I really really loved the food in Mumtaz. I didn’t have high expectations after reading reviews online but it was probably the best indian i’ve had. The dishes felt very authentic– they weren’t smothered in cream but were fresh and tasty. The mixed grill starter was delicious — and the vegetarian mains were great. The restaurant are really hospitable and as I normally avoid indian due to a nut allergy but this time they were helpful and ressauring that they don’t use nuts. I will definitely be having take outs from here.

Bizarre décor and insanely expensive drinks. But the sag paneer was amazing. Great for vegans. And let’s face it, if it’s packed like crazy on a Sunday night, it’s going to be amazing. I still can’t get over the décor — like something out of fin de sicele Liberace. And it’s tough to find — look for a restaurant called Chandelier — that’s it. Don’t ask.

The moment you walk in mumtaz it feels a footballers wife was given one million pounds to design it over the top curtain tassels bigger then a a baby rhino .Ice cubes in the toilets but over the top stuff aside its very wide open airy feel to the place and has a great window with views of the royal armouries and canal The food is great and one of the nicer currys iv had i had the Karahi Lamb meat was well done and flavourful i ask the waiter for very spicy how i like it. looking the menu a good plese for veggys with about half the of the dish are VEGETARIAN A stater main and side and drink its cost abit £15 so good value. they don’t serve alcohol but thats ok for me beer dont go well with curry ahhh

Gaudy and Garish with no Real Substance I wasn’t impressed by the OTT décor of the place, it smacks you in the face on entry, however the river side view was lovely. We didn’t have to wait long for a table and our waiter was helpful and efficient, my starter of Cod Masala was delicious, a large piece of spicy fish cooked to perfection. My main course of Paneer with spinach was a real let down, it’s one of my favourite choices in Asian restaurant’s but this was by far the worst I’ve ever had salty, overcooked, bland and the obviously tinned spinach was a strange grey colour that must have been first cooked days ago, my partners starter of spicy potato on Puri was terrible, potatoes are cheap yet there was barely a teaspoonful smeared on a very small piece of puri bread, very disappointing. Need to up their game food wise and stop relying on the kitschy furnishings for good reviews

I was invited to a wedding held at Mumtaz Leeds over the weekend. I was told by friends/relatives attending the wedding that the restaurant was designed beautifully. I have to agree in that it was, however, things were let down. Sofa’s around the reception area were not cleaned and cushions not placed properly or missing. Round glass vase on the table cracked. Yoghurt stains on sofa’s and chairs. Dust around shelves and dirty cutlery & plates! In terms of service, it was terrible! Not enough staff! There were approx 20 ppl per long table & only the front half of the tables were served! Ppl were having to shout for waiters, and often ignored. 2 ladies on my table had to physically get up and go to the kitchen area to ask for their starters to be served as they were forgotten, only the front part of their table was served! Also service was started at one end of the restaurant, leaving the back end ppl waiting a very long time! Waiters did not come back to refill food and drinks or ask if everything was ok. Staff seemed clueless. One female staff member with a bandage on her nose(who was inappropriately dressed considering there was a Muslim wedding being held!) kept swanning around as though she was on a catwalk flicking her hair and shouting at some of the waiters in front of wedding guests! To top it all off, the top man Mr Mumtaz himself was wondering around amongst the guests boasting about his restaurant and how much he had spent on it! All in all, staff are extremely unprofessional, from the main man himself down to the waiters. Service terrible. However, the food was tasty albeit a tad cold, but the service/attitude of staff left a sour taste! Mumtaz Leeds is not what it makes out to be and it certainly does not know how to organise/serve weddings. So if you are thinking about having a wedding there, think again & research very well because when you spend top money you expect top class service in every aspect! Wedding was spoilt by unnecessary things. Shame on you Mumtaz Leeds!

Excellent interiors and location has set very high expectations but to be bluntly honest in recent times I was never disappointed as I was yesterday after having dinner here. I am not at all happy with taste of food. I have ordered one prawn curry and one chicken curry with roti(don’t remember the names of these curries now). Ordered Rasmalai for dessert while I had ordered mix non-veg starter(for 2). This starter was reasonably better than rest of the entire order. I am not at all happy except for interiors and service I got from serving young staff.

