With it’s white tiles and wooden tables and chairs The Upper Crust on Preston Road looks a lot like a ship’s kitchen filled with a random assortment of oddities, from pictures of kittens to brass beer pitchers and the kind of porcelain ornaments you expect to find in your grandma’s house. The food is traditional English café food at its best and it is extremely cheap. A cup of coffee is only 50p and sandwiches start from £1.50. It is also EXTREMELY good and I have now been converted to the genius of adding tomatoes, mayo and mustard to a simple sausage sandwich, an outstanding combination and a new favourite for me. There is also a patisserie inside although I confess to have not ever seeing much more than a few cream cakes on the shelves; perhaps a testament to it’s local popularity. For a more healthy option the café serves up freshly made smoothies and shakes which can be a welcome alternative to the coffee which is so strong and sweet it makes your teeth hurt, just like proper café coffee should.
