Oscar’s French Bistro

Endlich. Endlich mal haben wir in der englischen Provinz einen Laden gefunden, in dem meine Mitstudenten und ich kaum etwas zum Meckern hatten. Und das, trotzdem in unserer Runde außer einem Franzosen ein Mitglied aus fast jedem größeren Land Europas vertreten war.
Der Charme dieses Restaurants besteht darin, dass es nicht zu viel versucht. Das Restaurant ist eher klein, es ist einfach aber geschmackvoll eingerichtet und hat eine relativ kleine Karte. Die Gerichte darauf sind typischerweise französische Klassiker, die dem englischen Geschmack leicht, eigentlich fast unwesentlich angepasst sind. Also darf es ein bisschen mehr Fleisch sein, und dieses darf dann auch von den Inseln stammen.
Moules Marinier habe ich hier gegessen (schreibt man das in Frankreich nicht anders?), und sie waren sehr lecker, wenn auch mit etwas weniger Knoblauch als im Ursprungsland dieser Küche. Und dann wirklich gute Steak Frites. Dazu auch noch guter Wein. Na gut, in Frankreich hätte man das alles billiger haben können. Aber man kann halt nicht immer nach Frankreich reisen. Und wenn man schon einmal hier in Warwickshire ist, dann will man schließlich auch was essen. Und das macht man dann besser hier als an anderen Orten dieser sonst so wunderschönen Landschaft.
Hätten wir einen Franzosen dabei gehabt, hätte er das wahrscheinlich dennoch alles verrissen. Aber für alle anderen ist das als Tipp durchaus in Ordnung.

This really is an enticing little french bistro.
We have a friend who lives in Kenilworth and we’ve paid this lovely restaurant a couple of visits when we’ve been up to see her.
Oscar’s makes such a refreshing change to the number of chain restaurants you find on the high street in Leamington. It’s tucked away in a little side street and possibly very easy to miss if you don’t know it, but it’s well worth seeking out!
The staff are very welcoming and gave us a choice of either being seated down or upstairs. Both times we’ve visited Oscar’s we’ve sat downstairs and not been disappointed. There’s a really buzzy, community feel and the service is attentive, but not at all intrusive.
Oscar’s is painted in a deep red colour with atmospheric candle lighting, making for a warm and intimate feel for a quick luncheon or leisurely dinner here.
We’ve had both lunch and dinner here. Locally Oscar’s is well know for it’s excellent steak and chips. My partner had the streak and he thought it was indeed very good — cooked to his taste (medium rare) and succulent, but the chips probably let the dish down. The steak really needs to be served with chunky chips, but the ones which arrived were cut quite thinly and lacked that real satisfying taste you can get from well cooked (oil slick free) pomme frites! It’s probably just down to personal taste, but if you compete with good gastro pubs/​restaurants, you have to get everything right with a meal.
The french soup is delicious and a great winter warmer if you’re out shopping for the day.
We’ve tried a few of their desserts and they’re all homemade with a great attention to detail in their presentation — savour every mouthful. Their traditional Crème Brulee is to heavenly as is their Mousse au Chocolat. I honestly don’t think you could go wrong with any of their lovely puddings!
Reasonably priced and good quality food and wine, well served. I really can find little wrong with this great independent bistro. Highly recommend a visit!
