I never tried fish and chips and for me it was just a fried piece of bad fish with some fat chips. This experience at Godfrey’s made me change my mind. We took only 2 large pieces of fish for 4,(one of cod and on of rock /each comes with fries) and the pieces were huge ! The breading was good, crispy but not dry and not to oily. The pieces of fish were really well cooked and tasty. The cod was like a regular white fish. Instead the rock was more meaty. The chips were homemade and good too. I really recommend to try the british way with some vinegar on it. I definitly enjoyed this typical birtish meal ! Plus, the waiters were really kind. We arrived late and they accepted to serve us anyway.

Hmm… Mixed result I’m afraid. It’s good, but I wouldn’t say it’s the best I’ve had. And given the hype this place received prior, my expectations received a small dent. The fish is quality enough but the batter and the oil are just not quite there in my opinion. There’s a distinctive flavour that’s created with the right batter oil mix. Sadly I think this place has got it wrong. It’s probably better than 90% of the other places out there but not as good as some other places I’ve had.

Hi, I went over to Godfreys, think of giving it a go as it had opened recently and having walked past it a number of times though it might be a nice place. Though the fish and chips were not bad I was quite disappointed with the service. There was no queue at the till when I went in and having stood at the till for a good 5 minutes(by which time I had a couple of people in the queue behind me) the lady who came to the till to take the orders completely blanked me out and went ahead to serve the gentleman behind me, and there I was standing right in front of her with a £10.00 bill in my hand waiting for her to ask me for my order!!! it was extremely annoying and along the lines of being insulting. The poor gentleman(served before us) who was not at fault then came over to apologize to us(my wife was with me and is also extremely disappointed with our experience at the shop) but the attendant did nothing more than a small ’ oh sorry I didn’t notice you’.and at 6 feet tall and 75 – 80 kilos I don’t think I am anywhere near being small enough when I am the first person standing at a shop tillAnd to top up our wonderful experience we were shortchanged, as a normal habit in Harpenden I never count my change(in my experience of living and working here since the last 7 years I’ve found businesses and people quite honest here), and when I reached home and removed the change from my pockets I had been shortchanged by 50p!!! So all in all the only saving grace was the food which was ok, but everything else was not up to the mark at all. I do not think I would be advising any of my friends to visit this shop and on the contrary would advise them to preferably stay away in order to avoid such a disappointment. This advice would extend to anyone else reading this review as well.

This serves the BEST fish and chips in Harpenden. infact the best fish and chips for miles around! I had the misfortune of visiting another fish and chip shop this evening and the quality of the food on offer was so poor I decided to try Godfreys. I’m so glad I did! The service is first class. I was met with a smile from very friendly staff. They recommended the cod and chips with minted peas. All I can say is mmmmm delicious. The batter on the fish is light and crispy and the chips are wonderfully yummy. Next time I will try one of their home made steak and kidney pies. they look mouthwatering and just as mother would bake.
