It’s nice to dress up sometimes, eh? Too often I find myself writing reviews of bars and cafes where I sit in jeans and complain that the staff are a tad touchy, or that the coffee tastes a «little burnt», as if I reeeally know what that means. Not The Buttery, however. Two Fat Ladies at The Buttery is the sort of place you only go if an elderly relative has insisted on paying the bill. It’s the sort of place where waiters wear shirts with kilts, and guests wear high heels with expensive perfume. I suspect the words«burnt coffee» have never been uttered at The Buttery. My family and I had managed to convince one such elderly relative(my father on this occasion, the occasion being his 60th birthday) to take us for dinner on a wintry Sunday evening. We even let him pay, the lucky sod. We were greeted at the door by a tall, handsome and kilted member of waiting staff, and were offered the option of a pre-dinner drink in the bar area before heading through to the dining room. Never known to turn down an apéritif, we lounged in the bar for nearly half an hour whilst being serenaded by Eartha Kitt and the sound of cocktail shakers, before being shown to a beautifully set round table right in the middle of the dining room, complete with silver statues of pheasants and mother-of-pearl butter knives. The staff are incredibly attentive without being pushy or overly-familiar, and we experienced great service from start to finish. In all honesty, if it wasn’t for the fact that my entire family were present, I could happily have described the evening as utterly relaxing. This, coming from someone who spends most meals panicking about anything and everything, is no faint praise. For my starter I had the poached pear with blue cheese and pomegranate, which although very tasty and refreshing, could have been improved by the addition of twice as much blue cheese. For my main I had the king prawn and crag linguine, which was possibly the richest, most buttery and delicious plate of pasta I’ve ever had. The linguine itself was a small mound of lightly coated fresh noodles with the slightest hint of crab meat, however it was the generous addition of six fat king prawns sitting on top which stole the show. Slightly smokey, each with a smack of umami and seat salt, these prawns were plump and sweet and made my heart happy. As I was struggling to decide between the tiramisu and chilli-chocolate pot, I half-jokingly suggested the dessert platter — a platter of every dessert on the menu. I think my father’s strict views on the quantity of puddings I eat must have softened with age, as that is exactly what we ordered. A large round dish covered in candied pineapple ice cream, delicate vanilla pod pannacotta, a wedge of rich tiramisu and a poached pear with a thick creamy sauce, among others, was demolished by the six of us in record time. I truly believe nothing can bring a group of people together more successfully than the phrase«dessert platter». This isn’t an experience you can have every day, unless you’d like to take out a small loan or sell a kidney, but it is an extravagance worth having. Dining in places like The Buttery reminds you that Glasgow has a wealth of great food and restaurants with great atmosphere, you just have to find an occasion to justify visiting them. After all, it’s nice to dress up sometimes.

Wonderful, friendly«old school» excellent service. Outstanding food in a beautiful old world setting. For me this has to be my favourite restaurant in Scotland. Try the Stornoway black pudding and the smoked haddock(where can I find North Sea smoked haddock in Canada.) I can’t wait to return. This restaurant demonstrates that you can be world class by staying with local soul warming food without having to be trendy.

We had booked reservations at the Buttery, but at the last minute, with a delayed flight from Ireland, had to push it back a couple of hours by way of a quick email from the airport. They were very accommodating. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Ian, in full kilt, and so graciously ready to bring us a cocktail, prior to seating. The atmosphere was exactly what I was hoping for — a true Scots setting, with a warm and ambient atmosphere, with attentive servers, and superbly prepared dishes. I had expected mediocre meals in Scotland, and instead, had, truly, one of the best meals ever! As a foodie, I am hard to please, but each course kept getting better. I would recommend the cullen skink soup and the lamb was to die for. Ian was lovely, and so accommodating, as we did not know how to navigate to our hotel. He was kind enough to print out instructions and go over them with us before we left. We were so taken by the restaurant, that we went back for lunch 10 days later, on our way back to the airport. Once again, we were greeted by Ian, and he remembered us, which was lovely. Another fabulous meal, this time in the adjoining restaurant, Shandonbelles, which was equally as fabulous. The personal attention, and the hospitality extended to my husband and I, was unbelievable. Now stateside, I have not stopped talking about the experience. Definetely a restaurant you want on your short list if you are ever traveling through Glasgow. Magnifique! And Ian, we hope to see you on our next trip:)

An impromptu dinner in the city coupled with a lack of available parking for our first choice restaurant lead us here. Utterly sumptuous surroundings coupled with innovative and expertly crafted plates, not to mention wonderful service mean it’s no surprise this place deserves 5 stars. Cannot wait to eat a steak here again!

