I can’t equate the reviews for this shop with my own experiences at Relic, which have consistently been the opposite of what others have written here, so my review is pretty negative. I’ve been collecting records for decades and have got used to the caricature record shop people you sometimes find running them. Staff who exchange smirks when you talk about certain bands or genres you like, and who seem almost deliberately unhelpful. London is full of these places — MVE in Notting Hill is, by some distance, the worst, but you find it to a lesser extent in the shops in Soho as well as Camden. I don’t get that at all — surely the point is to empathise and recommend rather than look down on customers tastes? Sadly Relic is another of these shops, and for no apparent reason as it’s hardly the epicentre for Yorkshire record collectors. I gave up going here about 2 years ago as I felt that I was encroaching on the staff’s time as soon as I entered the shop. Not that rude, just not that welcoming. Coupled with that is the fact that a great deal in here is massively over-priced and the selection isn’t very good either. I’ve gone above a one star review as I did once find a rare record I was after. That’s been my single purchase to date despite many hours of trawling through the racks. The bottom line is that Leeds is probably the worst big city I know to buy collectable music in — no idea why. Relic is about the only place. Jumbo and Crash are for new music rather than collectable, and that’s fine — for that they are great. Plus there’s none of the aloof approach…

I’ve been buying vinyl for a long time and seen loads of good Leeds record stores die(RIP Soul Alley). I make beats and dig for samples, tracks and drum breaks… and mostly just great old jazzy music. Seeing as Jumbo sucks these days and I’m not into much dance music, therefore do not really see much reason for stepping into Tribe, I live in Relics as far as record stores in Leeds go. It’s down to earth as Rowena states and it’s reasonably priced, compared to Jumbo. Got quite a few really good Polish Jazz records from here and a lot of funk and hip-hop. The stock really changes a lot and there’s a decent bargain bin as well. It really is the only record shop worth visiting in Leeds City Centre in my opinion.

This is another one of those shops that not many people know about which I like to go in from time to time just to see what they have and have to say the 1st time I went in a few years ago I could’nt have been happier with the service and still am to this day. I was just haveing a general nosey about wen i saw UB40 labour of love 12&3 for £8 and i thought id get it cause I’d been wanting it for a while but wen i took it to the counter the guy said he could’nt find it but instead of him just leaving it he told me to come back in about an hour, so I did and sure enough he found all 3 discs and I left very happy. They have a wide varity of music to choose from with a lot that are normally out of stock in the likes of HMV etc. The shop isent decorated all fancy but it dosent have to be you’re not looking at the floor or the bare walls its whats on the shelves you’ve gone to see and it is normally a good selection. The only down side is I have been told its not the best place to sell to but i also know its not the worst, cex springs to mind as a lot of the time they don’t give you anything for your DVD’s and don’t tell you. All in all I’d say its at least worth paying a visit weather you want vinyl’s, CD’s or DVD’s they will probably have something you’re after.

Relic Records is a grand old place, down to earth and bursting with vinyl. I happened to nip in here the other day and happily sifted through some of their collections. The store itself isn’t necessarily the most ‘chic’ place to be, it’s certainly an old enough building with some«rustic» décor, but that’s no indicator of what gems are held within. They’ve got a whole hoard of stock, in a number of classic genres, so certainly cater for most tastes. Whilst records may speak of a time gone by there’s no shortage of people interested in purchasing old Beatles albums and the like so it’s a good job that shops such as this carry on strong! I haven’t yet had a chance to go back and search out some of my favourite golden oldies, but since I now officially have a record player at home, I will definitely be travelling back here to have a good mooch. The staff are lovely here too and more than willing to offer up a bit of advice! All I can say is go and have a browse for yourself, with new stock turning up each week you never know what you may find!

‘ve always been baffled by independent music shops that stock a certain band’s CDs yet look at you as if you’ve just asked them for Britney’s back catalogue should you attempt to buy them. Happily, Relics Records suffers from no such crisis of coolness, and the cheery staff will happily direct you to anything you ask for, no matter how terrible they might think it is. They’ll even recommend other bands you might like. There’s a decent selection of vinyl, which is increasingly rare these days, and all the CDs are fairly priced, many similar to what you’d pay in the large chain stores. This shop is easily on a par with its better known contemporaries Crash and Jumbo, and due to its bright and airy feel and easy to navigate shelves some might even prefer it.
