Every week it seems like a new coffee shop is opening up in Brighton and Hove, it’s hard to keep track of all the new arrivals and near on impossible to try them all. I’ve driven past Flourtown a few times since it opened, and finally got to try it for brunch this Sunday. It’s a very modern-looking café — clinical white surfaces and clean lines, however it still manages to maintain a welcoming, homely feel — maybe because of the freshly baked cakes lining the counter and the aroma of coffee and pastries in the air. The kitchen is open behind the counter and it’s good to see the guys rustling up delights in front of your eyes. There is quite a lot of seating inside and a few tables outside, but be warned — it can be fairly smokey out there, a bit unpleasant if you are nursing a small hangover and not partaking yourself! My pot of tea was served with a miniature milk bottle for the milk — a novel touch. My only complaint would be that the teapot was only half full and I had to ask for an extra pot of hot water. Come on guys, water is free — fill me up! My boyfriend enjoyed his coffee and cheese and spinach pastry, and my toasted sandwich was divine — artisan bread from infinity foods with good quality cheese, ham and tomato. We also tried a piece of their courgette and pistachio cake with lime icing, and although tasty was a little too sweet for us and we fed the remnant to a waiting seagull!

Flour Town is the new kid on the block. Just opened this week, they specialise in cakes and baked things as well as coffee. Rather mysteriously, they have toasters on the bench tables. Reason unknown thus far. But they do apparently bake all the wares and goodies in house The coffee was excellent and I expect this place will become a firm favourite with the yummy mummy crowd in due course. It’s the new venture from Matthew Drennan. It’s just on the north side of Palmeira Square.
