Armley Library

There’s not too much you can say about local libraries, if you want more up-​to-​date or detail information generally you have to order from the main library in the town centre.
The reason I have chosen this library to write about is because of the architecture. The stone carvings around the outside staircase are breathtakingly ornate and in good condition. They contain mythical gargoyle/​falcon type creatures breathing reams of material which link the archways.
There are some really ugly buildings in Armley but like this library there are also some beautiful ones, the prison is another example.

Perhaps due to its more suburban location Armley Library always feels more family orientated than its larger, more sophisticated counterparts in the city centre, and if you have young children I think it’s a much better bet. I visited here with my friend and her two children recently and we were both very impressed; the staff seemed genuinely committed to encouraging children to read and passionate about their jobs, and the choice for children from toddlers to young adults was impressive. The adult section is comprehensive enough, too, but I think the main attraction of this library is its family appeal.

Welfare Rights — Advice surgeries for people needing help and advice with welfare benefits and rights. Surgeries are held on Fridays from 10am — 12.30pm and alternate Wednesdays from 10am — 12.30pm. Surgeries are by appointment only so please telephone 0113 214 9006 or ask a member of staff at the centre to book you an appointment.
Credit Union — The Leeds City Credit Union is an organisation that provides straightforward, affordable financial services to a growing number of people in Leeds. Credit Union staff are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8.30am — 4.00pm. Wednesday 8.30am — 3pm.
Victim Support — you can book an appointment by telephoning 0113 395 1260 for support and advice if you have been the victim of a crime.

Armley Library is located right in the centre of Armley close to main row of shops. It is possible to park on the street outside but check the parking restrictions as some bays have a time limit. The library is located upstairs in the building but has a lift for disabled access. The library is a very good size with a very large childrens section which has smaller tables for younger children to sit at and computors which are kept for the older kids. This library is very child friendly. The toddler books are displayed at toddler level and they are able to rummage through the books for themselves. I recently got some free books for my 2 year old to take home from the bookstart scheme they run there. His pack came with a lovely carrying case so he felt grown up and it contain two brand new books as will as wax crayons, stickers colouring pads and leaflets for parents and carers. I was very impressed a very good freebie all you need to do is ask the staff about bookstart to obtain one. Also they have a rhythm time session for young kids too on a tuesday afternoon. I have attended it with my son a few time and its great fun they sing song and play with instruments. Also there is a kids play area which has been refurbished recently and now has a wonderful new kitchen area for the kids to play in along with other bit of toys to keep them amused. The adults section is located around the corner and is very large there is also a computor round at the end to as well a photocoping machine. The internet is free but should be booked in advance as it is popular. To get your libary card you’ll need to take some ID along with you but its totally free and you can borrow and return books to any library in Leeds which is handy. The staff are always very helpful and both myself and my son enjoy our visits, he just adores books.