Came in for lunch. I was worried I was a bit underdressed, its very posh and I was in jeans and a sweater, but the service was friendly and impeccable. I had a lovely meal, and while the food was excellent the atmosphere is even more special.

Amazing place! Long review, sorry! I was in Glasgow on my own for work, and decided I was going to go for a meal before the show. I booked that afternoon, and they managed to squeeze me in as I wanted to go early. Now, I love going for meals on my own, as people are normally extra nice, just incase you’re a critic– but these guys had impeccable service regardless! I was greeted at the door where they took my big bag and brollie. The décor was gorgeous, and Scottish themed without being in your face. They were fine with me ordering a starter from the a la carte, and a main from the post theatre without any fuss at all. My starter was venison with a strawberry and soft mustard seed dressing, which was one of the best things I have ever eaten, and my main was sea trout, with seasonal veggies, cheese and chive mash and beetroot purée. On top of that, when I was too full for a pudding, they brought me a plate of gorgeous petit fours too. I actually rang people up on the way back, just to tell them they needed to go when they were next up. Couldn’t recommend them more! Could happily have never eaten again as nothing would have been that good, and just curled up in a happy ball of good coma.

What a delicious meal. What fantastic waiting staff. Let’s set the scene, my father wanted to take us(that’s my mother, myself and a further person) out for dinner in celebration of upcoming graduation and having been here before, he chose the Two Fat Ladies at the Buttery. We took a taxi here and I was a little worried because the area around it is terribly inviting and does not do this restaurant justice. At all. When we walked in, I immediately realised I was quite underdressed(or at least I felt this way) but no comments were made and the lady waiting on us was fantastic. She engaged with our«party» perfectly. Wine suggestions were exceptional. My mother decided to have the prawns as her started and she very much enjoyed them. For our main courses, my mother and I chose the fish(I cannot remember what kind of fish it was — white, that’s for sure) and what a brilliant, brilliant choice that was. The two sauces(orange/red and green) it came with were beyond tasty — sometimes, I still dream of them even though I cannot for the life of me remember what they were. Just trust me on this one, it was a dream — or as we would say in Germany«Es war in Gedicht.» The atmosphere is incredibly comforting and after they found out that my graduation was on the following day, they brought out little treats and pralines and shortbread and tablet, and even though I was already full beyond imagination, I had to try some. Gosh, these too were divine. All I can say in summary, that if you have a special evening coming up, or you just want to treat somebody(or yourself, no judgement here!) to a fantastic meal and you don’t mind spending a little more than usual — although not insane prices, to be honest(it’s worth every single penny!), then this is definitely a place to come!

This place is amazing. From the second I Walked in the door I loved it. The décor is fab, the staff courteous, and the food sublime. My friend took us all to the private room,(I clearly have fabulous friends) it’s beside the kitchen. I liked this you could see the staff working. The hostess was great, always at hand, to pour wine, offer various breads, and serve our numerous delicious courses. The duck was the best iv ever had. :) I’d definitely recommend here and I’d love to go back.

