I’m not sure if the owners were attempting to pull some clever marketing Jedi mind trick when they renamed this place and get people thinking they were visiting the north’s answer to China White. If so, they stopped trying after naming it … No, let’s be fair here … Chilli Whites is pretty decent in terms of décor and music. There’s a ground floor bar area — quite clean, modern and sophisticated in design and a further 2 floors upstairs with dance-floors, seating and bars. Chilli White scores a lot of «worth visiting» points from me purely for its location … at the top of Call Lane it’s in the perfect position following a night working your way down the drinks menu and up the road one bar at a time. As a side note I wouldn’t even bother trying to get in if you are part of a big group of guys. The bouncers never seem to have much love for anyone in the queue that’s part of a group with a ratio of at least 2 girls to every guy.

I remember this place when it was the Town House — which was much better! The character has been stripped from this building and everything pulled out and replaced with white furnishing that not only look a bit silly but are uncomfortable as well. The drinks prices are not cheap and there seems to be no atmosphere. I can imagine a lot of people enjoying it here, but it’s not really for me. It oozes a pretentious wannabe feel that it doesn’t manage to pull off. However I imagine it would be a decent place to hold functions, it has a corporate feel so may be suitable for work gatherings or meetings.

To call this a pretentious chav magnet seems a little unfair, but sometimes unfair things are true. As a group of girls going into Chilli White, you notice something immediately, boys, lots of boys, all in their freshly ironed shirts by momma, and by boys I mean not men. It really does seem to sit in contrast with itself, as the projection here is one of delusions of the grand and whilst you appreciate its best efforts, it falls shy of the intended result. When there isn’t a special DJ dude or dudette the music is pretty average, bog standard beats, and plenty of gyrating hips on the dancefloor. For many reasons I do not know, I am in the minority about my opinions of Chilli White as on Fridays and Saturdays this place is packed to the point you can taste people’s sweat as you inhale. Maybe because Chilli White offers student discount on both food and drinks. It has appeal somewhere. The cocktail menu is large, but at £6 a pop I doubt many will have the buck to try more than a few on offer, but if you get there between 5pm and 8pm classic cocktails are buy one get one free. Opening wise, it’s open Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and it’s open late, again now I’m beginning to see the appeal this has to most, with a closing time of around 4am. Wander around the rooms, dance a while, indulge in a few cocktails, and then leave. As for second innings, well that’s your decision to go back.

Chilli White used to be Townhouse, one of the city’s most straightforward and successful clubs that rarely disappointed in terms of a solid night out. For some reason, last year it was rebranded and refurbed into an over-the-top club with an over-the-top name, and the change really hasn’t worked. When it opened, it was clear that it was another club that Leeds could do without — you know, the sort that strives for ‘decadence’ but only really comes up with garishness that does not belong. Downstairs is probably the best bet — a stylish room that, while being extravagant, just about works as a venue for hip-hop and funk. The top floor isn’t all that however — extreme décor and average house music with a pretty smoky dance area. It all seems rather confused, and the cocktails look awful. I suggest that, if you find yourself here, you should stick to beer.

This used to be the Townhouse, and is spread over 3 floors. Impressive before you even get inside are the cobbled streets outside and the white wicker seating area outside. Inside the lower bar is all decked out in white with acres of white fabric, white tall tables and stools lots of glass and mirrors and even a tall white leather loveseat that we managed to snaffle. Bar prices were not as horrifying as I thought they might be and the bar staff were quick and efficient. It’s definitely a place for the beautiful people to see and be seen but is also a really nice place to stop for a drink if you are in the area. Think it’s open really late too — we didn’t go upstairs but it looks lovely on the website too!
