I remember when this was Lamora — I used to live off their take-away pizzas and pastas, although I’d never actually eaten in the restaurant itself and I have no idea why. Anyway, because I knew the pizzas used to be so good I was worried that things might have changed in the kitchen when this place was renovated and rebranded. Fortunately I needn’t have been concerned. I ordered a ham and garlic mushroom pizza and my partner ordered a proscuitto pizza. Both were perfect. We argued for a bit over who had ordered the better pizza. We swapped a slice or two and argued some more. Neither of us really won but then I ordered the tiramisu which was also delicious so I like to think I scored a point there. Incidentally, £4 for a tiramisu strikes me as a really great price. Mora Bar and Kitchen does look really cool now too. It now has lovely vintage lighting and long tables for big groups or people who are brave enough to share with strangers(don’t worry if you’re not, there are smaller tables scattered around as well). It’s a warm, comfortable place and, although I’m not sure I’d go in just for a drink, it does now feel like you could if you wanted to.

I had an early evening date with pals in the West End last week and was delighted when Briony C made the suggestion we pop into Mora. I’ve had a right hankering for decent pizza for ages! I’ve been to Italy and have had the real deal so my pizza standards are high… Let me tell you, dear Unilocaler, Mora does not disappoint. The menu is short but savoury — I like a place which knows where it’s specialties lie and doesn’t feel the need to jump on whichever pulled pork burger bandwagon is rolling by — and somehow we managed to sample most of the pizza section ourselves by all ordering different things. My own selection was the spinach and egg pizza which was utterly scrumptious. For some reason even reading the description I didn’t expect to be presented with a big egg baked right on top of the pie, but what joy I took in slicing that bad boy up and dipping my crusts in the yolk! It was the right kind of base too — crunchy on the outside and a bit chewy and soft under all the toppings. Not so thin that everything fell right off but not so thick that you felt you were eating sponge. We accompanied our meal with garlic and rosemary foccacia bread which was a decent portion, plenty for us to have a good sized piece each, and soft drinks as we were all driving. We also had a wee portion of chips which were tasty and well seasoned, though were definitely not as special as the pizzas. The whole meal cost us about £16/17 per person which was for a pizza and soft drink each and a share of the sides. I will also point out the pizzas are pretty large. I ate every scrap of mine though not everyone on my table did purely due to the size! Service was polite and quick, and although it was early Tuesday evening the place was more than half full which I took to be a good sign. Definitely one to watch for future. I’d happily give Mora 4.5 stars for this visit if only Unilocal let me do so. I’d like to sample a bit more of the menu before I splash out on that elusive fifth star though, which will just mean I’ll have to go back soon. Not a problem, I’ll look forward to it!

I’d never tried Lamora before it got a renovation + rebrand to Mora Bar & Kitchen but I’ve got to say, I really like the new place — the décor is slick without being too fancy and there’s some seriously nice lighting around the place. The menu is concise(a big tick in my book) and has a really nice selection — pizzas, pastas and mains. There’s about 5 in each section and prices are pretty standard — £10 for a pizza, £12 for a main pasta. I was really early for dinner with my friends so ordered a bruschetta to kill off my hanger — it arrived quickly and I won’t lie, I was a little surprised to just get one slice of bread for £4.50. It was absolutely delicious but for me, I think 2 slices would be more suitable for that price. I was glad I’d been able to scoff my bruschetta before my friends arrived so they’ll never know that I had a sneaky starter without them(except for when they read this review… hi gals!). We all ordered different pizzas for our mains along with some fries and focaccia to share. I got the ham and garlic mushroom pizza which was just lovely — I got it because I’ve not had that combination on a pizza before, and was very impressed. It ended up being a pretty cheap meal all up and I was really impressed with the food, so would definitely go back for another meal and to try more of the menu next time.

Although I know there are a growing number of great places in Finnieston, it remains a part of town I rarely venture to. After my recent visit to Mora Bar and Kitchen I’m glad Briony C suggested we try it out. The interior is a welcoming combination of dark wood, glass and warm lights and the staff provided a similarly positive reception. The menu was straightforward, about 6 pizzas, 4 or 5 pastas and a few mains from the grill along with a variety of sides and breads available. There were 5 of us there for dinner that night and we all decided to try the pizzas, some how managing to all order a different option. We also got some garlic and rosemary foccacia and fries to share. The foccacia came out first and was wonderfully crisp yet doughy with just the right amount of garlic, rosemary and salt. It was plentiful too with around 6 good sized pieces, if I hadn’t been looking forward to my pizza I could have eaten them all myself! The pizzas came out soon after and they all looked great. I’d opted for the spicy salame and it was super tasty. Just the way I like it, a thin base that’s both crispy and a little chewy, plenty of tomato, not too much mozzarella and quality toppings. It’s was a little bit sloppy in the middle, but then that’s often the case with good pizza. As well as good food, the bill was pretty reasonable, so a good experience all round. We were all driving so I can’t comment on the options available at the bar beyond saying there was the standard soft drink options available but I’d definitely be keen to head back soon for another pizza and a pint.
