So I was parked up in Meanwood and looking for lunch(and looking for somewhere I hadn’t tried before). I very nearly didn’t go into Marcels because it looks rather grotty form outside but, being an intrepid(and hungry) chap I took the plunge. It’s not a big place but it has a deceptively large and varied menu seeming to cater well for veggies as well as us meat munchers. All the vacant tables were dirty but I stayed put and very shortly a very pleasant chap came from the ‘back room’ and took my order which he then dealt with along side several other jobs. Even though he was obviously busy he cleaned the table for me and my order arrived quickly. My cup of tea was grand and my cheese and ham toastie was acceptable as was the small side salad(little to heavy on oil but that’s just me) I was going to give two stars but The politeness and work rate of the single staff member pushed it up :)

This cute little café is situated in the heart of Meanwood, a stone’s throw away from the humungous retail park which houses KFC, Aldi and so on. This is a basic and homely sort of establishment, with a huge menu of offerings. It’s a bit of a «Ronseal» kind of menu — it does exactly what it says on the, er, menu. For example — one of the categories is «Meat Sandwiches», and they quite simply, are a range of meat sandwiches. I must admit at first glance you might be fooled into thinking they cater mainly for builder types, what with the meat sandwiches and take away teas and coffees for only 60p. But, if you look closer, you’ll also find a range of smoothies and deserts as well as the manly breakfast related grub. Whilst it’s true that Meanwood isn’t the most exciting place in Leeds to visit, if you do stop by it’s a fair enough thing to pop into Marcels Café. Cheap and reasonably cheerful!
