Betty’s always delivers a timeless slice of English tea room charm but without any of the stuffiness one might associate with the notion. Go early or prepare to queue, but do so nonetheless. I can’t in all honesty single out any specific menu item for praise, apart from maybe the Hot Chocolate which, in the words of my Belgian partner, «Makes her think of Brussels». And they know chocolate. I prefer the Harrogate branch, if only because it’s so consistently good in every respect.

We stopped in here for lunch the other Sunday. There was a queue for the Café at 2.30pm which was fairly slow moving but there were chairs to sit on. The queue for the Coffee Shop on the other hand moved briskly. The food was delicious if rather pricy. Between us we had Eggs Benedict, a Chicken and Bacon Omelette and a Bacon Muffin, two coffees and a Coke. The bill came to £34. However the quality of the ingredients, preparation and presentation went some way to justifying the cost. The service was friendly and faultless. The coffee is simply excellent.

Having had a stroll in the Harlow Carr gardens we decided to stop for lunch. As we only wanted a light lunch we chose to be seated in the café section. As usual there was a queue, i have never been to a Betty’s where there hasn’t been. Luckily the wait was only a few minutes and as it was in the Betty’s shop I was able to browse leaving the husband to queue. It was a really bright and warm place to sit on a cold March day and Scrupulously clean and stylish with marble topped tables. The soup and sandwiches we ordered tasted as amazing as they looked. In fact being on holiday from work we went on to eat lunch out at 2 other attractions cafes over the next days but nothing beat Betty’s In terms of presentation and taste although it was the most expensive at around £12 head including a hot drink and NO cakes on this occasion…