My friend and i decided to come here after being recommended by the concierge at Menzies hotel. When we arrived the place was dead and we expeced to be seated in the large, almost empty dining area. However after a curt look up and down us, we were told there was only one table free and led down the dark little alley to the kitchen. Never in my life have i been sat at the kitchen door table, never. But here we were. We ordered the scallops and duck for starters and the pork and king prawns for mains. We also ordered two drinks. When the drinks arrived, they had given my friend diet coke insead of lemonade. They did comp the drinks for us but in a dead restaurant and for the prices you’d think they could get it right. The food was good except for the prawns with apple. Apple is not meant for seafood. My main issue was that we were clearly not very welcome. We were smartly dressed, clean and polite but it was evident we weren’t fancy enough. My money is just as good as anyone else’s whether i’m in a dress or trousers and i don’t appreciate the snobbery. If you want to eat better food at cheaper prices with nicer staff and less judgement, go to Gandolfi Fish. Seriously people, you have a restaurant in the middle of a rough housing estate. You might want to reconsider your high and mighty attitude.

Celebrating my grandparent’s 57th wedding anniversary this weekend, my extended family met for dinner at The Buttery. Considering they were accommodating a larger number, the service was impeccable and without fault. The staff were super attentive and did not let you sit for even a minute with a finished drink without refilling it for you. Also, the meals arrived at the same time, which for a large party is tricky. The menu is largely fish based, but there was no vegetarian option which I normally try to go for. However, I chose the king prawns with Apple and Ginger cream and sticky rice. It was delicious: the prawns were huge and fresh, and the sauce was light and sweet. There was also fresh bread — pesto, onion and rosemary and chocolate — which was delicious. Although the staff provided amazing service and thoughtfully decorated a plate of petit fours with a Happy Anniversary message, I still felt that the price was excessive and unjustifiable. Averaging £22−23 for a small main meal is quite ridiculous.

We went here for our 1st wedding anniversary and had a brilliant night. We got a bit dressed up and enjoyed some lovely fizz. Everything tasted amazing, we love good seafood. The venue is gorgeous with lots of original details enhanced by dark décor and lots of cute fripperies dotted around. It feels like a special place to eat with the crisp white tablecloths and smartly dressed staff in waistcoats. The cumin bread was AMAZING and we loved the nicely chilled prosecco. I had the shellfish risotto with scampi butter and lime cream cheese to start which was absolutely delicious(it had dill on top which was a sprig and not all chopped up — phew, I hate dill — so easily removed) and Nik had the stuffed ravioli with smoked mozzarella, sun-blush tomatoes and a white onion and black olive cream sauce. Yum! For mains I Sea Bream with Indian spiced mussel & savoy cabbage cream and Nik had Lemon sole meuniere. Mine had lovely subtle spice flavours and was beautifully cooked but Nik’s was my favourite — SO simple but very good! We ended our evening with a cocktail in the bar, the black forest martini was the perfect dessert substitute and Nik enjoyed a refreshing mint julep. I can’t wait to go back again after writing this! I’ve remembered how good it was! Original review here…

Finally managed to enter the Buttery after a couple of previously abortive attempts when I hadn’t bothered checking whether it was open or not. I really liked the look of it, the staff were all immaculately dressed in typical classy restaurant-styley and the interior was very old-school hardwood and brass, crammed with objet d’art and bric-à-brac, mostly it seemed, to do with fishing. We got shown to our table by a friendly maître d’ and sat down. First point, the table was wobbly, I like living on the edge so I wasn’t too concerned to find my chair was even more so. I was pretty confident it would stay the course so I didn’t complain. At these prices though get your furniture fixed! The menus came, and I have to say I was disappointed by the lunch menu, it just didn’t appeal to me so I perused the A La Carte. I chose Innes & Gunn, West Coast Scallops with Haggis and a pancetta cream sauce, and for the main Mignons(whenever I read that word I think of little blue & yellow aliens) of Scottish Beef, Red Onion and Sweet Potato Mash, with Walnut Jus and crumbled Blue Cheese. Sevice was attentive, quick and friendly. The scallops came, the haggis was MacSweens — as always lovely — and the cream sauce, although a bit mean in volume, was really nice, the scallops themselves were perfectly cooked, and perfectly devoured. I am now looking forward to the next course. The next course came, it resembled a sweet potato mash burger, with the bun halves being generous rounds of steak! My partner’s scallops turned up as well, she said they were really tasty and perfectly cooked. Now for another negative, I asked for medium-cooked steak, it wasn’t, it was rare by definition. Luckily I don’t mind medium-rare, rare or even blue steak so I kept calm and carried on, the meat was succulent and tender, the side vegetables went well with the dish and the jus. Something was nagging at me though, and for once it wasn’t her, it was just missing a little something. I’d almost finished when a women next door pointed it out, there was no crumbled cheese on hers, nor had there been on mine. I felt violated, well not really, but almost. And she sent hers back because it wasn’t cooked to her specification either. Kindred spirits! So, while the negative aspects were not enough for me to feel like complaining, at these prices this cannot merit 5 stars, in fact the furniture, undercooking my steak, and missing a component off the dish makes it a high three only.

