fresh milk, generous scoops of ice-cream and a spoonful of good quality chocolate blended to perfection. Served in a stainless steel jug and straw, it’s heaven in a glass. The fab 50s music, big burgers, red leatherette seats and fun diner interior are just an added bonus!

I love love love 50’s diners. I put my swing dress on, made my hair pretty, and stepped inside. Immediately I was transported back in time. The décor was perfection, with its retro booths, chrome fittings and mini juke boxes at each booth. Our waitress came and took our drinks orders and later returned with my Oreo milkshake, which was simply divine. We placed our food orders shortly after and then the food was at our tables in no time. I ordered chicken in Jack Daniels sauce and it was simply awesome. It was so delicious and the portion was very generous. I enjoyed every last mouthful of it and despite being full I wanted more. My companion had a burger which was absolutely massive and he assured me that it was one of the best burgers he had ever tasted. I love this place and have been back many times. You will always leave satisfied and full.

I had such high hopes! Seated in the lovely 50s style diner I happily ordered a burger with ”all the gang,” aka coleslaw, chips, and onion rings. And I waited with bated breath whilst sipping on a ginormous coke(I got a straw, this made me very content as I hate ruining my lipstick). Twenty minutes passed. Other people’s burgers were dished out and carried off(the kitchen bit is open, so you can drool as the chefs make tasty meals). Yet nothing arrived at OUR table. Forty minutes. And I’m starting to wonder, where on earth is my burger? My friend and I were willing to wait for a little time, as darn, the food looked good. But we were STARVING at that point. A whole HOUR later. Still no food. After asking our waiter she said she’d go and check for us. There was no apology. The restaurant was not exactly bustling with burger revellers, either. She did not return. My friend exclaimed ”oh for goodness sake, even the chef has got his bloody burger before us!” So I ventured up to ask another waiter, who was ignoring us nicely. Sort of looking through our hungry, emaciated selves. He started rifling through a giant list of menu orders and deduced ours had been lost. We stayed because we were starving and our burger arrived within five minutes. The smarmy waiter told us we could have ”our drinks on the house.” What kind of settlement is that? I felt like throwing my burger at his face and I am not usually an angry person. Disgusted to say the least.

Since I’m in the wrong country, the wrong age and don’t even have any friends with the financial or mental capabilities of building a time-travelling DeLorean, I have no idea how authentic this diner is to the actual decade of the Cadillac-driving American teenager. However, according to all those films I’ve seen, the building is spot on. Just like a pirate ship or the archetypal Wild West saloon, the 50s diner of Hollywood celluloid is an environment whose very name will instantly evoke a thousand tiny details in your mind, pretty much all of them are present and correct here. There’s the red leather booths, the black-and-white checked tiled floor and the tableside jukeboxes blasting out twangy rock and roll. All that’s missing are two teens drinking soda from the same glass and dollar signs on all the menus, although that last one would just be confusing. The food is indeed delicious, the vanilla milkshakes chest-tighteningly so, but the prices are just a smidgen too steep for what you get and for that, it doesn’t achieve the stratospheric wonder of five stars from me. But that means nothing because this is a brilliantly unique eatery with a great atmosphere that you can absorb whilst pretending you’re in a film… so long as it isn’t Grease.

Anywhere that sells Oreo milkshakes is a winner in my book– creamy chocolatey biscuity goodness in a huge metallic container that makes me feel like a kid. Add the cliched American 50s décor– bright red booths, car fenders and vinyls mounted on the walls, some pepperjack fries(American cheese– I have no idea what you are made of, but oh how tasty you are!) and a heartstopping burger«with relish» as Rizzo would say. Ahh, where is Danny Zucko when you need him? Well, if this was the 50s and Grease was real, I’m sure this would be his local hang out. Hold the Pink Ladies jacket but I’d certainly be skating in and out of this place more frequently if it wasn’t so pricey, but it’s a cool atmosphere and definitely worth going in for a ‘shake n’ fries!

Formally going by the name«Eddie Rocket’s» this diner is tasty but very, very expensive for what it is. Fancy a cheeseburger, fries and a coke — that’ll set you back almost £8. Fancy going really 50’s and getting a shake instead of the coke you’re talking about £10. These are the sort of prices you might expect to pay in Gourmet Burger Kitchen but there your burger would be so thick, so delicious and so stuffed with toppings that you would feel it worth your while. Here the burgers are a little thin, the salad is a little wilted — it’s just not a comparable meal for the same price. The breakfast options grind my gears a little too. If this is supposed to be an American diner style restaurant where is the bacon, pancakes and maple syrup? Instead you get a «trucker’s breakfast» which is basically the same sort of all day full English you could get at any one of the numerous cafes or chain pubs that are dotted around the area. Last time I was in there they played David Bowie and Queen«Under Pressure» too, which is about as un-fifties as you could manage.

I love this place and I’m sure Quentin Tarantino would very much approve of this 1950s style American diner. It’s not just the brilliantly authentic décor and the great selection of 50s tracks that blare onto Bold St but the food is great. I had a Vanilla Malt Shake, served in an ice cold metal container and it was tasty. Very tasty. But there is also a good choice of burgers which are big, fat, greasey chunks of meat just as they should be and at a really good price of under £8 — a lot of places in the city centre are less value for money than here. I have heard only one suggestion for this place — rollerskating waitresses.

OMGOMGOMG I love 50s diners. Why the frick are there so few of them in this country? Styled on Johnny Rocket’s in the good old U S of A, this has the red plastic chairs, the black and white linoleum, the burgers and chilli nachos and fries of my DREAMS. It’s lovely. And I don’t care if some of it might not taste of much, because the surroundings are fabulous. But the food’s good too. Nachos are generous and plentiful with tons of chilli, blue cheese mayo and grated cheese. The burgers have names like Cheez Please. There are mini options for the tiddlers and milkshakes and sodas and all that wonderful stuff. It’s nowhere near as cheap as your average fast food chain, but the quality makes up for any expense unspared. And the fudge cake is the very definition of glorious. I don’t really know what else to day to convince you. If like me you want to live in a world of cat-eye sunglasses, full circle skirts, Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly everywhere you look, intricate hairdos, nipped in waists, kitten heels, the advertising execs of Madison Avenue, fries and relish and slaw, come here, I urge you. If not, why are you talking to me? Get thee out of my 1950s dreamland.

Rockafellas(once Eddie Rocket’s) is a fairly new American style Diner which sells good quality junk food! There is a dish to suit everybody as the menu varies a lot. Typically, they do a wide range of flavoured burgers(accompanied with fries) so whether you like it mild, char grilled or spicy, there’s every reason to tickle your taste buds. I love the milkshake there and I always order vanilla and though it sounds the usual, it’s much better than any other shake I have tried so I would definitely recommend this. A shake would cost £2.95(quite pricey) but something worth spoiling yourself on! The diner has many spaces and is ideal for people going alone or with friends. The interior design is a vibrant red that matches its soft, comfortable seats. This is certainly a well laid out and attractive restaurant which serves tasty food by the most welcoming of waitresses.
