Kris and I were interested in trying NY, so when his mum suggested having her birthday dinner there, we thought: «Result!» On arrival, NY appears luxurious but offers a relaxed atmosphere. We were quickly seated, drinks ordered and settled down to peruse the menu. As one would guess, NY focuses on American diner/Cajun/Mexican cuisine. Kris and I both went for calamari starters(Read my previous reviews for an idea of how much I love calamari!), I decided on a California burger(beef burger with cheese, red onion, rocket, honey mustard mayo and avocado) and Kris decided to try their Southern fried chicken. The calamari was a valiant effort; it was light, the squid was cooked to perfection and all the coating needed was a little more seasoning to make it perfect, a nice start to the meal. Kris’ Southern fried chicken was the star of the show for me; the coating had a lovely cajun kick to it and the meat was juicy and flavourful. If I visited NY again, this would be my dish of choice! My burger wasn’t quite what I had expected; I’ve only just now realised that my burger was missing the red onion which would probably have improved it. As it was, the patty itself was bland, the cheese was overpowered by the guacamole — if it had been just slices of avocado I think it would work better as a balance to the beef and the cheese, but maybe that’s just me. The fries were tasty at least. We all ordered desserts and coffee but we did wait a while — the staff were friendly and apologetic about it so I suspect something was amiss in the kitchen since others were waiting too. I tried the NY cheesecake with crushed oreos and chocolate sauce; the filling was lovely but the base was non-existent, weird! Overall our meal was… Nice. Parts of it were great but other parts not so much. My other issue was the price point of the dishes; I don’t mind paying £12.50 for a burger if it’s of a high quality but I think NY need to work on the quality of their burgers before they can justify those prices. I’d like to go again though and try some more of their menu!

Had a good time here with work chums, all ordered off the pre theatre, good value and tasty food, special mention to Andy our server, very accommodating especially with a Off menu order. All food arrived quickly and tasty. Great drinks option, good to see craft ale available in the form of Drygate Gladeye amongst others. Looking forward to a return visit.

So I’ll have to admit I was a little on the fence about eating here when we arrived and stood before the gigantic menu, but I’m pleased to say that I was more than pleasantly surprised! Myself and Tomas(my best friend and wise culinarily guru) headed into Glasgow on a quiet Tuesday evening in December with the intention of finding a great restaurant. Firstly we headed to merchant square in the heart of the merchant city, we browsed the menus but nothing stood out so we made a break for it and arrived yet again at princess square! Curious. We headed straight to the NY American grill on the top floor, had a quick look at the menu and were seated immediately — naturally having our pick of any seat in the resultant as we are both high rolling, esteemed food critics! We then ordered our usual two cokes and the next thing I heard the waitress say almost cost the place a star in this review…‘is Pepsi okay?’ Well I was stunned to say the least, I mean how can an «American» restaurant not serve coca-cold? I reluctantly said yes and then calmed down. Tomy is a Pepsi fan so this was a win win scenario for him. We then browsed the small Manu of many, many pages and soon after the waitress arrived. But hold on. This wasn’t the waitress that had shown us to our seat, oh no, this waitress will forever hold a special place in both out hearts! I later found out her name to be Beth, and she is up there with some of the best waitstaff I’ve ever had the pleasure of encountering. We then ordered our one stater to share, opting for the NY sharing patter(pictured). Then our mains — Tomy went for the pulled pork and guacamole tacos(pictured) and I was struggling at this point, so I turned to Beth for advice on the the menu and she was more than happy to offer her recommendations, so after careful consideration we both arrived at the full rack of baby back ribs, glazed in BBQ sauce(pictured). Beth was hot! And I do mean hot! She had killer eyes, gorgeous skin and the most caring and soothing voice I may have ever heard! She instilled happiness in both myself and Tomas. So anyway, the sharing platter arrived after not too long of a wait and at first glance all was in order, the platter consisted of roughly 6 bbq wings, cheese & onion Bön bons, battered calamari rings and crab cakes. Myself and Tomas fired into it and I have to say this is a good dish, the chicken wings were tender and cartilage free(which I love), the fish was fresh and flavoursome(calamari was slightly bland) but was expertly seasoned and the bons bons were on point. But my only problem with the dish is that it was served with 3 dipping sauces, a blue cheese dip, a ranch and a barbecue sauce — which was not acceptable! The flavour was okay but the consistency was way off, so much so that it had developed a skin aver the top of it! So after finishing out delicious starter Beth cleared the table and it was on to the main course. Again, after not waiting too long our tabled was graced with out dishes(pictured) Tomas’ tacos looked very appetising and I’m sure they tasted no different. As Tomy is an avid Dexter fan, he went for the direction method of removing all traces of red, green and yellow peppers from the pulled pork as well as the salad and I even heard him speak to his food at one point. ‘Trying to get in my pulled pork ya sneaky wee bastard?’ he said. The tacos had two dips with them, a salsa and a sour cream — the salsa was a bit watery. My main course was terrific! The rack of ribs was halved and smothered in bbq sauce, served with a side of skinny fries and a small bucket of coleslaw. I thoroughly enjoyed the ribs. The meat was tender, the sauce had just the right balance of bittersweetness and once again the meat was lacking a significant amount of cartilage — which you know I love! So after a rather pleasant couple of hours, Tomas and I felt it was time for the check as we had plans to head upstairs to this trendy little rooftop cocktail bar, October! So we signalled Beth who was keen to know what we thought of our food and also engaged in a bit of small talk and exchanged some pleasantries which goes a long way with yours truly, before getting down to the business of payment! Now there was a slight hiccup when it came to payment as we hit a little snag with the card machine and it refuses to accept both my cards, this is always slightly embarrassing as I would appear to any onlooker as a deadbeat scumbag who couldn’t even afford to pay for dinner! But Alas, no! We switched to a different card machine and payment was made — I have to say Beth handled the situation spiffingly, while Tomas sat back and told some great jokes at my expense. In conclusion, the NY American grill has earned itself a 4 star review. This is due to the excellent waitstaff and food. Having said that, this could have been a five star review if the final package wasn’t so expensive. Still an evening well spent at the NY American grill though!