Came here last night for a celebratory work dinner with my colleague Jo, for the Henri Bourgeois wine pairing night. It was the first time for both of us at the restaurant and had heard a lot about it, so we were quite excited. So first up we were told we were to wait in the lounge area for our canapes and first glass. We took a seat on a nice plaid couch and our first glasses were given to us: the IGP Vin de Pays du Val Sauvignon Blanc«Petit Bourgeois» 2012. It was light, citrusy and simple, warmed the throat delicately. This was served with some nice red onion and goats cheese, honey roast ham, and chicken canapes. All in all — an impressive start. Next we were told to come through to the dining area to take our seats. We were sat at a very generously sized table for 2, which I adore — nothing worse than not having enough space for your food, bread, wine and water! The décor to me felt like a classic, classy Scottish pub — not overly fancy and definitely not modern… the tartan carpet isn’t really for me, however I can admire the tradition. Next we were poured more of the same wine and offered bread(tomato, pumpkin or olive, all delish — but not warm :-() while everyone got settled, and we were then introduced to Alban De Gerin from Henri Bourgeois. The night had been put on to celebrate the partnership between the wine company and the restaurant, which I thought was lovely, and Alban was personable and incredibly knowledgeable about wine — how I would love to be able to keep all that knowledge in my head! The starter was flash fried scallops on cream cheese, roast garlic mash with a light scampi and lobster sauce(can you tell I am reading from the menu?!) which was divine — especially paired with the next wine, a Sancerre blanc«La Bourgoise» 2010. Sancerre is one of my favourite wines, and I thoroughly enjoyed that one — it had a deeper colour than other Sancerres, and tasted oakier to me than others I have tried, but it was lovely. The scallops were cooked perfectly, and the sauce they came with was stunning — light but full of flavour. A well thought out plate. Next was the pan fried venison, wood pigeon and partridge, cabbage and prune compote, pickled walnut game jus. OOFT what a plate, I felt like a hunter-gatherer just LOOKING at this! Some amazing meat and each perfectly cooked — I loved the wood pigeon which I hadn’t tried, the partidge was nice if a bit boring(but with the jus, it was lovely). It also came with some beautiful haggis, and I thoroughly enjoy it but was getting seriously full at this point — I wish I had asked for it in a doggy bag as I barely ate half! This was paired with a Sancerre Rouge«Les Baronnes» 2010 which was quite exciting and very new for me — a red Sancerre? But it was perfectly ruby red in colour, and perfectly complemented the meat. The dessert for me was the showstopper — Light caramon spiced mascarpone panna cotta with oven baked plums. This tasted like a beautiful bite of autumn and Christmas, it was so delicately and delightfully spiced. The panna cotta was as light as a panna cotta can be — and the vanilla beans on top was lovely. The plums were beautiful — but I think could have had an extra few minutes in the oven as some bits were still a bit hard. The dessert wine this came with was the Vendanges tardives«Vendanges de la Saint Luc» 2007 which for me was the least interesting of all the wines — but I was glad that it wasn’t as syrupy and sugary sweet as some dessert wine can be. Lastly we had a cheeseboard — French Alp Beaufort ewes milk cheese, honey roast pear and almond chutney. The chutney was delicious but the cheese was a little dull — give me something more mature any day. With the beautiful Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc«Clos Henri» 2011 though, this brought the cheese to life. This wine I think was my favourite — I love New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc anyway, but this wine was made ‘in the French way’, and there was definitely a complexity to it that I haven’t found in other NZ Sauvignons… delish! Lastly we had some lovely tea with petits fours, and somehow managed to roll up the bar to pay! for £50 a head, this was a bargain… the only downside was, it was on a Monday night! I would definitely return to The Buttery, however I hope to see a bit more of a flavour punch, as this was lacking on a couple of the dishes. Lovely night and ambiance though.