I know this place is supposed to be a really big deal in Leeds, and the décor is very impressive, but in terms of food and service, our party was quite underwhelmed. When we first walked in, we were told to sit in the nice waiting area, by some used glasses and plates. They were still there when we left hours later. The giant laminated sticky menus should have been the first sign that the place could easily make a few changes to make the jump to a much better restaurant. After our first course, the waiter took our silverware and we had to ask twice for more(he didn’t realize that the ENTIRE party would like it replaced, not just one person). When we ordered a carafe the second time around, he genuinely asked if we hadn’t gotten it yet. He really could have just looked at our table to see that no drinks were on it. We also were one of three or four groups in the large venue, but they put us all right next to each other. I understand that there’s no need to spread everyone out, but it would have been nice not to feel as though we were all one big party. The food was okay but didn’t knock me off my feet, which I was expecting after hearing about it for months. I eat at Jaldi Jaldi all the time, and felt like I was pretty much getting the same thing. I honestly think that with some small changes(and better training for the waiters?) like cloth napkins, nicer menus, and not leaving the tab sitting on the table so we have to bring it to the front register like a highway diner, Mumtaz could really deliver a much classier dining experience.

A group of us dined here last night, for a Birthday Celebration. This place is really special and I was so impressed by the opulence of it all. We all took trips to the loos’s to admire the no expense spared fixtures and fittings and marvel at the marble! The service was pretty good and very friendly, the waiters are so well turned out and clearly interested in the diners without going over the top. Given that this Restaurant is run by a strictly Muslim Family, there is not alcohol which we were glad to respect, first curry we have ever had without a beer( The menu was pretty extensive and I was pleased to see the healthy eating section for those of us who need to downsize. The food arrived fairly quickly and was pretty good, although some of us found things a little spicier than usual and struggled somewhat. I was very surprised to be offered a korma that was either mild, medium or hot! Would say I have had better currries, but very nice non the less. The menu prices were a little more than average but final bill appeared pretty reasonable, although am so not used to getting charged for the pickle tray as well as the popadoms! oooh dear, painful for us misers! Maybe the bill looked ok due to non availability of alcohol. I would def recommend this place as the overall experience is quite special and I will be returning again soon.

Excellent food, friendly service, and a beautiful, open dining room have made this an instant favorite of ours. There’s a wide selection of vegetarian options, a kids menu with Indian choices, and a fantastic selection of desserts. HIGHLYRECOMMEND!

Me and my dad went yesterday after visiting the royal armouries museum(which is by the way a truly awesome museum, I love guns and in here it was full of them and it made no apologies other than a few boring«peace» and«gun crime» displays that they have to put in to please liberals). It was a nice sunny Saturday and I had never been to Leeds before. We are Mancunians and from what we saw of Leeds it really was a far cleaner, less busy environment than dirty Manchester that’s full of junkies, vomit, obnoxious students, and criminals from every place on the planet. Anyway, we like curry’s allot. I have eaten curry’s in almost every restaurant, Asian café, grill house etc in Manchester and a few in Bradford. In fact I have probably eaten more curries than many asians, so I know my stuff. I have always liked the mumtaz store bought curries which are certainly the best on the market, and actually better than most restaurants and take aways. And I knew about mumtaz as a chain and how the queen had visited etc. So I said to my dad«why dont we try it?, but I bet its expensive». We glanced at the menu outside and it wasn’t any more expensive than most other curry places so we walked in, unprepared for the extravagant décor in our jeans and t shirts. We were immediately asked if we had parked in the car park and then given a pre paid ticket which we didn’t expect a tall. We then were seated next to the window overlooking the canal, which by the way had an almost continental feel to it. The whole area was pretty clean and very quiet, it just didnt feel like a UK city at all. Our poppadoms came with a huge pickle tray, which was just fantastic. Very fresh and had two types of yoghurt, red onion with mint, olives, mango chutney, lime pickle, immly etc. Also the garlic poppadoms were delicious. I ordered Massala(fried and spiced) fish and my dad ordered the jeera chicken wings. I ordered murgh makhani and my dad ordered karahi lamb, 4 rotis and 1 pilau rice. We ordered a jug of water, but we received a bottle of mumtazs own brand filtered water which we weren’t to happy about. Jug means tap, the old«give them a bottle they will be too embarrassed to complain» is a naughty trick. One that makes me think twice about visiting again. The starters were fine, better than most restaurants on rusholme but not as flavoursome as say a kebabish style asian grill house. The mains then came which looked delicious and we realised we had over ordered on rotis as they were allot bigger than we expected. But they were delicious proper fresh home made rotis and not the usual pre made rotis that you often find. My murgh makhani was nice, but hotter than a medium that I had ordered. Which to my pallet was fine but I could see other people finding it to hot for medium. But my gripes with it were that it was not really a makhani in my book. Which should be very creamy, buttery and tomatoey. It was really very very very similar to the mumtaz store bought chicken tikka massala, albeit they added a few nuts and green chillie slices to it. I didnt try my dads, he seemed pleased with it but I don’t think it was anything mind blowing. The pilau was also very similar to the store bought mumtaz stuff. Perhaps they use the same stuff, or perhaps they use up old stock in the restaurant, or perhaps they just make it very similar to maintain brand identity. It was good quality food although not as amazing as I was hoping, reasonably priced, service was good, surroundings were good, pre paid ticket is a bonus. Although forcing bottled water on your customers is un called for and only serves to alienate customers for the sake of £3 or so. I think the whole no alcohol thing is abit of a gimmick, im sure they could serve it if they wanted to but they know that they can make more money from fruit drinks and lassi. And it draws in the trendy students and keeps muslim diners happy so they have wedding banquets there. So a good business plan really in their view. All in all its Good, but the food really needs to go the extra mile to match such lavish surroundings. And dont charge for bottled water when people want tap.

