I’ve been past Unit One countless times and always meant to nip in there at some point, and finally, after over 10 years, I’ve managed it! The most obvious thing about this place is the price of drinks. There are some really good offers in here, obviously tailored for their student-based customers(the Opal 1 flats are just across the road). You can get a pint for £2 or a bottle of wine for £6 — if you want cheap you can definitely find it here! However, it depends on what you’re looking for when going in here. If you’re just after a quiet drink and a chat, it’s not great. Despite being a little bar they play music at that level that’s just too loud to quietly chat but not loud enough to have a dance to. I went in for said quiet chat and spent the evening struggling to hear what was being said and asking for things to be repeated. On the other hand, if you want to watch some football it seems pretty good — there’s at least one good TV for it and some surprisingly well arranged seating for this(there was a match on when I went in, and although I didn’t watch it I did make a mental note of things). To be honest though, this is mainly a cheap bar to go to for drinks before moving into town. Whilst this is all fine and dandy, its location is just a touch too far away from town for me to bother travelling to for drinks before town, and the loud music puts me off going in for a quiet drink. Overall, I very much doubt I’ll be going to Unit One again, but if you live nearby it’s worth a visit.

I regularly used to cycle past this place as it was under construction. In recent years this little area has slowly been developed from an non-place in between Burley and the city centre into, well, a place of sorts. Unit One is a bar/grill that is in the ground floor unit of a block of flats so presumably this is where some bright spark took the name from. From the outside it simultaneously looks totally soul-less yet strangely alluring. The bright lights and well designed out door area gives it a cool, contemporary feel. The furniture looks almost like it was bought from the Ikea store of the bar world but the atmosphere was better than I had expected. Its a good place to go for a drink if you happen to live near by and it was probably developed with the complex of student accommodation in sight, as the client base. Its easier to go here than all the way into town but I wouldn’t go out of my way to have a drink here in the evening.

Unit One is a bar /grill not far from the centre of Leeds. It has adopted a very upbeat and lively atmosphere during peak times and is accustomed to the busy chatty lives of it’s customers. There are a good mix of faces, families are welcome during the day and in the evening a nice balance of students and professionals can be seen sipping on cocktails. Some of the drinks here are extremely cheap, examples are — £1 bottle of Fosters(if you drink imitation wee, sorry Fosters drinkersbut it’s true) £3 Staropramen(delicous Prague brewed lager yumyumyum) £2.50 Draught Becks The food is average quality at a very reasonable price and they give you absolutely tonnes of it. The menu’s best sellers include the usual grill suspects burgers and steaks. It is not all meaty mountains though, they also do salads, risotto, panini’s and vegetarian options such as the tomato and lentil dahl. They serve food from 11am — late daily. If you like whiling away afternoons in front of a football match, playing quizzes and cosily nattering to your mates then this could be the place for you.
