This branch of Home Bargain is a good large sized store with lots to offer. They have a massive range of items on offer such as toiletries, cosmetics, fancy dress, toys, cleaning products, baby items, washing powder, medicines, furniture, pet food, bathroom items, picture frames, vases, bed linen, throws, cushions, kitchenware, food, snacks, confectionery, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks. The store is clean, tidy and well maintained. The staff work hard to ensure the shelves are kept well stocked and tidy. The store is often busy but the staff open new tills as needed and serve customers quickly. My favourite items here are the Hello Kitty fleece blankets and Live Colour hair dye for £3.99.

So you go into Home Bargain with two quid and you have a wealth of decisions to make as soon as you reach the first isle. The first of which may be, am I the richest person in this store, the second, will a novelty sumo suit be more appetising than £2 worth of saturated fat. Thirdly, why are all the extras from the League of Gentlemen congregating under one roof in Liverpool? Decisions aside, it’s a can of Pepsi Raw for 19p, five bags of Golden Walker crisps for 50p. Two Special K bars for 29p each and you’re a rich man! Aside from this you can get a tin of beans for 19p, Branston no less! Or maybe you want a bottle of Tuborg for just 49p. This really is a bargain basement! A must for students, doleys and bargain hunters alike!

I don’t know whether calling these shops ‘Home and Bargain’ is localised dialect, an anachronism or just plain wrongness on my part but I’m going to continue doing it forever so get stuffed. Anyway, how the Buddha does Home and Bargain function as an actual profit-churning business? Everything here is so cheap you end up scraping the price tags with your nail to see if some joker has tippexed over the pound signs. Nowhere else in the city can you buy a full range of fatty snacks and still get change from a quid. These aren’t fake brands either. No ‘Snikkers’ or ‘Cwavurs’ or ‘Ghalaxy Bars’ here. No my friend, it’s all the real deal. Now fill your pockets and scarper before they realise they’ve priced everything wrong. The only things that bring more joy than the low prices are of course the conveyor belts leading to the till. Each one is about the length of a 15 cm ruler snapped in half. The woman on the till can touch the far end of it with her elbow. Nevertheless, you will still place your box of detergent on the belt and together you will both watch it trundle the few inches into her open hand. It’s one of life’s small pleasures.

I think Home Bargains is, in general, a great shop. It sells such a good range of things at a low price. For example, I found a bottle of Gallo Syrah rose for only £2.99– what a bargain! The Home Bargains on Allerton Road is a bit disappointing though. It just doesn’t have the range of stock that they city centre one has. And things seem just a little bit more expensive in this one. Still great for homeware though
