Young’s Interesting Books

How can anyone resist a name like Young’s Interesting Books? I’ve actually been here a few times now — it’s in the Skirving St strip of shops which I love, and Young’s is always worth a stop in.
It’s a second hand book shop, and as the title suggests, you’re going to find some interesting gems in here. The window display is always amazing and they tend to have something quirky/​unusual in there, or themed (recently they’ve had Star Wars stuff in the window).
It’s definitely worth taking time for a browse in here — if you were looking for something in particular you could ask for help, otherwise it’s nice just to chill out and have a browse. You never know what you’re going to find.

This is a great shop in the grand tradition of independent bookshops and should really be better known than it is. It’s run by passionate and knowledgeable owners, and this shows through in the quality and variety of their stock. Always worth a browse and prices are reasonable.

I was so happy when a bookshop opened in Shawlands and I’m a real fan of this place. As the name suggests, they stock a range of strange and interesting books but they do also have some more mainstream fiction. It’s all second hand so you take your chances, but I very rarely come out without having bought something.
They recently had a signed first edition of Nick Cave’s Death of Bunny Munro which I coveted but couldn’t afford, sadly. One of my friends bought a copy of Jane Eyre by «Currer Bell», which means it was published while Charlotte Bronte was still alive (because the Bronte books were only published under their real names after their deaths). They have a great range of early science fiction and I love the old annuals (I did toy with getting my dad the 1970 Playboy annual for his Xmas but my mum would’ve killed me).
Their window displays are always great and even if I don’t go in because I’m too scared I’ll buy something, I love to stand and look in the window whenever I go past, a bit like a child at a sweetie shop. They occasionally host local author events and they’re the base for the Glasgow Sherlock Holmes Society as well. Lovely friendly shop with really interesting books!

Young’s Interesting Books lives up to its title. It’s a small, quirky bookstore on Skirving Street in Shawlands, and one of the few places on the south side where you can find second hand books.
There is a bizarre assortment of books in here, from old Scottish ballad books to 60s American crime novels with risqué covers. Young’s stocks a collection that spans over centuries, and I get the impression the books on offer are subject to change whenever the owner manages to buy in something particularly unique.
I looked over a vast array of books as different as Robert Louis Stevenson and a Edwardian guide to «correct manners». Books of all shapes and sizes (there were novels the size of my palm), worth gandering even for the gilded covers and vintage cover art! A delight.

During my teenage years, a constant feed of Nintendo, Sky TV, and Lucozade combined to give me a frankly shocking attention span that’s resulted in me finding it very difficult to get into too many books and abandoning them after one chapter. It’s something I’d like to rectify, and Young’s is as good as any a place to start.
Small, cute, and a lot newer than it looks, it stocks a good range of dusty classics, modern fiction, reference and humour books. All very lovely, but my personal favourite was the 80s and 90s Beano annuals, which I could actually remember from primary school the first time round.

Young’s Interesting Books is something very different indeed, they have loads of rare books, new favourites and of course, old classics. I was particularly attracted to their «Gone With the Wind» books but was then flooded with memories of that film that lasts around 29 848 947 hours that my gran made me watch on repeat when I was little.
The shop has a nice atmosphere, it’s very organised so you don’t have to worry about scrambling through bundles of books as they are all treated with the respect they deserve. I also didn’t feel pressured into buying anything and was just left to browse at my leisure.
I noticed a rather old school book called «50 Best Party Games», it looked awesome and had some crackers in there including Blind Mans Bluff which is one of my personal favourites. It was £20 though and although it’s probably worth it due to the age and rarity of the book I just don’t host that many parties unfortunately nor do I have any space to display it in all it’s glory. It would look great on someones coffee table though.
This place truly is a little treasure trove of books and I highly recommend it!

Another fantastic independent Glaswegian book shop! I love the sign of this store because it just looks like a second hand bookshops sign should!
Young’s has a great selection of all sorts but specialises in quirky illustrated titles, pop-​up books and pretty editions of classic books. Also, as any Glaswegian book store worth its salt has, Young’s has a Scottish section.
As a relatively new bookstore they are keen to have a look at anything that you may be interested in selling. I love this store already but I think it will only get better as the stock builds and improves.
Since it is the only shop of its kind in the Shawlands area I think they will manage to gather together a great collection of interesting finds in a way that book shops in the West End can’t. I think this is simply because there are a few similar second hand book stores in such a concentrated area so all the really good stuff is spread between a few shops!

At last an independent book shop that isn’t in the west end. In fact at last an independent book shop. In fact, scratch that, following the recent death of Borders or as my friend and his Northern accent calls it ‘Boarders’ at last another book shop!
The name could be argued as a bit presumptuous. but it has of course a wide range of second hand books from curiosities to standards and is just the place book lovers love to while away an hour or so.
If you like to feel the book in your hand that has likely been all over the world, read a wee bit and judge not by it’s cover or the anonymous tips of online book sellers then this is definitely the place for you.
The prices are reasonable and they buy as well as sell.
