I’ve been here a few times for food and drinks and used to love their burgers. The beer selection is okay but the prices are a bit steep for local ales. Décor is fairly cosy– wood everywhere, nice decking outside. Service is summarized with a shrug. They run a 2−4−1 on burgers on a Tuesday. This used to be really good and we often made the trip especially for the big burger menu. Our most recent visit was disappointing– the promo is still on but the burger menu has now gone. There’s now only a basic choice of beef, chicken and veggie. At £10 we had the beef, adding cheese and bacon for £2. It came out quick but very dry, salty and well over cooked. Obviously they have other food but I haven’t tried anything else. Burgers aside, it’s quite a nice pub but I doubt I’ll be rushing back anytime soon.

We met in the Ancient Mariner on a Wednesday night for dinner and were impressed with the ambience of the pub. There’s a good amount of tables around but can imagine it can get busy on the weekend. My husband, friend and I all ordered the burgers and chips which were tasty. They had the pulled pork burgers and I had the simple American burger. Unfortunately they forgot my order and when they apologized and asked if I wanted onion rings with it, we said yes as it was thought that it’d be complimentary. However we were wrong and they charged £1 for 3 small onion rings. That left us a bit disappointed but hey ho, maybe I’ll try them again in the future.

Quite frankly this is my favourite pub. I might be biased because its local to me, but I really think its one of the best pubs I’ve ever been too. It’s a real locals pub as it’s tucked away in a residential area not far from Aldrington station. This makes it all the more friendly. It’s just so welcoming, friendly, good décor and great food. What’s not to like about it !? It has a great range of seating areas from tables of various sizes, to comfy sofas, cozy booths, and an outside seating area(both front and back). In here I have eaten the best roast dinner I have ever tasted. On Sunday I think they only serve roast dinners and you won’t be disappointed. I am also a fan of their bangers and mash range. A wide range of fancy flavoured sausages with a choice of mash types and gravy options. I am in heaven!!! Other friends have eaten the fish dishes here and burgers and everything is really good quality. The perfect place to hang out for a drink. Try out the quiz(on a Monday I think), listen to live music(Friday and Saturdays I believe). The music isn’t too loud so you can’t hear yourself speak, just a good atmosphere. If you’ve not been to this pub you have to go. Simple as that!

I visited on a quiet week night during the summer for a couple of drinks with my partner. There was a nice atmosphere, clean and comfortable environment. The bar staff were friendly. The prices are a little too high in my opinion, but still reasonably in-line with other pubs of the same style in the area. I would return.

Weekday food and Sunday roasts are really good. Sheltered outside space at the back and benches out the front.

I’ve always enjoyed the atmosphere here. It’s nicely decorated and has a relaxed feel, both inside and out. The little beer garden is great for summer and inside is warming for winter nights. The staff are friendly and the food is good. One of my favourite pubs in Hove.

Do you like sausages and mash? If you do you will love this place. It’s a pub with a sausage and mash menu. That’s right, not just one standard type of bangers n’ mash, but a whole selection of different types of sausage, different types of mash, different types of gravy, and optional extras(e.g. peas). They do other food too, but who’d want that? The other thing that is nice about this pub is that it is clearly a thriving local. It’s right in the middle of a residential area, but that gives it that indescribable quality of friendliness and business. It’s a bit too far from where I live for it to actually be my local of choice, but the sausage and mash menu is a quirk that means it is worth making a trip out for.

My very first visit to this pub was in the summer, the food and the atmosphere was brilliant. Our second visit was later in year, it was cold and wet outside, but once you enter this pub you totally forgot about rain, the food was good, service was second to none and the atmosphere didn’t let us down it was brilliant, the place was packed out. So please we did book a table in advance, this pub is tucked away with a lot of outside space very enjoyabe in the summer. lI would recommend this pup to anyone

Situated in central Hove the Ancient Mariner offers a traditional, relaxing and atmospheric pub, priding itself on it homemade menu. The food is locally sourced wherever possible and the mix and match bangers and mash menu is the best I’ve had in the city. It has a refreshingly friendly staff and clientele and is really cosy in the candle lite evenings. Like all good community pubs they support local artist by displaying their artwork, the pieces are on display for sale in the bar and regularly rotated. It has a heated beer garden which is great in summer and bearable in winter. The really amazing Sunday roasts are worth popping in for if ou find yourself at Poets Corner.

GENERALNOTES As our local for 6 months, the Mariner easily became my favourite pub in England. Absolutely everything on the menu is stellar, the staff is a good time and best of all, they play Ryan Adams all the time! MENURECOMMENDATIONS Where do I begin? 1. The Burger — I want you to brace yourself to accept the full weight of my forthcoming words… ready? This is the best burger I’ve ever had. Seasoned to orgasmic perfection, topped like a true gourmet burger should, with roasted red peppers, leafy greens and bunch of other decadent toppings I can’t recall now, this burger is something you must experience. 2. Bangers and Mash — Tons of varieties of sausages(try the chorizo) and almost as many kinds of mash(my pick is the 4 cheese or garlic) and finally about a half dozen gracy options(I’d go with the mushroom or red wine). Quality. My favourite British meal. 3. Seafood curry — I don’t think this is a part of the regular menu but it was ridiculous. Just an onslaught on flavour. 4. Veggie burger — it’s the kind that’s filled with actual veggies and it’s delicious. 5. Pan-fried peanut butter and banana sandwich — This definitely isn’t on the regular menu but it’s amazingly decadent. It’s a knife and fork sandwich that will get you making your own versions at home which is probably a really bad thing. SERVICENOTES I love the people here. The cooks are not only talented but friendly. Compliments get back to them and they’ll often come out and talk to you when it’s not busy. LOCATIONNOTES Hidden away like a good local should in Poet’s Corner. HUMOUROUSSTORY As Canadians living in England, we of course found many of the British phrases to be hilarious, if not nonsensical and took to mocking them. It was a glorious moment when we heard the bartender here use one of our favourite mock phrases one night as we overheard him tell someone that he wasn’t «taking the piss» but was in fact«extracting the urine». Hearing that was the tits.

Tucked away on a residential side street in Poet’s Corner, The Ancient Mariner is a great local. Menu comprises mainly of sausage and mash(you choose your type of sausage, type of starch and type of side). Music is uniformly good and atmosphere is always buzzing and friendly.

Easily my favourite pub in the UK! I simply cannot say enough good things about this pub. The food is fantastic. You must try the bangers and mash here, the selection is mind blowing and so is the taste. Whenever friends came to visit I would always take them here. The service is top notch and you are always greeted with a smile. The employees here also have the best taste in music of any pub I’ve ever been to. There are lots of comfortable places to sit and there is very nice art work on the wall that is for sale. It’s tucked away in Poet’s corner but it is well worth the visit.