Been here twice and the foods ok, but the joint is stupidly overprices and overated. I mean when u ask for more mint sauce and the waiter scribbles it on your tab u know this experience is gonna blow ur ring… twice!

From the huge success of their flagship Bradford restaurant, this branch of Mumtaz had a sterling reputation to maintain. Located in Clarence Dock, the crisp and contemporary exterior only adds to its intrigue. On entering the building, my eyes were thrown into a state of utter confusion, they did not know what to examine first. Next to the entrance, an expansive shop fills the space, a separate enterprise to the restaurant but still under the Mumtaz brand. The shelves groan under the massive variety of cooking sauces, marinades, flavoured mayonnaise, infused oils, chutneys and — perhaps most surprisingly — baby food. There are a range of gift boxes and hampers that would make a unique and interesting present, which also reflect flavours of the region. Reasonably priced ready meals and a delicatessen complete this mecca of takeaway delights. The restaurant is decorated with a black and silver theme. Large black chandeliers and baroque style furniture made out of contemporary materials draw attention to the high quality finish of the space, it looks truly stunning. Although I do have a covert fondness for the picture found in more old fashioned Indian eateries with the nostalgic running waterfall! I have dined at this particular Mumtaz on numerous occasions and have never been disappointed with the taste, quality or freshness of the ingredients. With their cooking style hailing from the Kashmir region, their area of culinary expertise is exemplary through the masala fish and the Karachi gosht. Simply sublime. With a plethora of actors and Bollywood stars, politicians and sporting heroes declaring their passion for the food of Mumtaz, it is evident that their fan base is as diverse as it is huge. Even Queen Elizabeth II professes that the ‘food was beautiful and the atmosphere was delightful.’ Mumtaz totally deserves that regal accolade — hear hear, Liz.

