Greens Of Leeds

This shop is amazing for specialist smoking products and also has a tradional barbering products section for real gentlemen. I sadly no longer smoke and wish i did in a funny sort of way. They have sugar tipped cherry cigarettes that are long thin and daintily chic, specialist cigars and a fabulous range of Zippos, pouches and pipes (not that im promoting smoking) If you are really looking for something different/​special or a gift this is the place to visit. (This is not a crappy head shop for weed smokers) this is a shop for a true smoking connoisseur

I’ve been back several times since to this lovely tobacconist and, whilst I don’t have any rare or unique requirements, this has to be the best place in Leeds for those that smoke. Of course, I don’t wish to be seen as promoting smoking (far from it) but for those that do you can expect cheaper prices than any supermarket and far better service. Case in point; tobacco, filters and rizla usually come in at just shy of a fiver. Here I believe it was four pound and five.
The staff are wonderfully friendly and the range of products is huge. Pipes, zippos, trinkets and specialty items are all to be found within, and with such a variety of fruit tobaccos, the shop smells divine. A lovely shop with staff that define excellent customer service. Super!

It is exactly this kind of shop that gives a city an injection of personality, a distinguishing character to bravely persevere in the sea of chain shop uniformity that the high street has to offer.
Although I never smoke personally, I was drawn to investigating this shop through the passionate recommendation of a friend. He is particularly fond of the vanilla and chocolate tobaccos, after a disastrous experimentation with the cherry infused one.
My brother has got a significant birthday in April, that nobody is allowed to talk about, lest we want to face his wrath. Due to his love of both smoking and strong spirits, what better gift to buy him than a selection of rum and sambuca flavoured cigars from Havana! I’ll get him something else to accompany them, I am not quite that penurious. Maybe I should look into replacing his lucky blue pants, he’s relied on them too many times for them to remain hygienic.
I digress. There is a fascinating array of old fashioned pipes and shaving equipment for the discerning gentleman, I was inexplicably attracted to a beautifully crafted shaving brush, made with genuine badger hair. Bizarre!
If you are a keen smoker, or need a present for such an individual; Green’s of Leeds is a gloriously traditional shop, reminiscent of a bygone era. A wonderfully eccentric shop in the community.

If I were to liken Greens to anything, it would almost certainly be a cross between an old-​fashioned sweet shop and a museum. With different flavoured tobaccos, from black cherry to mint to vanilla, the lady behind the counter weighs out however much the customer asks for and hands it over in a little plastic pouch. The reaction from the recipient is not so different from the 8 year old being handed over a bag of strawberry bon bons! I like to think of it as comparible to a museum due to the fact that behind glass at the other end of the shop are displays of pipes, ranging from the small, to the comically large and ornate. On the other side, they seem to amusingly cater for the ‘her’ side of the ‘his n’ hers’ smoking tools (as it were) with cigarette holders and different types of cigarette cases behind glass on the other side, from the silver plated to the louder ones that seem to pose as items of memorabilia. To the rear of the shop in a room closed off that appears to be locked, they have a large extensive selection of cigars. Their positioning within the shop in their own room suggests that they have quite an array, no doubt ranging from the hamlet to the very pricey, larger valuable variety.
Going into Greens can be a treat, whether you smoke or not, just to have a look at the bizarre smoking paraphernalia that is readily available to those not phased by the smoking ban! The ladies behind the counter are friendly, and are very knowlegable when it comes to their stock of pipes, even if you’re just curious!

I’ve got to be honest and say I just don’t quite get it! Maybe that’s because I’m from the wrong generation to understand flavored rizla’s and liquorish tobacco. Everyone I know seems very happy with their Marlborough Lights and wouldn’t need such a shop. Plus I don’t think a pipe would be a very good look for me, not sure it would match my Chanel handbag. I can do vintage but a pipe could be one step too far!
Nevertheless Green’s always has those of an older generation looking into the window and on my wander in to the shop many happy wrinkly faces were browsing the pipes and very dated smoking accessories (mainly older gentlemen it has to be said).
It’s not for me, or probably anyone of my generation however we all have or know a grandpa with a pipe… so now we know where they get them from!
