While doing our driving tour and listening to the Beatles on shuffle, as if on perfect queue Penny Lane came on right as we arrived at Penny Lane! Any Beatles fan should come to Penny Lane as so many songs had ties to the street. I mean, it’s in their ears and in their eyes beneath the blue suburban skies. The poor Penny Lane sign is cemented into the ground because it was stolen so many times! Truth be told if it wasn’t cemented in, I would have been tempted to take it myself. My gripe was not knowing exactly where we should park and take our super tourist photos. Thankfully my friend was very patient as we made a few circles ’round and ’round looking for the sign that brings it all together. Over and done with — it’s a must do for The Beatles fan. They have quite a few places with Penny Lane in the shop name on the road including a wine bar that looked cute and —- a bank and barber shop! bam!

Very strange! Yea though I looked high and low, and asked many a local(drawing all manner of quizzical looks in the process), I have yet to discover, definitively, A) What, precisely is a «fish and finger pie,»(many theories abound), and B) Where might one FIND one(ie, a fish and finger pie)?

L18 Penny Lane is an actual street in Liverpool and the name of the area that surrounds its junction with Smithtown Road, the place where John, Paul and George grew up. These places are referred to in the lyrics of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band(1967), A-side! Quick see for the Beatles fan!

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes. Wet beneath the blue suburban skies I sit and meanwhile back… If you are a Beatles fan then you must visit Penny Lane. It has a whole song dedicated to the sights and sounds of Penny Lane and the characters that live and work there. The area is so popular with tourists that the street sign had to be painted on after it was stolen and replaced many times. Penny Lane is a lovely place with a friendly atmosphere. Everyone here seems to be laid back and welcoming to everyone.

Having lived opposite Penny Lane for a year it no longer surprises me when I see coach tours of people stopping off taking photos of the infamous sign. The Lane seems to go on forever when you walk down it, and it’s filled with old houses that have a touch of history. Adjacent are some playing fields that are utilised by various sports teams. Penny Lane Wine Bar is a lovely destination for a few beverages, and there are other bars, and restaurants situated nearby. So if you’re a Beatles fan, and don’t particularly fancy venturing to the centre of Liverpool, or just want to see a touch of Beatles history, then this is a great place to head.

Similarly with Lark Lane, Penny Lane is a nice alternative for a drink outside of the city centre in a fairly safe and student orientated environment! There are loads of little wine bars and eateries based along Penny Lane and it’s a decent place to go out for a meal and a few drinks with a partner or a group of friends! I would particularly recommend trying the nearby Tarvern bar and grill, they serve huge meals, their prices are great and the service has always been excellent whenever I’ve eaten there! It’s a great area to live in as it’s close to both Sefton and Mystery Park and it’s a really friendly area because of the huge student community that frequent Allerton Road, Smithdown Road and Penny Lane! It’s not going to take you back in time though, so, if you’re a huge Beatles fan. go visit the Beatles museaum instead!

The Beatles thought it was very strange how the banker here never wore a mac in the pouring rain, but if the whole area is bathed beneath blue suburban skies, doesn’t that mean it’s not raining anyway? Very strange. The song itself applied mostly to business surrounding Penny Lane’s junction with Smithdown, hoping references to banks, fire stations and barbers would evoke a feeling of gentle suburban mundanity. Nowadays, this area is a different kind of tedious, plagued as it is with estate agents and wine bars. The actual Penny Lane though, running straight as an arrow to the university dorms on Greenbank Road, is still infused with the tranquil spirit of the song and makes for a pleasant stroll… right up until you have to cross the road to avoid the tourists getting their picture taken with the sign.

I live just off Penny Lane so I’m there nearly every day and to be honest, I can’t see what the fuss is about. The Lane itself has almost nothing on. The highlight is the fantastic Penny Lane Wine Bar but other than that there is a newsagents and a dry cleaners and laundrette and that’s about it. It’s a great place to live as there is loads of stuff near by but the actual things mentioned in the Beatles songs aren’t on Penny Lane and the Sergeant Peppers has long since closed down. Liverpool really is a city obsessed with the Beatles!

Great place to go for any Beatles fan! Great for getting pictures(just to prove you’ve been there)! The road signs are now painted on, as the old ones were getting robbed to be used as souvenirs. Just one of the great places to visit to get an insight into the history of The Beatles while in Liverpool.

Living quite close to Penny Lane it is amazing at the huge popularity it has. Now has painted Penny Lane signs because the others were always getting taken as souvenirs.