Had a fantastic meal with attentive service. Great variety on both the food and drinks menus. Highly recommend the pulled pork nachos and the key lime pie which has to have been one of the best I’ve tasted. Would definitely go again.

Had a Memphis burger which was blue cheese and mushroom, the other half had full ribs and my 2 year old had fish goujons. The burger was superb, cooked to perfection, the ribs were also great and the fish seemed to go down well. One minor glitch in that the fries for the kids meal came salted but they swapped them very quickly. Cocktails are excellent too, try the Charlie Brown!

Great atmosphere. I got the fried chicken which was really good! It came with a salad that didn’t have any dressing which was weird. My boyfriend got the smokehouse chicken burger. The chicken was perfectly cooked and juicy, but the bacon was VERY undercooked and the bun kept falling apart. both meals came with cole slaw that was way too liquidy to eat, it was like swimming cabbage, but the flavor was good. Overall it was 3stars but my chicken alone could have been 5

Made the most of the 5pm offer for 2 courses for £11.95 Booked the table through 5pm, restaurant was pretty empty when we got there but got busier. We ordered the jerk chicken starter and the chicken wings to start, both were really tasty and a great size for a starter. We then both had fish tacos for main course, considering these are £10.95 on the normal menu these were definitely worthy the money. The fish was perfectly cooked and came with the right amount of avocado on top. We also ordered a portion of fries to share, which where skinny chips, and agin really tasty. The deserts were an additional £3 extra and the cheesecake was definitely worth a try. The service was great and the girl left us to chat after desert before asking if we needed the bill. For the choice on the pre-theatre I would definitely go back and try the others!

This place is up on the top floor of Prince’s Square. That means it’s far away from manic toddlers, which is a plus. They have a good cocktail selection, though the waitress didn’t seem to know the menu very well. Sure, it’s a new restaurant, but at least train your staff. The starters took forever to come out. We had the NY platter. It was mediocre. The cheese and onion bites and calamari were decent, but the crab cakes were overcooked and the chicken wings tasted like they came from a bag. She had a burger. It was unevenly-cooked and chewy. They also put tons of caramelised onions on it, which weren’t even supposed to be there according to the menu. Oh, and gherkins. Again, if you Brits like those, fine, but not on an American-inspired burger. Come on, now. I had the shrimp gumbo. My adoring fans(cough) will come to learn that one of my biggest culinary pet peeves is tails on shrimp. Sure, you can cut them off with a knife, but then you lose a good deal of meat. This one was the gravest offence, as I had to pick them out of the hot broth to remove the tails. There wasn’t even that much flavour, which is just silly for a Cajun-inspired dish. It was basically shrimp in tomato sauce with okra. Way too much okra, at that. Didn’t even bother with desserts. I didn’t want to chance it. This place really missed the mark when it comes to emulating American food. There are some things you just don’t mess with, whether you’re trying to be original or not. The New England clam chowder had corn in it, which I believe is a cardinal sin. The Philly cheese steak sandwich had cheese slices rather than cheese sauce. I won’t even start on the fish tacos, but a lack of cabbage is a red flag. Look, I’m all for an unique take on the classics, but they really missed the mark on execution here. If you’re looking for quality and(some) authenticity, go to Frankie and Bennys. You’ll spend less there, too.

NY American Grill felt more like a bar than a restaurant and I soon stopped even noticing that I was in a shopping centre. The staff were very attentive on their first proper day, their lumberjack shirt outfit would have looked out of place in virtually any other place in the city, without trees that is, but it looked alright in this context. I have to say I was a bit disappointed by the choice on tap, a cider, Tennents lager and Budweiser doesn’t exactly make me whoop and holler. I opted for a Bud, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly a lively pint, so ultimately I had to send two more down to get the party going! On sitting and reading the lunch menu I have to say I was quite looking forward to my food. I went for the Caribbean Jerk Chicken Skewers and the Hanger Steak(with a peppercorn sauce), and my partner went for the Chicken Wings and the NY Classic Burger(with cheese). The skewers turned up and were really tasty, I liked the lime mayo and the chicken was moist and well spiced. My one wee issue was that the wooden skewers had burned at the ends, and they broke off into bits when I tried to hold them, I’m wondering if they weren’t properly soaked before using, a minor issue though. The chicken wings were plentiful and very good too, well cooked and with a really sticky, spicy sauce. The sauce sort of crept up on you and hit you in the throat a couple of minutes later, quite impressive! Then came the mains, the steak was big and the sauce was lovely, it was a green peppercorn one and that also seems to me to be the best. I poured it over my chips too. The meat was tender, but it was not medium-rare as described, it was rare and that’s where the mark is finally lost. The same goes for her burger, it was definitely not cooked as described. All-in-all though a very decent meal for a very decent price in a very decent new American diner.
