I walk past this pub on the way out of the station every day and I feel angry and upset every time I notice it. Over a year ago a bar lady here served myself and a friend at midday. We ordered drinks and light main meals. A second friend joined us 5 minutes later. The bar lady followed my friend to the table and asked us to leave immediately. On asking why, she advised that we were under age. On producing our driving licenses we confirmed we were all 23. She asked us to finish our drinks and leave nonetheless. My second friend is Indian. The bar lady made it quite apparent that she didn’t want him in the pub. We left our drinks where they stood and left in silence. It seems impossible that a member of staff displayed such overt racism, without batting an eyelid, in such a public setting. To this day I feel angry. The pub is decidedly average otherwise. I would recommend the Sergison a hundred time over instead. It’s lovely and has a variety of comfy seats and alcoves to hide in with a beer or tables for dining. And the fire at christmas time is more than worth the 15 minute drive from my house. In total if a train derailed and ploughed through Burrell it really wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

Unpleasant, nasty atmosphere. Exceptionally rude staff who prefer to serve locals only. Possibly the worst and most unwelcoming pub in Sussex. Don’t bother — I won’t.

I popped in the Burrell the other day with my girlfriend for a few pints to start the evening off. The pub has the décor, clientele and ambiance of a classic locals drinking establishment and I must admit I am partial to such environments from time to time. There was an acceptable range of drinks on tap, but they did tend to stray towards the largers, rather than my preferred ale. The pub has a pool table if you fancy wiling the hours away with a few games and there are two big screen televisions which feature sky sports. One was playing the weekend footie, whilst the other covered international rugby. This would be a great pub to go to with your mates for a sporting session. I’m not the biggest rugby or football fan, but whilst I was answering the call of nature in the men’s room, I saw that they were also showing the next David Haye fight live. I am a big boxing and MMA fan, so was pleased to see a pub showing the pugilistic arts. You don’t see so many watering holes that televise boxing these days *smile* Also, the close proximity to the station makes this a good port of call for a swift jar on the way home, or if you have long enough to wait for your train.

This place isn’t bad but its not the best pub in the town. I think as its so close to the train station, they get a large amount of transient customers. It used to have a bad reputation for fighting but have completely cleaned up their act now in that department. The food is decent pub grub and really reasonable price wise. If you’re train is delayed or you just arrived in the town and are gasping for a pint, look no further!
