I spent half the morning here last Tuesday getting highlights that didn’t even show up! The girl who gave me the cut and colour was pleasant, but the fact that I now have to tell people I had my hair highlighted in order for them to notice(after much craning and squinting) is hugely disappointing. I won’t be rushing back.

I first went to Tanz n Hanz because I bought a waxing ‘deal’. Having had a terrible experience at Designer waxing I was very apprehensive. I can honestly say that Loraine put me at ease and the pain was minimal. I have been going back and I wouldn’t if I thought the salon was dirty or I was unhappy with the customer service. I can’t comment on the other treatments.

This is a bit of a rant to make me feel better, but the short version is: –Aggressively rude and combative owner –Cramped, uncomfortable atmosphere –Consistently fail to meet scheduled appointment times(according to the owner herself) –Cheap, but not in a good value way, in a «buyer beware, in fact run away» kind of way. Here’s my story, since I can’t get my money back… Wanting to dye my hair back to its natural color before the baby is born, I jumped at the Wowcher to this place for a cut and color for £25. I could clean up the ‘do and not have to worry about color maintenance after baby arrives and dictates my waking life like an adorable Kim Jong Il. If the color was good, then I’d found a cheap ‘n cheerful spot for when I was ready to start back with the highlights. Things got off to a bad start when I called to make my appointment and the owner yelled at me because I needed an appointment in the evening or a Saturday. «These things are supposed to generate business during off-peak times! I’m only making £14 off of this! It’s not even worth my time!» Charming. Please note that nowhere on the voucher were there time restrictions so I, crazily, assumed I could make an appointment during a time convenient to me, not to the owner. Anyway, eventually I got a Thursday night appointment several weeks down the line. I show up on the day about ten minutes early and wait patiently for twenty minutes. Finally the same gruff owner greets me and says«Oh no! You’re pregnant!» I told her this over the phone, mind. But here we are. «Where’s your form from the doctor?!» This is not a thing, people. My midwife said it was fine to color my hair throughout the pregnancy, but I was playing it safe and just going for this once. «Fine, but you’re going to have to sign a waiver,» she said intimidatingly. I said that was fine, I just want to get my hair colored and move on with my life. She then tried to put on a friendly tone as she helped me into the cape-thingy you put on at a salon to protect your clothes and ushered me grandly the five steps from the cramped«seating area» to a chair. «OK then, the colorist will just be another twenty or thirty minutes.» That would put me 45 minutes over my appointment time and I was already hungry and had to pee. I told her I was unwilling to wait that long, that the appointment was already ten minutes late and asked if I could change the appointment. «Waiting that long in a salon is not unusual,» She whined. I said that has not been my experience. «But I’ve already paid this person to be here.» I said that was not my problem. At an impasse, I said ideally I would just like a refund. «That’s fine, but you need to go back to Wowcher and get the money from them.» She told me her name and said she would authorize the refund. But when I emailed, she refused, saying I had cancelled my appointment at the last minute and refused to sign the«waiver» for being pregnant. So I guess she«wins.» Good one, Lorraine Martin. You got £14 off a heavily pregnant woman for no service provided. Congrats! ***Edited to add — I did get a refund… from Wowcher. But that is them doing their job properly – Tanz ‘n Hanz is still a place to be avoided.