Just fair. Nice staff and décor but the food is only ok for anyone who has really dines well. Might agree its one of the better for Glasgow but if you’re a tourist from elsewhere, go to the McD’s in the city center a half mile away and save the cash for London or your favorite home town restaurant. I had Scottish filet of beef. Not overly tender or notably tasty. A tad gamey, in fact. Cooked well to correct done-ness(medium). Wife had scallops and said I make them better at home. I do. A bit under done and no real flavor. Sautéed vegetables(family style — shared) were quite good though! After 2 tries around Scotland I have yet to find amazingly fresh Scottish seafood. This is a seafaring nation, is it? No desserts. Not worth the calories or money. Overall, 100GBP for 2 of us.

Granny knows what is the best !

Remembering the BBC series, Two Fat Ladies, I put this restaurant on our itinerary for our one night in Glasgow. Great reviews and I loved their show, especially when they toured the restaurants of Ireland on a motorcycle. Priceless. Highly recommend all foodies should seek out the series. Might be on Netflix. Anyway, to the restaurant. A cab ride across town from our glorious little boutique hotel, Grasshopper. I was never more tired than that day/night. Earlier — 4AM earlier — we’d hiked to the top of Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, then trained over to Glasgow. We were exhausted and looked it. I kept asking the Man if I had a lazy eye. I give you this background because when we entered the Buttery, we were welcomed into a ridiculously cozy sitting room, our coats taken by the overly-kind Captain and within minutes two fine wines in our hands. He told us to take as long as we wanted because our table in the next room was ours for the night. Now this is living. Not being chased out for the next diners and lounging in a terribly charming parlor with a doting staff and soft lighting?!? Aw yeah. We took about 15 minutes before ordering and heading to the table. The dining area was just past a super ornate wooden bar(see pix). Our table location was ideal. Not in the center of the room and with banquette seating on one side. Very relaxing. I think we had 5 or 6 staff attending to our table. Gorgeous place settings. Very old world and authentically Scottish. Am pretty sure the rest of the patrons were locals. I had the flash fried west coast scallops, cauliflower purée, roast beetroot dressing for£10.95. Man had the shellfish and saffron risotto, scampi butter with lime cream cheese for £9.95. Um, yum. Delicate flavors and perfectly prepared shellfish. The kind of dishes you see on Anthony Bourdain when he commends chefs for letting the star ingredients speak for themselves. Very basic flavors but again, expertly prepared and appropriately portioned. By the way, the bread and butter was delish as well. Upon recommendation, I had the medallion of pork glazed with welsh rarebit, sweet potato purée and merlot jus for £19.50. Man had the special Dover Sole(can’t remember the price). Good golly. Isn’t it funny how having tremendously good food makes you savor it so slowly that sometimes you can’t finish it because you got full halfway in between? Or is that just me? The pork was fabulous. So tender and the welsh rarebit really set it off. Floating in a puddle of tasty au jus, the potato purée was a nice compliment to the pork. Man’s sole was very good. I’ve had better, but it was well above average. My side of chips — also delicious. What? Our wines ran about £8−10 per glass. Too full for desert, but not to worry. We were given a small plate of complimentary petit-fours which the Man gobbled up per my blessing. I can’t believe those little nuggets came with the meal. Treated wonderfully right down to the last wave goodbye. We walked back to the hotel and slept like the Gods. Amazing meal, service, and environment. If we ever go back to Glasgow, I’d like to try one of the Ladies’ other restaurants. Wonderful experience!