The following is the actual letter I wrote to Mumtaz following a terrible night there. If you take nothing away more than remembering to ask for your parking ticket to be stamped, then there was a point to this review. The outcome of the complaint after much communication was a rather insulting £20 voucher off our next meal there, received over a month later. We duly returned the voucher… Haven spoken to the Manager, Rap, and the floor manager, I am, as suggested, writing to let you know about the series of events that upset our Valentines diner at your establishment last night. From start to finish, nothing seemed to go right, and by that I mean from booking on the phone to leaving the car park. I have no idea where you are trying to position the restaurant, but I was looking for a high class experience, and it was simply dreadful, worse than the service I would have expected in a greasy spoon café! Clearly it was valentine’s day and I had already booked to see the Opera at The Grand in Leeds. After seeing a news story about how Clarence Place was suffering, I decided to look up the restaurants as I am from London and do not know Leeds. The promise of a new restaurant that had spent millions on the décor seemed a great choice, however, this list of issues below perhaps shows why the area is in dire straits: On booking, I was told there was ONLY the choice of the set menu that night, yet I saw other people ordering alternative food On arrival, the staff that were milling around the entrance seemed uninterested that we had pre-booked, and for ease to us pre-paid After a short spell huddled on over-crowded sofas, We were shown to a table and left there for 15 minutes, then, a different waitress took pity on us and asked if we were being looked after, to which we replied no, and she went and at least got us at the valentines menu to look at. We were giving some fizzy grape juice, with no mention of any other drinks available, yet I saw other people with non alcoholic cocktails, we were not provided with any sort of drinks menu The food came, which was fine, not great, but fine. The desert came, which was not, two specific complaints, the milk pudding was served with a tiny tea spoon, we had to ask twice for an ‘adult size’ spoon, the ice cream was more like a milk shake it was so melted and the drips down the side and base made it look dirty. Is it too much to have them wiped before they are served? We did not eat the puddings. The table was cleared and we were left sitting there. We waited and tried to decide what to do, I had after all paid before we arrived. We sat with our coats on but no sign of our waiter. A different waitress came up and asked us what are we waiting for? I replied I don’t know, our table is clear can I have a bill or receipt or something? She said we should take the bill folder to the front desk, our waiter never mentioned this. Despite me telling several people we had paid, I was asked again for £49.95 I complained at the time, and the floor Manageress who asked us to take a seat. While we waited, an unannounced coffee we didn’t want arrived(which we didn’t drink), followed by the floor manager with a box of Indian sweets(which are not to our taste) by way of apology. I thought this was a joke, but as the evening was ruined enough could not muster the energy to make any more of a fuss, that is until I got to the car park… To top it all, we went to the car park to pay for parking(£4.50). I fellow guest who had seen us in the restaurant came up to me and said, oh, in future Mumtaz will validate your parking ticket for free! No mention at any time of this when in the restaurant, how would we know to ask? So not only did we have a truly terrible time, we paid 10% more than everyone else for the privilege! Finally, this meal was advertised as a ‘Valentines Dinner’. I am not sure what this was supposed to mean. There was absolutely no effort to make the place feel in any way ‘valentines’, one tiny red candle does not make a valentines dinner, no flowers, no mood lighting, just a regular over priced and under-performing night at Mumtaz. Really really bad.

PLease bear in mind, I have been with my husband 9 years and this is at themost only the third time I have not been able to eat the food! How beautiful and opulent the whole surroundings were, I last ate in an indian restaurant like this in India, albeit on a much smaller basis. We were lucky, we had rung ahead and therefore had priority book so no sooner had we arrived we were whisked away to our table(the nearest one to the loo), by a very pleasant young lady. Our lassis arrived and were gourgeous, then poppadoms with a pickle tray which looked a little tired! Once finished it was whisked away and efficiently replaced with our starters which were gorgeous, well cooked tasty and well presented. Once finshed the empty plates were whisked away and now too efficiently replaced with our main course, which I have to say was horrid! I had one one my favourites a chicken keema and quite frankly it was so salty that it was inedible, i am not sure if everything was salty or if it was this dish that immediately destroyed my taste buds, my husband initially did not notice, we left half of our dishes but this was not noticed. Were we unlucky? everyone I spoke to in the area said how fantastic it was meant to be — but in my opinion it was my worse dining experience in a long time and please don’t expect to make a night of it, table turnover seemed a priority! Sorry mumtaz

We came across Mumtaz whilst visiting the Royal Armouries(in Clarence Dock) and having a taste for Indian food decided to give it a go a few evenings later. The first thing you notice about Mumtaz is it’s décor — a lot of money has been spent here on making it look extravagent and authentic. You also notice the huge banner in the foyer that states that Mumtaz is an «alcohol free zone», which at first put me off(curry without beer?!) but this introduced me to the popular Lassi drink(mango, to be precise) which compliments spicy food ridiculously well. The food is excellent, and particuarly authentic. I’m not afraid of spicy cuisine but even the medium dishes are rather hot and leave your mouth begging for water. If there is one negative critism I can make it was the choice of music; sort of pop songs but with the vocals stripped out? I felt like I was listening to music from a 90’s computer game for a moment. All in all a very pleasent experience with great service and brilliant food. Mumtaz also do a takeaway service which we sometimes use when we can’t be bothered dressing up :)
