On my way to Jamie Oliver’s for a quick pasta for Sunday brunch. By chance spotted Peckhams so popped in for soup and sandwich. I have always fancied the deli food so I had high expectations verdict: Not bad but perhaps I should have had the pasta at Jamie’s.

This was our second attempt to grab some cake and a glass of wine here — the first time we were told we couldn’t have cake because they had no plates — they had been too busy to wash up… anyhoo this time they had plates so it was all good. We asked what wine they had and the pouty sulky waiter banged on about how there was a better selection downstairs because this is more of a coffee shop don’t you know… for whatever reason we decided to stay, we chose to have a glass of Pinot Grigio each I had the oreo cheesecake and Soph had the belgian chocolate tart. The waiter came back over to advise he only had enough for one glass of pinot… bad bad stock management right there! especially when you have an off licence down the stairs, I went for the Sauvignon Blanc instead. When our desserts came they were lovely — we couldn’t fault them and the wine was tasty too and that’s why Peckham’s gets 2 stars rather than 1 — the customer service dragged it right down. A couple of people were sat in the booth behind us and i think the manager was sat with them, a member of staff came over and started banging on about not having a break etc it was really loud and not the right place for it. the whole place has a really unprofessional feel to it and although it looks nice its let down by the staff — I wont be in a hurry to go again tbh there are much better places i can for for wine and pudding

Popped in here to get some lunch today on my way back to work and had a great experience. They have a vast assortment of sandwiches, bagels, wraps, healthy ‘ready meals’, organic juices… I could be here all day. The healthy dinner-style meals were all buy one get one half price and they had a lunch deal on for £2.99. After much indecision, I settled for a lunch deal(have an absolute cheek after having cake for breakfast). Opted for a beautiful soft flour bagel with pastrami, mayo, fresh cucumber, salad leaves and juicy tomatoes… Perfect! Tyrrells crisps are part of the lunch deal too, as well as cans(diet coke etc). Great value. I was in here for quite a while gabbing away to the lovely chap who works downstairs, so nice when you get a chatty staff member like that. Will definitely be in here more often.

Not as good as the Aberdeen store in Union Square… Visited the Glassford Street Peckham’s on Tuesday lunchtime, the place was packed so just ordered a take-away lunch. My main gripe is the café and shop are located on separate floors(shop is in the basement, café on the ground floor) so if you want a sandwich/juice/crisps etc you buy them downstairs. Coffee/cake/panini you need to pay upstairs, which is a bit confusing and a pain, but that is all. The variety of food on offer is fairly limited compared to other Peckhams I’ve visited too, probably due to the size of the store? Not as many cakes available, a choice of 4⁄5 sandwiches and no wraps on offer. Peckham’s is more expensive than some cafes/delis, so I do expect more choice. For such a small café the three members of staff where run off their feet! I had to wait some time in a non existent queue to get my cake! Won’t go out my way(as I did) to visit again, any sandwich will do next time.

I have said some nasty things about some of the Peckhams locations in the past. Some almost verging on the level of Police Report. When I examined my frustration, it was always with the staff. The things they sell in these shops is lovely. I mean it is a place that would satisfy any foodies’ needs. Especially if they value excellent beers and ales. It just paying and leaving that pissed me off. Well, the folks at Peckhams have addressed the staff problem in a big way. The folks that work here now are bloody brilliant. I am have talked to several of them, but let me discuss one guy in particular. Ian is a really friendly fellow who happens to know a hell of a lot about booze. I have seen this guy deliver tasting talks at a couple Whisky events. Go to Peckhams and he is standing there and able to give you a lot of information about the spirits, wines and beers they are selling. This is a great service. They have really gone above and beyond by getting this guy behind the counter. He not knows about the stock, he can happily send you in the right direction when you tell him what you like. Who doesn’t love that? This level of service is a real selling point for me but Peckhams also has a beer range that is pretty amazing in Glasgow. Excellent stocks of Scottish, English and American beers, due to the relentless procurement skills of the lovely Jess. My problems with Peckhams have been solved. Great stuff, excellent staff and easy to get what you want. Boxes ticked. Get your ass in here.

So I’ve long been in the camp which criticised Peckham’s for being expensive just for the sake of being expensive. With all the supermarkets now trying their best to offer the customer a wider selection of specialist booze(read destroy independents once more), the gauntlet has been thrown down to these places to either innovate or GTFO! Well, for me, this Peckham’s will not be GTFO for a wee while just yet. I popped in the other day to see if i could pick up some Canadian beers for the Mrs and her Canada Day celebrations. Whilst the selection of beaver brewed brews was limited to Moosehead lager and pale ale, it was still available and was at that surrounded by a growing selection of more and more obscure, interesting micro brewed beauties. Fine, the beer was pricey, but to be honest, it’s getting to the stage where I’m totally at ease spending a couple of quid on a kick ass beer instead of having my ass kicked by a cheaper one. If i’m in the MC looking for beer. I come here. Nuffage said.

Nice food, decent coffee, and a decent selection of beers & wines. A little pricey and pastry-fueled, but not a bad place to pop in for an offie, if what youe looking for is Brew Dog, Innis & Gunn, etc.

I didn’t eat in the café/deli part, but I have to give 5 stars to the excellent customer service from the people in the shop. My boyfriend and I just stopped in on a whim while out walking around the city, and since they carried all kinds of specialty and imported foods, we asked if they happened to carry canned pumpkin(hey, it’s what I’m used to. I have no desire to roast and purée a whole pumpkin). Other Americans or former Americans will be happy to know that, though they didn’t have it at the time, they took our phone number with the promise that they’d call when they got some in. Not only did they actually call, but when it came in, it was a lot less expensive than I’d expected. £1.50 is more than you’d pay in an American store, but that’s a lot better than what it would cost to have someone ship it or order it from Amazon.

Haven’t been here since before Christmas, but seemingly they dont have a license to sell alcohol after 10pm anymore which eliminates any inclination for me to go here. The selection of beers, wines and spirits does however extend well beyond the realm of any supermarket I can think of. Rumour had it Jack Nicholson was spotted here recently. Plausible, if he does own as I was led to believe, a home in Scotland. Not just so plausible when I later heard he them jumped on the 44 bus. It doesn’t even go past Peckhams.

Not the most noteworthy place in the Merchant city — you could pretty much blink and miss this place — Peckhams is still a lovely little shop/café. To grab a bite to eat here is not as expensive as you may think — as Catriona said, £7 for a high tea is an excellent deal. There’s also loads of other great little bits and bobs to try out. Yes it can be busy, especially Saturday afternoons, but if you want something that little bit different I’d wait it out. Sadly, due to new licensing laws, Peckhams cant sell alcohol past 10 anymore, which may deter a lot of folk from the shop(especially aftter the usual 10pm crowd). Sad times.

Even for being a shadow of its former self(or perhaps its former self in Byres Road, I’d not actually been to this location), Peckhams still does a decent line of deli goods – as good as the other delis I’ve been to in 2010 Glasgow. Not stellar, but considering the economic situation, eh. And, as Nicola notes, they’re a superb off-license for the less common sorts of booze, including some US and Mexican beers I was pleased to see in-country.(Blue Moon! Dos Equis XX!) Also, the staff let me have a long few wanders about in search of US products without any hard stares. The clerk who assisted me was quite friendly and knowledgeable about the beer stock, too. I didn’t get there with time for proper noms, and it was too early for cocktails, though, so I’m afraid I can’t speak to the food, and being a commuter in from Southside, the license restrictions aren’t really a bother, though I can see where that could wear thin.
