It’s a fish and chip shop. That serves good portions. And not overly greasy food. With friendly staff. And it takes card payments. So not only do you not have to cook, you don’t have to go to the bank to take out the £10 note to pay for your fish and chips. Or battered Mars bar.

Well, although it was another life saving moment, the last visit wasn’t as top dollar as my previous visits.(Perhaps life saving is a bit of an exaggeration.) I nipped in here on Saturday, as I was in such a rush to get out and see everything that I hadn’t had time to eat before the evening’s proceedings. The plan was to get chips and a battered sausage, proper drink-sturdying stodge, and head onward into the night. In we went and I ordered a small sausage, large and chips. Yes, it was all for me. There was some confusion about that come payment time, the chap seemed to have trouble accepting that all the food was mine, and some embarrassment and amusement was caused. Basically, by the end of it the while chip shop knew what a fatty I was being.(I didn’t really mind, it was rather funny.) In any case, for about six quid, all that was for me to feast on –including curry sauce, of course, and that was ace. The sausages were amazing, perfectly cooked, and totally smothered in lovely batter. The only down side to the story is that the chips were not great. The chap had warned me that he’d need a few minutes to cook some up, but I think they needed a little longer than that. They were still a little hard, which was sad, but I’m sure this isn’t often the case. Either way, it didn’t prevent me from eating the majority of my fare, and all was indeed eaten. The staff are great, tons of fun for a bit of banter, and I know I’ll be back. Yey for fish and chips!

This place deserves four stars for its fishcake butty — ‘cake in a bun’, as it is known to true northerners. I was going to give it five, but then remembered that this delicacy is usually just a LITTLE light on the fish from this very fine establishment. However everything else about it is so excellent — the batter crisp, the potato delicious, fluffy, well-cooked, the teacake light and well-buttered — that four stars is certainly the absolute rock-bottom minimum. Or perhaps four and a half. Crown’s fish fillets are also excellent but the cake in a bun is in my view their piece de resistance. Their chips are well-flavoured from good potatoes, but, like most chip shop chips, rather limp and greasy. Some people appreciate this style, but I prefer an American style fry. Still, Crown’s are masters of the ancient art of fish-frying.