We were treated to dinner here by two friends, and if I had a gun to my head I’d find it pretty hard to fault the place. Two Fat Ladies has expanded(if you’ll pardon the pun) beyond the original Dumbarton Road premises and now includes the legendary Buttery on an unfashionable rump of Argyle Street. Tricky to find if you don’t already know where it is, TFLATB rewards the intrepid with a smart, fish-based menu that delivers what you know and love, cooked to perfection and in decent portions. The setting is elegant without being stuffy, the service is impossible to fault and the food… aah, just about the best eating experience I’ve had in this town.

Our friends from the US treated us to dinner at Two Fat Ladies last night as a «thank you» for us letting them stay in our tiny flat for the last week and-a-half. I had heard many good things about Two Fat Ladies, but I didn’t really know what to expect. In short; the whole experience was absolutely incredible! We had a range of lovely starters among us(scallops, a lentil soup, chicken and pancetta ravioli), but the mains stole the show; I had the scallops with a asparagus and a gorgeous risotto and my dining companions had monkfish, sole and duck with some equally fabulous-looking sides on each dish. For pudding, we had crème brûlée, a chocolate and cointreau tart, and tiramisu. When the coffee arrived, it was served with the cutest little plate of petit fours and proper«nice restaurant» rock sugar. I was very impressed with the whole dining experience. The atmosphere was also very well thought out; super cosy, but not cramped, with a real sitting room feel. And even though it’s a rather upscale restaurant, the cutlery isn’t all from one matched and perfectly polished set; my knife was from Sheffield, my fork was from Killin and my dessert was served with a souvenir spoon from Bruges(yes, I look at these things when I go out… yes, I know it’s somewhat mental). The evening was full of little touches like these that showed us Two Fat Ladies is a fabulous place to go for a special meal, but definitely not too stiff or up itself. The service was great, too; always accessible, but not intrusive. I will definitely be coming back here for my next big meal out… now, what could we think of to celebrate next weekend?

Showed up with the Mrs. last week when we were in Glasgow. The reviews on Unilocal definitely played a part in us picking the place, and hey, who can refuse a place called Two Fat Ladies? We showed up on a Saturday and it was quite full. Despite this, we were warmly greeted by the staff and quickly seated. The service was prompt, professional and friendly the entire night. We started out with a sesame coated lentil and potato cake which was divine. The inner part was tender and flavorful and the crust was crunchy, savory, and perfectly fried. It was a great way to get the palate going. As a main, we got the fillet of scotch beef with a bourguignon of button mushrooms, baby onions and smoked pancetta and the seared scallops, served with chorizo and pepper risotto, smoked cheese and basil sabayon. The mains were a bit of a mixed bag. My filet was tasty but a bit overdone for medium rare, and not the quality I’d expect in a top restaurant. The bourguignon was flavorful, however the pancetta felt like an afterthought more than an integral part of the dish. The scallops were great, though, the risotto tasted like it came out of a microwaveable sack. It just wasn’t very good quality. We split a dessert to wrap things up, an apricot and orange trifle with amaretti biscuits which was very good, and they also added in some little treats like fudge and biscuits. That was a great touch. I should also mention, the coffee was pretty good too. Overall, our check, with drinks and tip, came to about 75 pounds. In my opinion, a bit overpriced for what we were served. This is definitely an interesting place, and I’d love to give it another shot, but it was a bit of a letdown overall since we were expecting a meal worth 5 Unilocal stars.

Perhaps the best food I have eaten in our fine wee city! This place has it all; décor, service and of course the food. This was the venue of my very(oot of character) posh 21st birthday dinner with my family and the food and wine made it a memorable night. To start I had the seared scallops simply because I had never had them before and it was the one meal of the year I could be sure I would not be paying for! And I must say, they were the most delishious little flakes of joy I have ever tasted, and the red pepper salsa went with them perfectly. I enjoyed a lovely fillet of roast monkfish in a rich salmon and caper cream. Amazingly amazing! And it is worth noting the menu is constantly on the move, with seasonal dishes gracing its pages throughout the year. The whole thing was finished off with everyone tucking into everyone elses desert and they also brough a lovely selection of chocolates over for our after dinner drinks! Finished off nicely with a few tipples of our national drink! A great wee place and one of the few gems in Glasgow! Put it on the list and way up the top!
