Perfectly situated in the market place, Mantles has been a firm favourites for fish and chips in our family for many years(check out my alliteration — my old english teacher would be proud). The restaurant is underneath the main shop, but it feels cosy rather than basement-y, with white walls and plush blue velvet curtains. We had some french people stay with us once, and they really wanted to try proper fish and chips, so we brought them here. They weren’t disappointed — who could be with light, crispy battered haddock and fluffy golden chips on offer, with proper mushy peas and gravy that tastes like it’s been made for a roast dinner? Ommmm.
